DIGITISING EUROPEAN INDUSTRY
How the EU can support your business productivity and sustainability
BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT:
While Europe scores fairly well on digitalisation as shown by its results on the International Digital Economy and Society Index
(Annex 1), several studies show that Europe and its businesses have not reached yet the full potential of digitalisation to
increase innovation, productivity and sustainability. Therefore, the European Commission is offering governments, industries,
businesses and other key stakeholders a place to gather: Digitising European Industry.
This initiative includes five main pillars:
1. A common European platform coordinating national strategies;
2. Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs): clusters for industrial research and innovation;
3. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) and sector-specific digital industrial
platforms (DIPs);
4. A digital-friendly regulatory system on cybersecurity and free flow of data;
5. Programmes to educate and reskill European citizens for the digital age.
BECOME A FACTORY OF THE FUTURE
Being the innovation leader of your sector is now easier, thanks to the Public Private Partnerships set up by the EU. Factories
of the Future is the stronger example of PPP, in which the European Commission and private counterparts join their forces to
help manufacturing enterprises to meet increasing global consumer demand for greener, more customised and higher quality
products. They do it through the development of a public-private led network of digital technology partners who share tools,
best practices, and influence European R&I. You can also check some sector specific initiatives in the sectors of Cybersecurity,
Photonics, High Performance Computing, Robotics, Future internet, ECSEL.
