Cushioned
Running Shoes:
Helpful Or
Harmful?
Keen runners are always eager to find new ways
to avoid running injuries. And many have chosen
expensive cushioned running shoes
believing that they offer more
protection against injuries than
traditional trainers. But a new study
has found that cushioned shoes
could, in fact, increase the risk of
injury and leg pain. In the study,
published in ‘The Orthopaedic
Journal of Sports Medicine’, the
researchers found that the design of
these popular shoes could be putting
more pressure on bones, muscles
and joints.
Longer Hours
On Social
Media, Higher
Risk Of
Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying may be linked to higher
use of social network sites by school
children aged 14-17 years, rather
than to simply having a social network
profile, says a study published in the
open access journal ‘BMC Public Health’.
The researchers attribute the higher
cyberbullying to a lack of digital literacy
and relevant legislation. The higher
daily use with no monitoring and digital
literacy background leads to teenagers
posting private information and meeting
strangers online.
Bad Childhood?
Your Kid Will Have
Problems Too!
A new study from the University of California
(UCLA) has found that severe childhood trauma
and stresses early in parents' lives are linked to
higher rates of behavioural health problems in
their own children. The children are at double
the risk of having attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder and were four times more likely to
have mental health problems. The hardships
include divorce or separation of parents, death
of or estrangement from a parent, emotional,
physical or sexual abuse, witnessing violence in
the home, exposure to
substance abuse in the
household or parental
mental illness. Also,
a mother's childhood
experiences had a
stronger adverse effect
on a child's behavioural
health than the father's
experiences.
Feed Babies
Solids For
Longer Sleep
A study by King's College London and
St George's University of London has
found that babies introduced to solid
foods early, slept longer, woke less
frequently at night and suffered fewer
serious sleep problems, than those
exclusively breastfed for around the first
six months of
life. The research
is published in
‘JAMA Pediatrics’.
Given that infant
sleep directly
affects parental
quality of life,
even a small
improvement can
have important
benefits.
