The guest speaker will be Dr. Derrick Hassert, a professor of psychology at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, who counsels some families of the senior living community’s residents. He will address the group and answer questions about the onset, diagnosis and care of dementia and Alzheimer’s sufferers, as well as make suggestions for coping as a caregiver. The discussion is to be facilitated by Director of Resident Service Amie Swim and Life Enrichment Director Dana Mahler. Dancers to give back at local senior centers On Dec. 15, more than 20 dancers from Heart & Sole Dance will donate a day of their time to dance, perform and visit with residents at four local senior centers. The Holiday Elves Performance Team are to dance and visit with residents at each center for roughly one hour. They will dance a special holiday routine they have dedicated six weeks to learning, followed by social dancing to several other holiday songs, to entertain and delight the senior residents. The Heart & Sole Dance’s Holiday Elves team will be donating their time on Dec. 15 several locations, including Autumn Leaves in Orland Park, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Heart & Sole Dance is a ballroom, Latin and swing dance studio that serves the south suburbs. Culver’s of Orland Park holding holiday toy drive According to Feeding America, 1 in 8 Americans struggles with hunger, leaving millions of people, including families living right here in the southwest suburbs, to seek assistance from their local food pantries. And while food has become an unaffordable luxury to many throughout our community, so, too, are toys during the upcoming holidays. This season, Culver’s of Orland Park has earmarked children of the Orland Park Food Pantry’s clientele as recipients of its annual holiday toy drive. Throughout the Chicago area, more than 30 Culver’s restaurant locations will be hosting toy drives for local food pantries, hospitals and organizations that support children in need. To donate, visit Culver’s of Orland Park at 9130 W. 159th St. Hobby Lobby prepares to open Orland Park location Hobby Lobby Stores Inc., a privately held national retail chain of craft and home decor stores, is set to open a new store in Orland Park. Construction is underway on this 44,000 square-foot building formerly occupied by HH Gregg at 151st Street and LaGrange Road. Hobby Lobby has 36 locations in Illinois. The Orland Park store is projected to open in late January 2019. The location is to bring 35–50 jobs to the community, paying $15.70 per hour for full-time and $10.45 per hour for part-time associates. Hobby Lobby has more than 800 stores across the nation. Each store offers more than 70,000 crafting and home decor products, including floral, fabric, needle art, custom framing, baskets, home accents, wearable art, arts and crafts, jewelry making, scrapbooking, and paper crafting supplies. Nonprofit partners with Ballet 5:8 to build new space on Orland Park Operation Nehemiah, a Mokena-based nonprofit dedicated to partnering with other nonprofits for building and rebuilding work, launched a major multiweek project for Ballet 5:8 on Nov. 3. Operation Nehemiah volunteers are providing the labor to transform multiple warehouse units into office, dance studio and program space in Ballet 5:8’s new home, 11545 W. 183rd Place in Orland Park. Saturday work days are expected to continue through mid-December and additional volunteers are needed. Don’t want to send us a card until you know what you might get in return? That’s not exactly in the Christmas spirit, but we get it. The 2018 Holiday Card Contest is already underway, but this week we promised the announcement of prizes. And, as promised, you will find the full prize list for each category in the accompanying sidebar. As a recap, the contest asks you to send us your best homemade Christmas cards, the most boastful of year-end letters (snark the halls, if that’s your thing), children’s drawings to be left with cookies for Santa, photos of your co-workers in reindeer antlers and noses, crafty Kwanzaa greetings or Hanukkah Hallmarks — basically, whatever it is you send to your loved ones to make sure they get something in the mail around the holidays other than stale fruitcakes from distant relatives, magazine subscription renewal notices and Columbia House compact discs. Law enforcement will be working around the clock through the remainder of the year to be sure travelers are buckled up and driving sober. The Orland Park police will join their counterparts throughout the State of Illinois with increased patrols during the holiday season. Police will be watching for drivers and passengers traveling without seat belts or with an unbuckled child in the vehicle. Motorists are warned that driving after drinking or using drugs or other impairing substances will not be tolerated. Illinois motorists can expect to Orland Township’s 2018 Holiday Program now accepting donations Submitted by Orland Township The Orland Township Holiday Program has been assisting local families in need for more than 30 years. The Township is preparing for the 2018 holiday season, and donations for the program are now being accepted. The majority of the Holiday Program recipients are clients of the Orland Township Food Pantry, which serves more than 300 families a month. Through the generosity of residents, civic groups and organizations, and local businesses, the Orland Township Holiday Program is able to provide a holiday meal, gifts and other personal items to more than 150 local families who are experiencing financial difficulties. There are several ways to participate in the Orland Township Holiday Program. • Culver’s Holiday Toy Drive: Orland Township is partnering with Culver’s of Orland Park to help provide toys to children in need. From now until Dec. 9, Culver’s will have a donation bin in their restaurant at 9130 W. 159th St. for patrons to drop off new, unwrapped toys that will be delivered to the Township for distribution. • Giving Tree: For those who enjoy making the holidays special for children, the Giving Tree contains tags with wish lists for children from newborns to age 16. • Adopt-A-Family: People can make the holidays brighter for an entire family by filling their wish lists of toys, clothing and other items. This is a popular idea for work, church, school and social groups. People can visit the Township office, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave., to choose tags from the Giving Tree or to Adopt-A-Family. • Item Donations: Contributions of food, toys, clothing and personal items can be dropped off at the Township. See the Township website, orlandtownship.org, for a list of suggested items. Gift and clothing items for teenagers and adults are usually in short supply and greatly appreciated, as are monetary donations. Donations for the Holiday Program can be dropped off at the Township office during regular business hours: 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and until 6 p.m. Tuesdays.
