Effective communication and Interpersonal Relationship

Effective communication sounds like it should be instinctive. But too often, when we try to communicate with others something goes astray. We say one thing, the other person hears something else; and it gives rise to misunderstandings, frustration, and conflicts ensue. This can cause problems in our home, school, and work relationships.

<strong>Effective</strong> <strong>communication</strong> sounds like it should be instinctive. But too often, when we try<br />

to communicate with others something goes astray. We say one thing, the other person<br />

hears something else; <strong>and</strong> it gives rise to misunderst<strong>and</strong>ings, frustration, <strong>and</strong> conflicts<br />

ensue. This can cause problems in our home, school, <strong>and</strong> work relationships.<br />

To help our students be effective communicators we discuss <strong>and</strong> actively do various<br />

activities at Eklavya School, top school in Jal<strong>and</strong>har. But first let us underst<strong>and</strong> the skill<br />

behind <strong>communication</strong>.<br />

For many of us, communicating more clearly <strong>and</strong> effectively requires learning some<br />

important skills, whether we’re trying to improve <strong>communication</strong> with our kids, family, or<br />

coworkers. Learning these skills can deepen our connections to others. It also builds<br />

greater trust <strong>and</strong> respect, improves teamwork, problem solving, <strong>and</strong> overall social <strong>and</strong><br />

emotional health.<br />

Common barriers to effective <strong>communication</strong> include:<br />

Stress <strong>and</strong> out-of-control emotions<br />

Inconsistent body language<br />

Negative body language<br />

Recognizing when you’re becoming stressed<br />

Taking a moment to calm down


<strong>Interpersonal</strong> <strong>Relationship</strong>s<br />

<strong>Interpersonal</strong> <strong>Relationship</strong>s are a connection or association between two or more<br />

people. It may be for a short span or life long depending upon the relationship. One<br />

cannot live in isolation <strong>and</strong> everyone needs someone to “Share <strong>and</strong> Care”.<br />

<strong>Relationship</strong>s are a lot like plants, the more we care for them the healthier they become.<br />

<strong>Interpersonal</strong> relationships are essential for our wellbeing. We have personal needs that<br />

can be satisfied only through interacting with others. How fulfilling, productive,<br />

meaningful <strong>and</strong> satisfying our lives turnout to be, depends on the quality of relationships<br />

we form with other people.<br />

<strong>Relationship</strong>s with parents<br />

As a young child your parents are the leaders of the family. As a teenager or young<br />

adult, we want to be more independent <strong>and</strong> think <strong>and</strong> speak for ourselves. This can be<br />

very hard for parents to get used to. Parents can also continue to be protective of you,<br />

<strong>and</strong> want to influence what you do <strong>and</strong> how you do it. Ultimately this is because they<br />

want what is best for us, but this can feel overbearing. It may take a while to learn how<br />

to speak up about what we want without upsetting our parents. And if we are upset or<br />

irritable, we might be less tolerant of our parents <strong>and</strong> their wishes.<br />

Working it out<br />

If we can work out our differences with our parents, we can have a good relationship.<br />

Here are a few tips:<br />

Be respectful when discussing any areas of disagreement.<br />

Be willing to listen to your parent’s view.<br />

Stay calm.<br />

Stick to the issue <strong>and</strong> don’t get side tracked into other areas.<br />

Use a team approach to working out problems – work at it together, think about what<br />

you want in common, <strong>and</strong> work out together how you can get there.<br />

Use a problem solving model.<br />

Be non-blaming, don’t accuse.<br />

<strong>Relationship</strong>s with Friends<br />

<strong>Relationship</strong>s with friends <strong>and</strong> family always go through testing times <strong>and</strong> there will<br />

always be ups <strong>and</strong> downs. Sometimes they will let us down <strong>and</strong> sometimes we’ll let them<br />

down.


Quality time – If we haven’t had quality time with someone for a while then arrange to<br />

do so. There are some friendships where we might only catch up once a month, others a<br />

few times a week.<br />

Keep in touch – Call/text/email/write/meet more often. These days technology makes it<br />

so easy to keep in touch <strong>and</strong> yet we still find ourselves drifting apart. Technology can<br />

help you keep in touch but it can never replace being together in person.<br />

Listen more – The absolute number one way to improve a relationship is to listen more.<br />

And really listen. If we think people aren’t listening to us then chances are we aren’t<br />

listening to them either. If we want people to listen to us then listen to them first.
