Welcome
Introduction
Welcome to our Winter Guide which is brimming with events from December to February
to warm your Christmas cockles and kick start your New Year. We have a spotlight on 2019
in this edition (pages 38 & 39) featuring as many highlights from around Cornwall for the
coming year as we could squeeze into two pages!
The Mousehole Cat graces our front cover. This magical production, which features live
action and puppetry, is based on the popular children’s classic by Antonia Barber. Returning
to the historical Solomon Browne Memorial Hall in Mousehole for the third year, The
Mousehole Cat is now an established tradition in the village’s annual Christmas illuminations.
Early booking is recommended.
We are always keen to learn more about our readers. On page 35 you will find our 2018/19
Readership survey which is designed to give us a snapshot of who our readers are, how they
use the guide and what we can do to improve it. If you can spare 5 minutes to complete it,
we will enter you in a draw to win two tickets to any show or event featured in our guide or
website (t’s and c’s apply).
Thank you to all our partners and advertisers for their support throughout 2018.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at Cornwall 365.
hole cat
A magical puppet and
live action production
of Antonia Barber’s
classic children’s story,
The Mousehole Cat, is
performed in the heart of
Mousehole alongside the
villages annual Christmas
illuminations in the
Solomon Browne Memorial
Hall; the villages former
pilchard works.
Families will again
have time to marvel at
Mousehole’s spectacular
lights display before taking
their seats to hear how
this West Cornwall village
was saved from desperate
famine by the brave actions
of fisherman, Tom Bawcock,
and his faithful cat, Mowzer.
Based on a well-known
Cornish legend Antonia
Barber’s uniquely heart
warming story of the
friendship between a
fearless fisherman and his
devoted cat is sure to warm
the cockles of your heart
almost as much as an ‘efty
portion of stargazy pie!
Mousehole before the
production tours to the
USA and UK next year. The
last two years have both
sold-out so early booking is
advised.
This magical show lasts
for approximately one
hour allowing families to
soak up the atmosphere
of Cornwall’s most famous
LRS arts
Becca Lansford & Alix Hart
Rose Weber
Betty Davies
Founded in 2014 by
enthusiastic arts promoters
from The Port Eliot Festival,
St.Germans, LRS Arts has
gone from strength to
strength in their quest to
make sure that talented
young performers from
Devon and Cornwall get an
equal opportunity to show
off and advance their skills
and ideas.
The aim is to bridge the gap
between ‘participant’ and
‘audience’ by creating
an individual and group
mentoring and development
programme for those
performers who
demonstrated strong artistic
or technical excellence but
lacked experience and vital
opportunities. This pilot
scheme was in conjunction
with Livewire Youth Music
Project (Livewire) of Saltash,
Real Ideas Org (RIO), and with
Devon and Cornwall Housing
- now Live West. A year
later Arts Council England
got involved and have also
generously supported this
project since then.
In a sparsely populated part
of the country, it can be
difficult for youngsters to get
started and find out how to
get training, mentoring and
advice from professional
performers in order to start
a career in the performing
arts. There can be lots of
openings but making contact,
talking to the right people
and understanding how to
advance in a world that can
so often be dominated by big
concerns based far away is
the reason that LRS Arts was
formed.
They give opportunities to
young performers, actors,
writers, singers and musicians
as well as stage staff, stage
managers and technical crew
to learn by working with
experienced and successful
teachers. This is most often
achieved at an actual event
with a hands-on approach
that can bring quick results.
They work with big festivals
and with Kernow in the City
- an annual night of Cornish
talent that takes place in
fashionable Shoreditch on
St.Piran’s Day each year.
LRS Arts has established
partnerships with Port
Eliot, Glastonbury and
Boardmasters Festivals
and Kernow in the City to
provide many hours of live
performance opportunities.
These partners luckily
agreed to provide the event
infrastructure, support and
marketing to run the LRS
Arts showcase events. These
high-profile opportunities
get participants performing
to national and international
audiences that would
otherwise be out of their
reach.
Apart from all the actual
performances, LRS Arts
also offer mentoring to
songwriters, singers, poets
or spoken word artists,
photographers and film
makers. They help people
with their voice technique,
stage presence, career
finances and many more
aspects of the business
including master classes with
successful musicians.
All this is funded by LiveWest
in partnership with LRS Arts
and Arts Council England
Next year LRS Arts will start
recruiting again from March
1st. and will be looking for
enthusiastic and talented
youngsters - over 16 - to join
our program which usually
extends to three years of
development.
Just register on the website
www.lrsarts.org
and we’ll be in touch.
Colwith Farm Distillery is Cornwall’s first ‘plough to bottle’ gin and
vodka distillery. The producers of Stafford’s Gin, Fowey River Gin and
Aval Dor Vodka will be marking their first anniversary in July 2019. Plans
are in the pipeline to produce a Colwith Farm rum and begin distilling
a Cornish whisky. Owner Steve Dustow is also planning to introduce
quarterly events throughout 2019. In the meantime visitors can sign up
for the new gin making masterclass, which includes learning about the
Colwith Farm history and ethos, a tour of the production area followed by
a tasting and hands-on distilling session in the bar, finishing with bottling
and labelling your own gin. Half day sessions cost £100 per person or £150
per couple.
Tate St Ives is launching two major exhibitions in 2019 in its vast
and inspirational new exhibition space:
Anna Boghiguian (from February 7th 2019 to May 6th 2019) is the first
major retrospective exhibition in the UK of the artist Anna Boghiguian
(born Cairo 1946). It brings together an extraordinary body of notebooks,
drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures as well as spectacular
large-scale installations and elements of Boghiguian’s own studio. Recent
installations including A Play to Play 2013, The Salt Traders 2015, and
Promenade dans l’inconscient (A Walk in the Unconscious) 2016, will be
featured in the show.
Otobong Nkanga Nigerian-born contemporary artist Otobong Nkanga
will install new and existing works at Tate St Ives as the culmination of
her upcoming residency at the gallery. Nkanga’s drawings, installations,
photographs and sculptures variously examine ideas around land and the
value connected to natural resources.
Newlyn Art Gallery The celebrated Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid is
featured at Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange is pleased to present
Colombian artist Abel Rodriguez, an elder of the Nonuya people.
During the summer, The Exchange hosts a major solo exhibition by
British artist Simon Faithfull who will revisit Reef, an event that sunk a
decommissioned fishing boat off the Dorset coast in 2014. Now, five years
later, he will return and use digital scanning to explore the sea life that
