Cover Story
Working with Community Partners
At Lewis-Clark State College Workforce Training we take great pride in our work with community partners!
Our Paramedic and EMS programs are great examples of a partnership that serves a need for training in this
region
In 2010, Idaho State EMS began requiring Paramedics to have graduated from an accredited program of
study to obtain licensure. Prior to this time, training took place in our regional fire departments; however with
the additional burden of accreditation they were unable to continue. That is when we partnered with Lewiston
Fire and Moscow Volunteer Fire departments and developed our program. We boast an accredited program
through CoAEMSP that produces entry level Paramedics who pass the National Exam on the first try 99-
100% of the time!
Fire Chief Travis Myklebust says, “Workforce Training has taken the Paramedic program to a whole new level.
The Program allows members of the Fire Department to be enrolled in a Paramedic Program without having
to leave the area to receive the training.”
Thanks Lewiston and Moscow Volunteer Fire Departments, we value the opportunity to serve our region and
the partnerships that make it possible. Our hats off to you!
Structured on the Job
Training: Save Time - Increase
Productivity!
Employers know a well-trained
employee is beneficial for
productivity and quality. New
employees always need training
and the sooner a new employee is
up to speed with the job the better.
Current research shows the cost of
on the job training has increased.
The 2014 Training Industry Report
(derived from a survey of businesses)
indicated over $60 BILLION dollars
were spent on employee training;
6.1 billion for outside products
and services and 42.4 billion for inhouse
training staff payroll.
Structured on the job training
is developed and managed
through pro-active planning
and methodologies. Studies of
structured on the job training
programs show a notable reduction
in training time (which translates
to dollars saved). In one study for
a lens grinder, training time was
reduced from the estimated five
years to just six months!
WFT and Apprenticeship Related Training
Apprenticeships are a model of learning which combines on-the-job training with related instruction, most
commonly from a college level, technical school. Today, we see the apprenticeship model of learning
in many high-skilled career fields, such as manufacturing, health care, electrical, HVAC, plumbing,
and many more. In this model of learning, employees are paid by their employer to learn specific skills
while on the job, while engaging in related, academic instruction. In some cases, apprenticeships are
regulated by the state, and successful completion by the employee leads to a professional license.
Also, the employer may choose to register their training program with the United States Department of
Labor. This is a registered apprenticeship. Whether registered, or non-registered, the apprenticeship
model of learning has proven to be an effective method for training today’s highly skilled workforce.
Workforce Training is partnering with business and industry in developing and delivering the related
instruction component for apprenticeship training programs.
What is Lean On-The-Job Training?
Lean On-The-Job Training (OJT) is the preferred method for training a highly skilled workforce. OJT helps the
employer identify the specific steps involved in training an employee to do any job/task at a productive, and
repeatable level. Upon completion of learning a job/task using this method, the employee gains the ability to
do the job/task at a high level, and to verbalize and show their proficiency in that job/task, including describing
why the steps involved in doing the task/job are important. In a workforce that requires specific skills, it is
important that employees are performing their skills uniformly, so quality control and production/services are
maintained at their highest levels. Workforce Training now offers OJT for employers who want a structured,
documentable plan for training their skilled workforce.
Your work no longer has to be unfulfilling. LCSC Workforce Training
in the course work to already be employed in the trade to complete the
Idaho required on-the-job training hours needed to test for the journeyman
license. Registration for these apprenticeship programs is now open.
Robotics Technician
An increasing number of
companies are turning to robotics
as a means for increased
production. Robots have a range
of applications, from “pick and
place” for packaging, to welding,
or inspecting parts immediately
after a process. However, robots
are not foolproof. They require
effective preventive maintenance
to ensure they operate at full
capacity. If a robot malfunctions,
an experienced maintenance
professional must know how to
troubleshoot the exact cause. This
program provides an intensive
overview of skills necessary for
the robotics industry. This 12
