misc | ask the petxpert BY Bill Piechocki and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM Drugs and Conventional Medicine vs. Herbs and Nutrition, Which is best? Almost daily we get questions about using herbs and foods regarding their effects towards drugs that are already being administered to pets and even family members. Here’s a very simple example so you can understand the complexity of this question. Has your doctor ever told you not to eat a cheeseburger, salmon or tofu if you are on a specific medication? While they may share their beliefs based on the condition that they are treating, few conventional medicine practitioners have adequate basic food or nutritional knowledge. Modern conventional medicine is focused on treating the symptom of every health challenge basically with only the protocols that they are taught; surgery, chemical drugs and radiation. These protocols have negative toxic consequences that do not support the healing process. Drugs are not designed to address the underlying cause of the health challenge. The body is designed to heal itself through an ongoing process of breaking down old, damaged, deficient and diseased cells and building new cells with resources that the body has. The resources that are needed for the process of building and generating new healthier cells are found only in clean appropriate natural nutrition. The appropriate foods not only bring in the nutrients the body needs but it also naturally removes the waste including the dead cells and the toxins they contain. We know that herbs and botanicals are another food product and as such will perform the same function of transporting nutrients in and toxins and debris out. The function is identical to the macro parts of the diet except that the body only needs small amounts of the micronutrients. The physiology of the body is designed to target areas of trauma and inflammation using their adrenal and endocannabinoid systems and then flood those areas with nutrition, hormones, enzymes, specific blood and stem cells to facilitate the repair and replacement in the affected area for healing. Because herbs and botanicals are clean and in a natural form, the body knows exactly what to do, use it or lose it. Therefore, herbs in a fresh or powdered form have no known side effects. That can change however with some extracts, tinctures and supplements because of the processing and addition of chemical agents. Tablets and capsules for both supplements and drugs have dozens of added chemicals, additives and preservatives that can interact with one another. This is the reason why doctors and veterinarians warn of possible interactions. While they are convenient, the aforementioned elements, including sugars, are a reason we do not recommend this format. It is also important to realize that with each pill or capsule, you are increasing the toxic load of chemicals to the body with every dose. The good news is that because herbs and botanicals add nutrition and detoxification for the body to utilize in healing, the harmful side effects of medication will be eliminated. Hence, because the body is now in a healing state, you may be able to wean off the drugs and eliminate all the side effects. Nature was healing all creatures long before modern chemistry and while many of the mysteries of the exacting methods that are in play are not yet known, the results have been proven for millenniums. We can’t imagine why her owners would do that, but she’s in good hands now and ready for a helping paw. Luna is about 4 years old and most likely a Boxer mix. Hobbs is waiting to meet you! This boy was taken in as a stray in September. He’s a Lab mix, about 5 years old, neutered, 55 pounds, mannerly on his walks, knows some commands, and is a gentle, kissy boy.
