Glenbrook South
put together its
best season in
seven years,
winning its first
regional title and
turning the tide
for the program.
Glenbrook South only
qualified one swimmer to
Saturday’s finals, but it
was a good meet for the
squad overall at the IHSA
State meet on Saturday,
Nov. 17, in Evanston.
Catherine Devine, a senior,
made the B-final of
the 50-yard freestyle, taking
12th place with a time
of 24.31 seconds.
“This was amazing making
it back here for the second
year in a row,” Devine
said. “Knowing that everything
paid off, all the training,
all the hard work, for
this final moment really
felt satisfying.
“This year was incredible,
to go from barely
making it last year to making
it in the finals this year
is incredible.”
Devine, who isn’t sure
on whether she’s going to
swim in college yet, was
happy with how her season
and her potentially final
meet ended up.
“I’m satisfied if this was
my final meet, she said.
“I’m happy I got to finals,
my whole team was there
for me and it was a great
way to finish off if this was
my final race.”
For years, New Trier has
been able to mix upperclassmen
with underclassmen
en route to a successful
state team.
The 2018 version was
different, though. It was
predominantly made up
of freshmen, with five total
first-year high school
swimmers as members of
the state team. Those five,
combined with teammates
who have made the state
meet in previous years,
were the key part in leading
the Trevians to a thirdplace
finish at the state
meet.
“This is such a learning
experience for us,” New
Trier coach Mac Guy said.
“We have really high aspirations
and just figuring
out how to put together a
great time is something
that seems like they’re really
learning a lot here (at
this meet).”
One of those freshmen,
Kaelyn Gridley, made
quite the debut at her first
state meet. Gridley, the
latest in a line of standout
swimmers at the school,
won the 100-yard breaststroke
with a finals time
of 1:02.68, down from her
prelims mark of 1:03.35.
The time was nearly two
seconds lower than her
“I was afraid before but
when I got in the water that
all went away,” Gridley
said. “It was really intimidating
because I feel like
I didn’t think this would
happen, especially freshman
year. Everyone in that
heat was so fast and it was
dead even almost and it
was a surprise. It felt pretty
great.
“In the water I was like
‘I want it’ and I think that’s
what got me there.”
Even though she was
competing in her first state
meet, Guy wasn’t shocked.
“She was the first seed
going into the meet so we
knew we had a shot but
Neuqua Valley has been
swimming so well lately,”
Guy said. “After she took
third in the heats yesterday,
we identified a couple
adjustments.”
