Senior Research Fellows<br />

PROFESSOR NGAIRE WOODS, Dean of the Blavatnik School and Professor of Global<br />

Economic Governance, spoke at this year’s Commonwealth Business Forum on a panel<br />

that included President Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria. Professor Woods<br />

was appointed CBE for services to Higher Education and Public Policy in the New Year’s<br />

Honours list.<br />

Junior Research Fellows<br />

DR PAULA KOELEMEIJER, Junior Research Fellow in Earth Sciences, received the<br />

Royal Society <strong>Univ</strong>ersity Research Fellowship this year, which she will take up at UCL.<br />

Dr Koelemeijer was also awarded the Doornbos Memorial Prize by the Committee for<br />

the Study of the Earth’s Deep Interior (SEDI) at their biennial meeting in Edmonton,<br />

for her “outstanding work on the Earth’s deep interior” and she co-authored a paper on<br />

the seismic signal of elephants: how this aids their communication and can help us to<br />

monitor their behaviour remotely. The research was published in the May edition of the<br />

top-ranked journal Current Biology.<br />

Former Fellows<br />

DR STEPHEN BERNARD, a former British Academy Post-doctoral Research Fellow and<br />

Junior Research Fellow at <strong>Univ</strong>, won the Morton N Cohen Award for a Distinguished<br />

Edition of Letters for The Literary Correspondences of the Tonsons. Dr Bernard published<br />

Paper Cuts: A Memoir, in which he boldly tests the bounds of what a memoir can achieve.<br />

DR JASON LOTAY, Weir JRF in Pure Mathematics from 2005-7 and 2008-9 (with<br />

a year’s intermission in Berkeley) has just been appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship in<br />

Mathematics at Balliol with effect from January 2019. He is currently a Professor of<br />

Mathematics at UCL.<br />

PROFESSOR BERNARD SILVERMAN, a former Junior Research Fellow, was knighted<br />

for public service and services to statistics in the New Year’s Honours list. Professor<br />

Silverman is Emeritus Professor of Statistics at Oxford, former Master of St Peter’s<br />

College, and lately Chief Scientific Adviser to the Home Office.<br />

Honorary Fellows<br />

PROFESSOR KATHARINE ELLIS, FBA (1982, Music), and PROFESSOR HYUN SONG<br />

SHIN, former Tutorial Fellow in Economics, have accepted Honorary Fellowships from<br />

<strong>Univ</strong>ersity College.<br />

SANDY NAIRNE, CBE, FSA (1971, History), is assembling and hoping to publish (via<br />

Unbound.com) The Coincidence of Novembers: a selection of autobiographical writings<br />

by his late father, SIR PATRICK NAIRNE (1940, Classics and History). An Honorary<br />

Fellow of the College until his death in 2013, Sir Patrick Nairne joined the Civil Service<br />

after distinguished service in the Second World War and rose to be Permanent Secretary<br />

of the Department of Health and Social Security and a member of the Privy Council.<br />
