Consider supporting your local students
Martin Carlino
martin@northbrooktower.com
Several times in the
past, I’ve used this
space to applaud
the support I see this
community deliver to its
schools, particularly the
students at those schools.
I’ve mostly witnessed
that support firsthand at
Glenbrook North High
School, through events
I’ve covered at GBN.
But even further so,
I’ve heard the same from
our reporters who’ve
witnessed it at the middle
schools and junior high
schools throughout
Northbrook. One of the
great characteristics of
this community is the
multitude of events presented
by its schools each
year that give residents
the chance to enjoy the
excellent work of students.
It’s almost as if every
couple of weeks, there’s
a new chance to marvel
at the talents of Northbrook
students. And
with that, comes another
great chance to do so this
weekend.
Glenbrook North’s
Orchesis Dance Company
will present this year’s
dance show, “Devotion”
at 7 p.m. starting Thursday,
Dec. 6. The show
will also be performed
the next two nights, at the
same time, at GBN.
For more details about
this year’s show, and
additional insights from
the show’s directors and
dancers, please see Page
35 in this week’s issue.
When I had the chance
to speak with some of the
dancers, I could hear the
passion in their voices
when talking over this
year’s show. The dancers
I spoke with both
discussed just how much
they’ve practiced leading
up to these performances.
And when speaking
with Monica Mills, one
of the show’s directors,
I finished our interview
by asking her why she
believes the community
should come out to see
this show. I thought her
answer was wonderful,
and it reads as follows:
“I’m continually impressed
with the fact
that these are teenage
girls and the fact that
you get to witness their
confidence on stage and
their ability to take risks
with the different styles
so they get out of their
comfort zones ... it’s really
amazing to see that
play out.”
Tickets are $10 and
available at the door. I
encourage you to take
this — and the countless
other throughout the year
— opportunity to support
your local students. I can
certainly say they will appreciate
your support.
These are Club Shab students helping
out with counting money for the school’s
“Chores for Cheers” fundraiser. The
students raised $637 for the American
Red Cross through the effort. Way to go,
THE GLENCOE ANCHOR
Turkey Bowl grows
through the years in
Glencoe
On this year’s briskly
cold Thanksgiving morning,
about 70 people gathered
at the Central School
field for what has become
an annual Glencoe tradition,
the Turkey Bowl.
This football tournament
began about six
years ago with some local
families whose kids played
AYSO soccer together, and
the event has continued to
expand, having as many as
100 participants in some
years. This year, the group
got even further into the
Thanksgiving spirit and
included a winter clothing
collection to contribute to
the Evanston Soup Kitchen
Coat Drive.
With hot cocoa, donuts
and empanadas on the
sidelines, eight teams rotated
amongst four concurrent
touch football games.
Players as young as 6 years
old joined the tournament,
where there was no official
scoreboard and the only
prize was bragging rights,
though there wasn’t much
boasting coming from the
friendly group.
“It’s a great way for people
to get together,” said
organizer Danny Levin, of
Glencoe. “There’s a warm
feeling about it.”
