12 | December 6, 2018 | The Northbrook tower news northbrooktower.com First Holiday Giveback promotes spirit of giving Hilary Anderson Freelance Reporter Dozens of Northbrook area families and friends gathered at the North Suburban YMCA’s first Holiday Giveback to participate in packing “blessings bags,” which were full of everyday essentials for those who are in need. The event, held Saturday, Dec. 1, was new to the community, but one all who attended found valuable and purposeful. “This is a great opportunity to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season,” said Kim Nyren, NSYMCA senior manager of community investment. Once packed, the bags contained travel-size toiletries and included items like Vaseline, Kleenex, soap, body lotion, granola bars, band-aids, toothpaste, hand-sanitizer, toothbrushes and washcloths. Many Y members and other Northbrook area residents donated many of the items, as did local businesses including Northwestern Medicine and Yummy Dental, of Glenview. Some guests spent their own money and bought additional items for the event. “We went to Target and bought needed hygiene things on the list,” said Dana Lenhoff and her sister, Abby. “We are home from college for the holiday season.” “Doing something like this puts us in the holiday spirit,” Abby said. The “blessing bags” station was operating with absolute efficiency thanks to the help of members of the Junior Girl Scout Troop 4l431 and Y employees including Eileen Mirochnick and Kathy Fielding. “Some people do not have things they need, so we are putting them in the bags for them,” Ava Pearlman, 8, said. Eden Fishman, 9, shared similar sentiments. “We are doing this to help people who cannot afford to buy their own,” she said. Many adults got into the giving spirit as well. “I am a member of the Y and heard about this Holiday Giveback program and thought it was a great way to help,” Larry Kuehn said. He was there with his daughters Brittany and Lauren. “It is so easy to come and help out for this worthy cause,” Kuehn added. “It is great to see people from the neighborhood here.” The three wrote and decorated kindness letters and chose precut snowmen or snowflakes for the task. Each letter would be put in a blessing bag. Meanwhile Karen Brownlee wrote kindness messages on a snowflake. “People need to know they are cared about and loved,” Brownlee said. Elsewhere the adults continued writing and decorating their kindness messages. Two sisters, Sherri Sheftel, of Highland Park, and Julie Hecktman, of Northbrook, took what they were doing to heart with the Y’s Holiday Giveback event. “We came often to the Y when we were kids and spent a lot of time here,” Hecktman said. “This is part of our giving back and it is so much fun.” Afterwards, there was Bailey Wesselink (left), 5, and Kylie Hatfield, 5, put together their holiday blessing bags on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the North Suburban YMCA’s inaugural Holiday Giveback. Parent volunteer Katie Rabenhorst took charge of giving out cookies for decorating purposes and making sure everyone had enough frosting and sprinkles. Her husband, Harry, and children Jacob, 15 and Annie, 13, were there assisting at the event. “I brought my family to the Y for this Holiday Giveback,” Rabenhorst said. “I want to give them and others the message it is important to help those who are not as fortunate as are we. It also is a way for them to get off their cell phones for a while.” Even the Y’s gymnastic coach, Dawn Irelan, made time to help. She distributed hot chocolate for guests during Sherri Sheftel, of Highland Park, and Julie Hecktman, of Northbrook, write messages of kindness on snowmen. the event. But a highlight for many was when Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped in to check on the action and get any last-minute updates as to what some believers wanted for Christmas. The blessing bags will be distributed to individuals through Project I Am and the YWCA Evanston/ North Shore. Project I Am provides the blessing bags to homeless individuals in the Chicagoland area. The YWCA’s Domestic Violence Programming will deliver blessings bags to individuals and families dealing with abuse across Northeastern Metropolitan Chicago.
