The Homer Glen Junior Woman’s Club is hosting their very first Spaghetti Dinner with Santa. Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for children ages 3-10. Children 2 and under are free. There is to also be holiday activities, including children’s crafts, letters to Santa, cookie decorating, visits with Santa and festive photo opportunities. A cash bar will also be available. homerhorizon.com news the Homer Horizon | December 6, 2018 | 3 Homer for the Holidays features tree lighting Gathering at Village Hall ushers in holiday season Laurie Fanelli, Freelance Reporter Village decides not to move forward with South Pointe development Village Hall transformed into the North Pole recently as families enjoyed crafts, choirs and Christmas cheer during Homer for the Holidays. Rudolph and his pals had the night off as the Homer Township Fire Protection District escorted Santa to the event — which took place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1 — before he sat down to take photos with families. The night concluded with the annual tree lighting ceremony signifying the start of the holiday season in the community. The entire event was bigger and better than ever in 2018. One of the most notable changes was that the tree lighting ceremony took place in front of Village Hall this year thanks to the donation of a 35-foot tree — generously given by Homer Glen residents Jim and Nancy Walker — which was transported by Homer Tree Care. There were also more craft tables led by several community organizations, including the Homer Township Public Library and Cross of Glory Lutheran Church. Amy’s Hallmark Shop helped attendees mail letters to Santa, and Fannie May made sure everyone who visited Old St. Nick left with a bag of treats. Village of Homer Glen administrative analyst Matt Walsh, who serves as the liaison to the Parks & Recreation Committee, was enthusiastic with how the entire community came together to make Homer for the Holidays a success. “We’ve had a lot of businesses and residents contribute to this, and both middle schools in town are singing tonight,” Walsh said of Homer Jr. High and Oak Prairie Junior High. “We’ve also added a dress your pet photo contest, so residents emailed pictures of their pets dressed up and people can vote on them during the event.” Homer Glen resident Darius Shanle makes a holiday craft at the Homer Township Public Library table at Homer for the Holidays, which was held Saturday, Dec. 1, at Village Hall. Parks & Recreation Committee member Mark Gawron was also enthusiastic about the new “amped up” event. Despite the rain — which unfortunately caused the cancelation of a planned holiday hayride along Heritage Circle — he still hoped attendees would drive through the winter wonderland of lights and inflatables on display at Heritage Park. “We’re going to encourage people to, when they leave, drive along Heritage Circle,” Gawron said. “It cuts right through the middle of Heritage Park. There’s inflatables, lights and decorations out there, and they can see the park.” Bert Abney and his young daughter, Kaylen, were looking forward to several elements of Homer for the Holidays, including hearing Toni Tarascio’s daughter, Mackayla Gaston, perform with the Oak Prairie choir. Above all else, Kaylen was excited to see Santa and give him a gift. “I have a surprise for him,” Kaylen said, whispering. “It’s a candy cane.” For his Christmas wish, Mayor George Yukich hopes for Homer Glen to continue to grow in community and prosperity. “I want to continue in the direction that we’re heading in right now and finish the [Heritage] Park,” Yukich said. Later, Yukich spoke of his gratitude for Village staff members, trustees and volunteers in his presentation prior to the tree lighting. Trustee Beth Rodgers — who co-chairs the Parks & Recreation Imagin Kemp sings “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” with the Oak Prairie Junior High choir at Homer for the Holidays. Committee with Trustee Christina Neitzke-Troike — especially enjoyed how Homer for the Holidays brought friends, neighbors and residents together for a night of festive fun. “I love this event,” Rodgers said. “It brings the community together, and everybody has a chance to see people that sometimes you only see once a year. Every year, we try to build and grow this event. Unfortunately, the rain hindered it a little bit this year, but it’s so nice to have everybody come together.” Event organizers have no plans to slow down, and they anticipate that Homer for the Holidays will continue to expand with each passing year. Community relations coordinator Sue Steilen was happy to have so many organizations, schools, businesses and residents from Homer Glen collaborate to celebrate the kickoff of the Christmas season for the community. “It brings the community together to have fun, and it brings the community together to participate in a way where everybody’s contributing,” Steilen said. “That’s what’s really nice, and it’s only going to grow more each year.” Staff Report Homer Glen Mayor George Yukich announced in a Friday, Nov. 30 press release that M/I Homes “will no longer move forward with the South Pointe development proposed for the 138-acre piece of land on 159th St. known commonly as the Dunn property.” “It was a business decision based on current economics and timing of the property,” said Matt Pagoria, who handles land acquisition for M/I Homes. Pagoria went on to say in the release that M/I Homes is still excited to be in Homer Glen and looks forward to beginning construction on the townhomes that are approved for The Square at Goodings Grove near Bell Road. The proposed South Pointe housing development originally came in front of the Plan Commission this past August and was met with mixed feedback from residents concerned about factors like housing density and overburdening of local schools and roads. The development was proposed to consist of three housing areas: a 115- unit, rear-loaded townhome area; a 113-unit, front-loaded townhome area; and an area consisting of 55 single-family homes. Phase II of the project was to include a small, 19.5- acre commercial development along the south side of 159th Street. Instead, the Village and M/I Homes turn their attention to The Square at Goodings Grove, approved by the Village Board in October as a mixed use project to include 76 townhomes with more than three acres of commercial frontage, according to the release. A final engineering review is in the process of concluding for that project, with a groundbreaking for the townhomes scheduled for the spring. “While this property did not work out for us,” Pagoria said of Southpointe, “M/I Homes will consider other opportunities in Homer Glen going forward.”
