Annual auction raises money for scholarships
The VFW Post 9545 post
was filled with more than
350 women waiving numbered
bidding paddles during
an annual live auction
that raises money to give
back locally.
The Lincoln-Way Area
Business Women Organization’s
one and only annual
fundraiser of the year, which
occurred Dec. 5, raises money
for scholarships to give to
women for continuing their
education.
“It only takes one night to
raise the money needed for
more than 10 scholarships,”
Past LWABWO President
Christine Hunt said. “This
is the most effective way to
raise money for this cause.”
The event sold an array of
gift baskets donated by local
businesses ranging from holiday
knick-knacks to tickets
for Fiddler on the Roof to a
Cooper’s Hawk wine club
membership. Twenty-three
mystery “gold” baskets,
(Left to right) Lynore Taylor, of New Lenox; Maureen Oland,
of Chicago; and Julie Yackley of Lemont bid during the live
auction to benefit women furthering their education.
which contain cash and other
prizes, were each auctioned
off for hundreds of dollars.
Last year more than
$16,000 was raised. That
money was enough for 17
scholarships, given to young
women from the Lincoln-
Way area for educational
expenses.
“Every dollar counts,”
current LWABWO President
Nancy Dye said. “The
community embraces this
event each year. They look
forward to it because they
understand the value of what
this night does for the community.”
As the annual event
grows, so does the money it
brings in. This year, $15,000
was raised.
“Our scholarship winners
are always impressive,” Dye
said. “Our hope is that this
scholarship can start them
off on the right foot.”
