It is the force that moves him forward. “For me, music is every bit as crucial as breathing, blood, water — it’s that important to me,” Bellah said. Now, Bellah can add another chapter into the story of his life with music, as the local rocker has released his first album of original music, titled “Think Outside The Burning Box.” It’s a record that has been beating a drum inside of his head for decades. All about music Music has always been a part of Bellah’s life. At age 4, he started singing. At 14, he picked up a guitar. “It’s just like everybody: In high school, you feel a little bit out of sorts,” he said. “You’re growing and learning about yourself. Picking up an instrument really helped me kind of find myself.” What he found in that discovery of self through music – among other things – was an appreciation for all types and sounds of music. “I love everything,” Bellah said. “I listen to everything, from classical to heavy metal to blues, jazz, instrumental … it’s always been a big part of who I am as a musician is the versatility. I feel just as comfortable doing an Elvis tune as I do singing Stone Temple Pilots or Bad Company.” A long time coming After playing in bands throughout high school, Bellah began to hit his stride in adulthood – playing solo or with groups all over the place. Currently, he also sings for the band 8-Track, which covers rock songs from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. “If you like going to a real rock ‘n’ roll experience show, come see this band,” Bellah said. “It’s a real fun, upbeat show.” Along the way, Bellah has played Sammy Hagar’s club in Cabo San Lucas to bars in the southwest suburbs. He’s been in some bands that have been opener for musical acts such as Heart, The Smithereens, Soul Asylum and Foghat. “It’s been quite a journey,” Bellah said. But there is one arena in music that Bellah still hadn’t entered into previously – releasing a record of original material. He said he had wanted to create his own album for 20 years. Recently, with his children getting older and Bellah being in a good place financially, everything started falling into place. So, he hit the studio. “I spent 150 hours in the studio creating this CD,” he said. While most records focus in on a specific genre, Bellah said his album is eclectic. “The CD takes people on a journey, where you don’t know what’s going to come up from Song 1 to Song 2 to Song 3 or Song 4,” Bellah said. “It’s all over the map.” The album title is “Think Outside The Burning Box” – an idea, complete with plans for the cover art, he said he came up with in his 20s. “What that essentially means is don’t pigeonhole yourself into one particular genre,” he said of the album title. “Be open and listen to everything else. With me, not only think outside the box but completely destroy the box. Don’t even have a box in the first place.” For the music, Bellah said he performed all the vocal harmonies and guitar work. “The CD — front to back — is my baby,” he said. “This is by far the most gratifying and huge moment for me, musically, far and away. I can only liken it to the birth of a child, because you’re creating things.” Bellah pointed to three tracks on the record that would give listeners a window into who he is as a musician. And just like the record, it starts with the album’s opening song, “Heart in Chains.” “It’s kind of like if AC/ DC did a pop song,” Bellah described. “It showcases the harmonies I can bring to the table. It is rocking, but it’s not over the top.” On Track 3, titled “Running Out of Love,” Bellah found inspiration from bands he’s loved. “It would be like if Paul Rodgers, the singer of Bad Company, joined the Eagles,” Bellah said of the song. “He’s always been my biggest vocal influence. It starts off kind of acoustically, almost like ‘Feel Like Making Love’ by Bad Company or ‘Shooting Star.’ But it slowly starts to get into more of the rock [sound] as it goes along. It builds.” Then, there is Track 8, titled, “Madame Soul.” Bellah described it as the “hardrocker” of the bunch. “It is over the top,” he said. “It’s this really rocking song.” The ‘ultimate rush’ For Bellah, the experience has been intensely gratifying in putting together the record – and it has added another facet to his lifelong New Lenox resident Dave Bellah recently released his first album, “Think Outside The Burning Box.” Photos Submitted Dave Bellah also sings for the band 8-Track, which covers rock songs from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. slow dance with music. “I don’t drink or do drugs — nothing,” Bellah said. “Rock ‘n’ roll is my addiction. “It’s who and what I am, right down to the core of my being. Nothing is better than being out performing live in front of people, having a great time and getting into the show — dancing, screaming and going nuts.
