nity to take a advantage of
that,” Taylor, the president
of the Misericordia board,
said. “Me and Patrick
Weimer are both members
of the junior board and we
thought that using hockey
is a great way to benefit the
organization.
“Tonight definitely exceeded
my expectations.
Throughout the process
I was kind of nervous on
how things were going to
turn out. Everything went
really well, everyone was
great with donations, especially
at the game when
we passed around a can to
raise more money.”
An added perk to this
year’s event was that
Weimer and Taylor would
be handing over a check to
Misercordia resident Natalie
Sonnenschien, whose
family has been a part of
the New Trier hockey family
as multiple brothers
have been in the program.
“It’s great for everyone
involved and I think now
that we’ve pioneered fundraisers
like this, we can
hopefully start a start a
chain reaction for events
like this,” Taylor said.
The quadheader marked
the third time the two
teams faced each other
this season, including
last week in the finals of
Loyola’s Thanksgiving
tournament. New Trier
Green came into the game
with a perfect 30-0 record,
including two wins over
Loyola Gold.
That changed though as
the Ramblers got on the
board 39 seconds into the
contest on a goal by Eagan
Callahan. That was
all starting goalie Drew
Shearson would need as
he came up with 33 saves
en route to a 2-0 shutout
over the Trevians.
“Last week they got
on us pretty quick and a
couple guys got injured,
which deflated our offense,
but this game
we had fresh legs from
the get-go and we really
played a three-period
game of hockey,” Shearson
said.
Playing each other numerous
times, including
twice in a week was something
the Ramblers used to
their advantage. Shearson
would consistently come
up with a flurry of saves,
keeping the Trevians off
of the board.
“My defensemen did a
good job clearing out the
front of the net so I saw
pretty much every shot
and my forwards did a
good job breaking up the
puck, so we didn’t give
them any more chances
than we needed to,” he
said. “I couldn’t be more
proud of the boys.”
Loyola added an emptynet
goal in the final minute
when Eamon O’Brien
added a goal with less
than a minute to go.
As great as the night
was on the rink, though, it
was even greater off of it
as the two programs combined
to raise $18,425 as
of press time, well over
their $15,000 goal.
