big table farm
Brian Marcy & Clare Carver
Each December I have a chance to reflect on my experience with
thousands of wines during the year and the people who create them. A list
of the top 100, 50 or 20 would be possible but in the end what does it
really mean? I would spend a lot of time compiling a list where
determining the Number 1 wine is arbitrary at best and that is all anyone
cares about. There is enough of that already.
I choose one winery because my recognition needs to represent more than
just who made the top scoring wine (or the 15 th ), and it is much easier for
people to remember a single winery. I selected big table farm for a couple
reasons. First, it was time to recognize a producer in the Willamette
Valley, then there is also the concept of authenticity and quality going
hand in hand. Where there is one, usually also the other.
Big table farm is that, a farm with a big table as much as it is a winery.
Brian makes the wine and Clare tends to the animals and the garden as
well as designs the labels that are imaginative pen and ink renderings of
the cycle of life on the farm that barely hint at her skilled work in oil
painting. Combining two passions is obviously very much important to
what I do and for Brian and Clare it is no different. The devotion to
making wines of beautiful purity and finesse balanced with a reverence for
design, craft and art.
Studio 1529 spent a morning in October with Brian and Clare at their
home and winery shooting images. I hope that you enjoy the effort I
include here. Special thanks to my friend Ian Burrows for fetching gear,
managing the lights and crushing umbrellas. Reviews of the 2016 vintage
will appear in volume 7.3 shortly.
About purely domestic wine report
Following a two-decade career purchasing and writing about wines for some of the most influential retailers
in the U.S., I launched purely domestic wine report in 2011 to fill a missing piece in the world of wine
opinion. No other publication covers the wines of California, Oregon and Washington exclusively. It issues
four reports annually and is available in digital and 1200 dpi art-catalog-quality print version. It is
independently owned, free of advertising and available by subscription. More information is available at
www.pdwr.co
About studio 1529
As the publication grew and evolved, there was a need to add high-quality imagery. In Fall 2018, studio
1529 was created to provide professional level imagery services embedded to purely domestic wine report,
and also other interested individuals and producers of wine. More information and a client portfolio may be
found at www.studio1529.com
Both are owned by Doug Wilder of San Francisco, and Sonoma Valley
