will experience a welcoming
community, view
the exceptional facilities,
meet the dedicated faculty
and staff, and witness
testimonials from school
families regarding faithinfused
curriculum, academic
successes and lasting
friendships.
Benefits of a learning
community focused on
academics, faith and family
St. Mary School is a
vibrant and welcoming
Catholic school, serving
students in preschool
through grade eight. Since
1949, teachers have been
providing an extraordinary,
personalized learning
environment allowing
each student to achieve
their full potential. As a
result, St. Mary students
continue to flourish in and
out of the classroom.
“As parents, we have
an obligation to provide
our children with the best
possible education,” said
Frank Murray, St. Mary
St. Mary School offers
3-year-old preschool
through eighth grade.
Visitors are always impressed
with the school’s
facilities, which include a
music room, library, computer
lab, science lab, spacious
gymnasium and the
STEAM classroom.
The STEAM classroom
allows teachers to bring a
unique approach of teaching
to enhance student
learning and understanding
of how all things relate
to each other, in school and
in life. Unlike other STEM
programs, St. Mary’s program
also emphasizes the
integration of the arts, and
offers more creativity to
students in the learning
process. The STEAM program
and open classroom
setting allow teachers to
facilitate rather than lecture,
resulting in students
experiencing their education
as a process instead of
a final product.
St. Mary School also offers
a one-to-one technology
program that provides
each student in grades six
through eight with an individual
iPad, a class set
of iPads for grades three
through five, and kindergarten
through grade two
have designated classroom
iPads and SmartBoards for
educational use. Primary
students also benefit from
a certified reading specialist
and teacher aides.
opportunities and more
Students can enjoy many
after-school programs,
including band, chess,
is available for a fee from
AN EDUCATION FOR THE WHOLE CHILD,
A COMMUNITY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
Finding the perfect fit
Finding just the right
school is often a difficult
task. Parents spend hours
on tours and researching
online only to discover
that many schools have
different buildings, but the
same educational model.
It’s time to look for something
different — an individualized
approach that
supports children working
within their learning styles
and at their own pace, an
environment that sparks
their natural curiosity.
At Lupine Montessori
School, that spark
is fanned into a lifelong
quest for knowledge. The
compassionate and diverse
community is dedicated to
creating a nurturing environment
of confident, independent,
lifelong learners
by providing quality
Montessori education.
The Montessori approach
offers opportunities
to develop concentration
and critical thinking.
The multi-age classrooms
mimic a family structure
allowing younger children
to learn through example
while older students seize
the opportunity to lead.
This structure all works
seamlessly because there
is freedom within limits.
With the flexibility to
choose resources, areas of
study, and how they work,
students feed their fundamental
desire to learn. The
adults in the room act as
guides, creating supportive
environments where self
direction and exploration
are highly encouraged.
In that way, recognizing
and correcting errors is a
natural part of the learning
process. The result, as research
shows, is that Montessori
students are active,
enthusiastic and proud of
their academic work.
So what makes Lupine
different from other Montessori
schools? Parent
participation, transparency,
authenticity, peace
education, the natural
world and sustainable
environmental practices
are central to the Lupine
philosophy. A dedicated
and highly experienced
staff serves children from
preschool through adolescence
with energy and
compassion. By creating a
family of students, parents,
and board members, Lupine
brings the very best to
the community.
So, shop around, try everything
on and then visit
Lupine Montessori School
to feel the difference. Selfconfidence,
compassion,
independence, and a love
of learning are just the
right fit! Go to the website
to register for a “Look In”
or Open House today.
“This place is amazing!
If you are looking for an
environment that fosters
lifelong learning, search no
more! The head of school
is dedicated, brilliant, and
loving! Your child is her
child; the Lupine family is
strong!” — Tracy H.
“We are very happy to
have found Lupine Montessori
School. We were
welcomed to the Lupine
community with open
arms, and everyone, including
parents and children
have been so wonderful.
Lupine has the best educators,
[they] are extremely
passionate about what they
do.” — Valerie D.
“The best decision we
could have ever made, was
to place both our children
in this amazing school. We
love the academic advantage
they have, in addition
to being taught to think
critically. More importantly,
they are learning to
be an engaged member of
their community; helping
others, enjoying nature,
and being self reliant.” —
South Suburban Hearing looks to do more
than amplify sound with Livio AI
South Suburban Hearing
Health Center has worked with
many different types and brands
of hearing instruments, but in
most cases they all have one
major limitation: They are only
trying to restore a certain function
to the level that one would
expect in someone without a particular
disability.
That is utterly commendable,
but with modern technology it
is sometimes possible to go further
than this — to actually try to
raise certain senses or functions
beyond what you might normally
expect to find.
That is definitely the case for
a smart new hearing aid South
Suburban Hearing Health Center
is making available from
Starkey Hearing Technologies.
With its newly launched Livio
AI device, the company is reinventing
the humble hearing aid
for the machine-learning generation.
Not only does the Livio
hearing aid enhance one’s ability
to hear things, but it also can
automatically translate foreign
languages and even track physical
and mental well-being. Think
of it like the Babel fish from
“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the
Galaxy” — only with some extra
cool tech thrown in there for
good measure.
“I believe Livio AI heralds the
hearing industry’s iPhone moment,”
said Dr. Achin Bhowmik,
Starkey’s chief technology officer.
“The mobile phones prior to
the iPhone were single-purpose
devices, allowing us to make
phone calls. In contrast, today’s
smartphones are multipurpose
devices. Hearing aids have so
far been single-purpose devices,
as well, helping people hear
better by amplifying sound. We
are changing that with Livio AI.
With embedded sensors and artificial
intelligence, we are turning
the hearing aid into a multifunction
health-monitoring and multiuse
device that will help us lead
better lives in many more ways.
This is driven by our mission to
improve human lives through
technology.”
The next-gen hearing aid can
translate between 27 languages,
courtesy of a companion smartphone
application called Thrive.
If an English speaker says something
they wish to translate, the
words will appear in the selected
target language on their mobile
device, so they can show the other
person. If, on the other hand, a
person says something in a language
the wearer does not speak,
the words will be directly translated
into spoken English via the
earpiece.
The device also offers stepcounting
features, the ability to
quantify a “brain score” based
on active listening and social
engagement, and smart gestures
that allow wearers to control the
audio stream from a TV by double-tapping
their ear, rather than
having to stop and search for the
remote.
In the near future, Bhowmik
said, the hearing aid will also
be able to automatically detect
if the user falls down, using its
in-built sensors. If a fall is detected,
the hearing aid then will
immediately notify designated
emergency contacts by sending
alert messages.
St. Dennis School provides small class sizes, quality education
St. Dennis School is a loving environment
that provides a complete education
for the whole child. The school has been
embedded in the Lockport community
since 1881, built upon the foundation of
tradition and a vision for the future.
Small class sizes combined with a caring
and highly qualified faculty provide an
environment where students thrive. Supporting
multiple studies that show students
perform measurably better with more individualized
attention, an average of 80
percent of St. Dennis graduates earn honor
roll status as freshmen in high school.
Teachers utilize instructional strategies
that require student collaboration and critical
thinking skills. With the aid of multiple
tools for assessing students’ progress, teachers
personalize instructional strategies to
address individual learning needs as necessary.
The success of this approach is evident
in standardized test scores that continue to
range above the national averages.
St. Dennis students also meet or exceed
readiness/growth expectations at an average
of 75-80 percent annually. St. Dennis
teachers have the flexibility to utilize different
instructional approaches to engage
students. The school offers state-of-the-art
embedded technology throughout the curriculum
at all grade levels, with SMART
Boards in every class for increased student
engagement, and 1-to-1 iPads in grades
K-8. The use of technology throughout
the school provides students with access
to countless learning tools that reinforce
the core standards taught in ways that appeal
to the modern learner. Students are
given alternative ways to synthesize information
they have learned and present
it in a creative format.
St. Dennis students have access to an
outstanding fine arts program at St. Dennis.
Art teacher Lisa Boyer, who has been
recognized by the publication Celebrating
Art as a Teacher of Distinction, is quick to
point out that children who participate in
visual arts are statistically proven to perform
better on tests.
“Art processes and realistic drawing
specifically help teach problem-solving
skills and develop concentration and visual
perception skills that carry over to
many other areas,” she said. “It also promotes
relaxation and creative energy.”
The school’s award-winning Jubilation
and Chime Choirs, which participate in
annual solo and ensemble competitions
as well as Christmas and spring musicals,
provide students with another creative
outlet. Students also have opportunities
to be involved in no-cut athletics, a Technology
Apprentice Program and Battle of
the Books. St. Dennis School enhances
traditional classroom religious instruction
with the Catechesis of the Good
Shepherd program to teach students about
their faith. In addition, students in grades
K-8 plan and participate in weekly school
Mass. Active participation in service projects
is an integral part of students’ call to
stewardship. Full sacramental preparation
is part of daily Catholic instruction. Student
role models mentor younger students
through the school-wide buddy system.
Catholic education is affordable and accessible.
Financial aid, scholarships and
monthly payments for tuition and fees are
available, including the Tuition Transfer
Grant, available for students transferring
from a public school.
Chicago Christian
High School
Service Learning: Students
at Southwest Chicago
Christian Schools connect
with homeless neighbors
Southwest Chicago Christian Schools
(preschool through eighth grade, Tinley
Park and Oak Lawn) and Chicago Christian
High School (Palos Heights) have
been serving the southwest Chicago area
for more than a century.
The schools are known for their transformational
education and skilled faculty.
A central part of their focus is to instill
students with a love of serving. The two
elementary campuses work closely with
Roseland Christian Ministries each November.
Roseland Christian Ministries
runs a food pantry and a shelter for women
and children in south Chicago. They work
with homeless and needy individuals.
Every year, students spend the month
of November collecting toiletries, cleaning
supplies and Thanksgiving food. They
pack these items up in individual boxes —
a fully array of supplies in each box, each
one perfect for a family or individual.
Then, the students deliver these boxes
to Roseland Christian Ministries in time
for the Thanksgiving holiday. Last month,
students delivered more than 325 boxes.
And while the students are learning to
serve, they also experience how Roseland
Christian Ministries cares for their community.
As part of the delivery, students toured
the campus and met with many of the individuals
the ministry serves. Students and
those they were serving sat together, talking
and praying. When asked what they
learned, student answers included.
• I learned that we all have hearts and can
love one another.
• This experience opened my eyes to the
needs of my community.
• This experience taught me that helping
in any small way matters.
At Roseland Christian Ministries last
month, students also interviewed volunteers
and constituents as part of an essay
project. The students spent an entire morning
connecting and learning about the lives
of the volunteers and constituents.
New Chicago Christian High School
Principal Mike Drury is looking at additional
ways the school can team up with
Roseland Christian Ministries.
Southwest Chicago Christian Schools
are serious about serving their neighbors.
The campuses have teamed up with St.
Baldrick’s Foundation for childhood cancer
research, World Vision, Special Olympics
and Elim Christian School and Services,
among others. This month, they are
collecting toys for Restoration Ministries
in Harvey.
St. Joseph School sets
students up for the future
How does one measure a
successful school?
St. Joseph School could
easily be measured by the
numerous national awards
with which the school
has been honored over
the years, as well as the
above-average test scores
demonstrated year after
year. However, principal
Lynne Scheffler looks for
an even higher measure
than national test scores
and awards.
“As a staff, our target
is not just the present performance
of our students,
but above all their future,”
Scheffler said. “Knowing
that we have prepared our
students for the next part
of their educational career,
and for living a good life,
is the true measure of the
successful foundation that
the St. Joseph education
provides.”
Each year, St. Joseph
School measures success
according to its mission
of forming true leaders
by guiding all students to
their highest levels of spiritual
and academic potential.
That mission has been
clearly demonstrated by
the graduates of the Class
of 2018. More than 80
percent of students placed
in advanced coursework
and honors level in high
school. Together, this
class completed more than
1,000 hours of service to
the local community. In
addition, this class grew
in faith by their commitment
to attending Mass
each weekend at a rate of
90 percent throughout the
year.
The graduates of 2018
performed at unmatched
levels and received awards
that demonstrate the value
of the educational environment
provided at St. Joseph.
Seven students from
the SJS Class of 2018 received
a combined total of
$65,000 in scholarships to
Joliet Catholic Academy
and Providence Catholic
High School. While
St. Joseph School alumni
have received tremendous
amounts of college scholarships
and high school
scholarships in the past,
for one class to receive
$65,000 in high school
scholarships is recordsetting.
These scholarship
awards were based on top
entrance exam test scores
along with scholarships
for leadership, service and
character.
“I wasn’t surprised that
these students received the
scholarships,” Scheffler
said. “They are hardworking
and dedicated students
who have been recognized
for their service,
integrity, and scholastic
achievement for years at
SJS. These scholarships
confirm that the formula
for success begins with
an effective partnership
with parents, students who
achieve their personal
best, and the commitment
of dedicated teachers to
guide faith development
and academic studies.
This is what St. Joseph is
known for; this is what we
work towards; and indeed,
this is our success story.”
Will St. Joseph School
watch their alumni in the
next four years with wellfounded
anticipation that
college scholarships will
be part of the students’ futures?
Absolutely!
“We have no doubt that
these students, right in line
with our past and future
alumni, will be successful,”
Scheffler said. “We
can’t wait to see the college
admission letters and
college scholarships coming
their way! There are
no limits to their continued
success. They are ready to
lead, to serve, and to succeed!
Every child should
be so lucky to have the
foundation that St. Joseph
provides.”
St. Joseph School has
scholarship funds available
for students transferring
from local schools
and families that desire the
incredible Catholic education
that St. Joseph provides.
St. Michael School offers a leading Catholic education in Chicago area
With more than 600 students
from pre-kindergarten
through eighth grade,
St. Michael School is a
leading Catholic school in
the greater Chicago area.
St. Michael School in
Orland Park is proud to offer
a faith-based, competitive
and rigorous academic
education to all students.
In 2013, St. Michael was
nationally recognized as a
Blue Ribbon School, exhibiting
a continued dedication
to higher student
achievement.
During the past two
years, St. Michael School
has made curriculum and
instruction a primary focus.
St. Michael School
remains competitive with
the surrounding public
schools, while offering a
tight-knit community.
Recently, SMS integrated
Chromebooks and
Google Classroom for all
students in grades 4-8. In
addition, the school’s technology
center is home to
30 HP Elite 8300 business
desktop all-in-one computers.
Beginning in kindergarten,
students attend
weekly sessions on keyboarding,
word-processing,
blogging and internet safety.
Students also learn how
to research and develop
multimedia presentations
and programming. IPads
are a large part of the technology
program and are
used regularly within primary
classrooms.
St. Michael is the only
school in Orland Park to
host a language program
that requires students to
study Spanish beginning
in kindergarten and continuing
through eighth
grade. The math program
continues to utilize blended
learning and focus on
alignment with other core
subjects and real-world
scenarios in order to provide
a balance, as well as
a deeper understanding of
math concepts and skills.
St. Michael School is
expanding its reading and
writing initiatives through
the Daily 5, an Archdiocese
of Chicago national
certification, and the Harvard
Data Wise program.
The teachers of St. Michael
School continue
to create innovative and
engaging ways to learn,
so that all students feel
comfortable and are more
likely to advance.
Because of St. Michael’s
focus on faith, students learn
important social-emotional
skills on a daily basis. St.
Michael’s daily curriculum
provides invaluable education
in self-awareness, selfmanagement,
social awareness,
relationship skills and
responsible decision-making
skills. This exposure to a
faith-based education, along
with social-emotional learning,
encourages students to
build successful family and
community bonds. This also
provides a solid foundation
for safe and positive learning,
while enhancing students’
ability to succeed in
school and in life.
The community surrounding
St. Michael
School prepares students
for high school, as well
as real-life experiences.
St. Michael School prides
itself on producing students
who are successful
and continue to uphold the
morals and values of the
Catholic community.
In addition to an excellent
education, St. Michael
School offers a convenient
Extended Day program and
a full-time school nurse to
meet the needs of each student
and their family. Fulland
half-day options are
available for pre-kindergarten
3- and 4-year-olds.
Other school features
include art and science
clubs, robotics club, yearbook,
mock trial, FIRST
LEGO League and video
club. Students interested
in sports can participate in
basketball, cheerleading,
football, golf, soccer, cross
country and volleyball.
Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School
designs programs of success for each child
Cardinal Joseph Bernardin
Catholic School, recognized for
the second time by the U.S. Department
of Education as a Blue
Ribbon School of Excellence in
both 2008 and 2018, is proud
of its commitment to provide a
top-rated academic experience
as well as a safe learning environment
centered in faith. CJB
welcomes students in 3-yearold
Pre-K through eighth grade
with a focus on developing each
student’s spiritual, intellectual,
emotional, creative, physical and
social needs.
As an academic institution,
CJB School is dedicated to
designing an individual program
of success for each child.
These learning experiences include
opportunities to challenge
and enrich talents, strategies
to compensate for weaknesses,
and programs designed to give
children the skills to succeed in
the 21st century. Additionally,
through fair, firm and consistent
discipline, children grow
in responsible decision-making,
self-esteem, and self-respect. We
believe that the focus of the Cardinal
Joseph Bernardin Catholic
School experience is to motivate
students to become self-confident,
life-long learners. The
school’s goal is to prepare students
to be responsible members
of their community, able to interact
with people of all races and
nationalities as they go out into
the world. Through the example
of the staff and the daily experiences
of the curriculum, children
learn the truths of our faith, participate
in parish life, experience
a variety of liturgies and prayer
services, and respond to the call
of service to those in need.
Cardinal Bernardin students
develop their own personal identities
while maximizing their
God-given talents. They are expected
to be respectful, accepting
and cooperative with each
other and with their teachers.
Our hope is that the Cardinal
Bernardin student approaches
learning with openness and eagerness,
while remaining joyful
in their endeavors, appreciative
of their opportunities, and willing
to share with others as they
grow in faith and wisdom.
Recognizing that parents are
the primary educators of their
children, the staff supports, supplements,
and enriches all experiences
of family. Parents play a
critical role in the support and
enhancement of the educational
and faith development of their
child.
From academics to athletics,
from faculty to facilities, from
before- to after-school care, CJB
is the Blue Ribbon school of
choice.
The following is a column by
Ryan Schaul MPT, CIMT
A physical therapist’s perspective on the big picture
“Why are we working
on my abdominals when
it’s my ankle that bothers
me?”
I’ve heard this question
or something similar many
times, usually when my
patient is fatiguing from
said abdominal strengthening
exercises. I love
this question, because it
allows me to impart some
knowledge onto the patient
about how function of one
or more body parts can affect
seemingly unrelated
ailments.
The human body is an
amazing and complicated
structure and rarely does
one body part operate
independently of others
when performing a task.
The body is designed to
operate in a specific way to
accomplish movements in
an effective and efficient
manner. When this occurs,
we are able to complete
activities such as walking,
squatting and reaching
without difficulty or discomfort.
When there is a
“weak link” in the system,
one area which is not functioning
correctly, it can result
in dysfunction either
at that area or at a different
area of the body. Each joint
is connected to the next by
a group of muscles, therefore,
it is important to look
at the area in question as
well as the whole chain
and its function as a unit.
Every body has the capability
of compensating,
of changing our movement
patterns, to avoid and/
or bypass limitations or
weaknesses. It is when our
body runs out of compensations
that we feel pain.
The painful symptoms
may be a recent development,
but the dysfunction
has probably been present
for much longer. Any
change in the body’s normal
movement patterns
can result in inhibition
and/or overuse of groups
of muscles. While compensations
can be an effective
way to complete a task
in the short term, consistent
compensatory movement
patterns can result in
tissue irritation and altered
mechanics of our joints.
Let’s look at an example
to illustrate this point.
What if I were to tell you
that the low back pain that
you have been experiencing
is possibly the result
of decreased range of motion
in your ankle? Some
of my patients are quite
skeptical when I point to
a body part located so far
away from their symptoms
as the possible culprit until
I explain the mechanics
to them. If you are unable
to pull your foot toward
your shin while walking,
you would wind up dragging
your toes because
you are unable to clear
the ground when you step.
You obviously don’t want
to walk around dragging
your toes on the ground,
so your body is going to
find a way around this by
either swinging the leg out
to the side or by exaggerating
how high you raise
your hip. These compensations
are slight and most
people will not even notice
that they are doing them.
In this scenario, we have
changed the normal mechanics
of the leg which is
in turn going to affect the
hip muscles and how they
function. Now the tissues
in the low back and hip
start to overwork, become
guarded and irritated and
are prime for an injury
when you go to bend over
to pick something up.
Seem complicated? It
can be, but physical therapists
are experts in assessing
the normal movement
patterns of the body. Our
goal is to find the cause of
your symptoms so they do
not return. To accomplish
this, we need to look at
your whole body and how
it functions as a unit — the
“Big Picture”. If you feel
like you could benefit from
an assessment, please do
not hesitate to contact our
offices directly. Illinois is
now a direct access state,
which means you no longer
need a prescription
from your doctor. Just
don’t be surprised if we
look at your ankle to treat
your back pain.
Providence Catholic students have the college advantage
Last year, Providence
Catholic graduates earned
nearly $40 million in college
scholarship offers,
and 100 percent of the
Class of 2018 are enrolled
in college.
“As a college prep
school, parents and students
expect the school
to help them prepare for
the college search,” said
Rachel Ellingson, director
of student enrollment at
the school. “Our families
are counseled as early as
freshman year to be proactive
in their search for the
right fit for college.”
The Counseling Department
at Providence Catholic
High School has many
responsibilities, which
include providing information
to students that
enables them to make wise
decisions essential to their
spiritual, academic, social
and emotional growth.
One of the things that
sets them apart from other
schools is the expertise
and experience provided
by the college counselors,
Kyle Murphy and Frank
Palmasani, who between
them have more than 50
years of counseling experience.
This experience is evident
when the school hosts
its annual “Conquering
College Costs” seminar
by Palmasani, who is the
author of “Right College,
Right Price.” Palmasani is
a nationally recognized author
and expert in college
choice. He explains how
to greatly increase scholarship
and grant potential of
students with a few important
steps.
“We meet face to face
with each junior and their
parents to discuss their individual
path to college,”
said Kyle Murphy, a longtime
college counselor at
the school. “We meet in
small groups to provide
them with strategies to
choose the best college for
their student, academically
and financially. These
are important choices for
the families, and we do
everything we can do to
help them make informed
choices in a timely manner.”
Beginning with freshman
year, all PCHS families
are introduced to the
Naviance student software
for college planning.
Naviance is a portal for
students and parents that
includes goal-setting, college
search tools, career
exploration and more.
Providence also hosts
a Spring College Fair for
students and families,
which roughly 60 colleges
and universities attend.
The counseling department
also hosts Parent
College Nights for parents
of student from all four
years. Each presentation is
customized to the information
pertinent that particular
year of high school.
“With a high percentage
of PCHS students receiving
college athletic scholarships,
the department
also hosts a College Athletic
Information Night to
discuss NCAA and NAIA
rules and regulations for
athletic recruiting and
scholarships,” said Luke
Senffner, director of counseling
at PCHS.
A newsletter is transmitted
to families to keep
them abreast of all college-related
information.
Independent scholarship
opportunities are included.
“Our students enjoy an
advantage over other high
school students,” Ellingson
said. “We say we are
college prep, and we back
it up with 100 percent of
our graduates matriculating
onto college when they
leave Providence.”
