THE SCHOOL’S RECORDS
Kellie’s school celebrated its half-centenary this year. She joined with a group of her
classmates to gather all the photographs and newspaper articles they could get from
former students to put together a record of life at the school over the last 50 years. It
was interesting to see how much life had changed over the years.
When they had all of the materials arranged on the pages of the school’s collection
of its records, Kellie pencilled the page numbers of each page to help later with
drawing up the table of contents.
1. After she had finished, Kellie told the others that she had written 687 digits. How many
times had she written each of the digits 0–9?
2. How many pages had she numbered?
3. What page had she numbered when she was halfway through her task?
4. How many digits had she written at this point?
