SIR VIDIADHAR SURAJPRASAD NAIPAUL (1950, English) died on 11 August <strong>2018</strong><br />

shortly before his 86th birthday. News of his death came as the <strong>Record</strong> was going to press,<br />

and we hope to include a fuller tribute in next year’s issue.<br />

Fellows and Visiting Fellows<br />

ADMIRAL SIR JAMES EBERLE died on 17 May<br />

<strong>2018</strong> aged 90. From January to December 1971<br />

he held a Defence Fellowship at <strong>Univ</strong>. This was<br />

a short-lived initiative to give members of the<br />

armed forces an opportunity to take time out<br />

to study and research. Having served in the<br />

Second World War, Eberle remained in the<br />

navy, rising to become Commander of HMS<br />

Intrepid in 1968-70. After his time in Oxford,<br />

Eberle become Commander-in-Chief Fleet in<br />

1979 and Commander-in-Chief Naval Home<br />

Command in 1981. He retired in 1983, and<br />

from 1984-90 served as Director of Chatham<br />

House. In 1990 he returned to the navy, to<br />

serve as Rear Admiral of the United Kingdom<br />

in 1990–94, and Vice Admiral of the United<br />

Kingdom, in 1994–7. He was also a Director<br />

of the Countryside Alliance from 2000-7, and<br />

Chairman and then President of the Association of Masters of Harriers and Beagles. He<br />

was knighted in 1979.<br />
