six bullets while responding
to the mass shooting.
Five of those bullets were
determined to have been
fired by the shooter, Ian David
Long, but the fatal bullet
was the result of friendly
fire by a California Highway
Patrol officer, officials
announced Friday, Dec. 7.
Chris R. Young, chief
medical examiner for Ventura
County, spoke at a press conference
to reveal the news.
Young stated that the five
bullets fired by Long caused
“serious injuries, but potentially
survivable injuries.”
The sixth bullet struck Helus
in the chest, eventually
making its way to his heart.
That bullet, which was
examined by the Federal
Bureau of Investigation’s
“This is sad news and a
tragedy, but ultimately this
was the most severe injury
sustained,” Young added.
Ventura County Sheriff
Bill Ayub also commented
on the news, providing perspective
on the response to
the mass shooting.
“This was a dynamic,
chaotic event that led to a
evacuation orders because
of the Woolsey Fire. Upon
her return, she noticed her
home had been ransacked
and items missing. A surveillance
system showed
that three men entered her
home on Nov. 17 using an
unlocked sliding door on
the second floor to gain
entry.
at $20,000 reportedly
when homes were evacuated
during the Woolsey
Fire. The alleged victim
reported that when he arrived
back at his home
on Nov. 24, he found a
sliding door window was
broken and the home ransacked.
• A $4,000 MacBook, a
$3,000 PC laptop, a $750
flash drive, and a passport,
credit cards, license
a residence on Guernsey
Avenue. The alleged
victim stated that he
evacuated his residence
on Nov. 9 because of the
Woolsey Fire. He returned
to collect a few items
from his home on Nov.
22 and left shortly after.
• A Chanel purse, a Cashmere
purse and scarf, and
various jewelry, clothing
victim evacuated the home
on Nov. 9 because of the
Woosley Fire, and noticed
brief but furious gun battle
between the killer and the
lawmen,” Ayub said.
The incident remains under
investigation, but the
CHP officer has been informed
of the news and is
not currently on duty, officials
stated.
“This was something that
unfolded over the course of
just a few seconds, so it was
very dynamic, very fastpaced,
so that’s part of our
ongoing investigation,” Ayub
said. “Once those details are
revealed, we’ll share those.”
