malibusurfsidenews.com sports Malibu surfside news | December 13, 2018 | 35 Pepperdine Athletics Women’s tennis brings title back from France Pepperdine junior Ashley Lahey won three singles matches over three days, and helped the U.S. Master’U Collegiate team defeat returning champions Great Britain, 4-1, Dec. 2 to win the team’s eighth Master’U by BNP Paribas international collegiate team competition title in the last 10 years in Grenoble, France. Lahey joined other men’s and women’s collegiate standouts from across the nation, including UCLA’s Jada Hart and Duke’s Maria Mateas on the women’s side and USC’s Brandon Holt, Florida’s Oliver Crawford and Georgia’s Emil Reinberg on the men’s side. In the final, Lahey, Crawford and Holt won in singles, then Mateas and Hart paired up to clinch the title for the U.S. with a victory in doubles. Each team match consisted of two men’s and two women’s singles matches, one women’s and one men’s doubles match and a mixed doubles match. The Americans were coached by Boise State men’s coach Greg Patton and University of California, Berkeley women’s coach Amanda Augustus. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Idaho State defeats Pepperdine The Waves led with just over two minutes to play Saturday, Dec. 8, against Idaho State, but a couple late turnovers led to the team’s second loss of the season. Pepperdine fell 65- 63 to Idaho State. Idaho State started off with the hot hand, scoring the first seven points. The Waves’ first points came on Sitanggan’s first two free throws of the game. Pepperdine ended the first period on a 4-2 run, but trailed 22-16 going into the second quarter. The teams Gratitude surged through Pepperdine’s Firestone Fieldhouse Dec. 3 as the men’s basketball team hosted CSUN in a ballgame honoring first responders who fought the Woolsey Fire. “Hosting the game was a way to say thanks to the first responders who protected us and served,” associate head coach Ken Bone told the Surfside News. “While a lot of Malibu was out of town because people were evacuated, the first responders stuck around, fought hard and protected citizens.” Before the game began, LA County Fire Department Battalion Chief Doug LaCount presented the game ball to referee Chris Rastatter. First responders of all varieties were invited, including fire personnel, law enforcement officials, emergency medical personnel and members of Pepperdine’s Department of Public Safety, and the university’s firefighters. First responders and other spectators were in for a fast-action match. Colbey Ross, a point guard, scored 24 points and contributed 11 assists, including his second point-assist double-double in the Waves’ last three games, and matching his career best in assists that he set two games ago. For much of the first half, the Waves led, stretching their lead to 10 points at 23-13, 25-15 and 27-17. Sophomore Jade’ Smith had nine points and five rebounds before leaving the game due to an injury. Despite the huge press by Pepperdine, CSUN surged late in the half, taking a 44-42 lead. As the second half launched, senior forward Darnell Dunn scored a bucket and Ross sunk a 3-pointer, as the Waves enjoyed a 57-52 lead with 16 minutes left. In the next six minutes, CSUN answered strongly, culminating in were relatively equal in the second quarter, with each scoring 13 points, sending the game to halftime with the Bengals leading 35-29. The Bengals started the second half on a 7-2 run, and did not let up, leading the Waves by nine at the end of the third quarter. Pepperdine took its first lead with just two minutes to play in the game on a Megan House jumper. With the game tied at 63 with 22 seconds left, the Waves had the ball, but an offensive foul led to an open layup for Idaho State, giving the Bengals the win. Earlier in the week, at their Dec. 5 home opener, the Waves dominated visiting Weber State 68-47. Robinson-Bacote led all scorers with 23 points, Sitanggan the Matadors leading 69-59. The Waves trailed for the rest of the game, only bringing the gap within six points. CSUN led by as many as 17 points in the final minutes. Ultimately, CSUN posted a 90- 83 win. Senior guard Eric Cooper Jr. helped the Waves’ cause by making four 3-pointers and scoring 17 points. Dunn scored 12 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. “We had a great event and we were very excited to honor and recognize all the hard work by the first responders,” said Hilary Koenig, marketing and events manager for Pepperdine Athletics. “All the guests received a complimentary T-shirt to mark the occasion and free concessions, because we wanted to show our gratitude to them for protecting Pepperdine University, its students and Malibu citizens.” Three days later, the Waves traveled to UC Riverside, where they had a season-high 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Rose Pflug had a season-high 11 pints, shooting a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc.
