Dec. 13. approximately 30 people showed up to support the local Stettler based business. Deanna Johnson was the winner of a large door prize that included a variety of goodies to go along with the holiday cheer of December. ECA Review/T.Huxley OBITUARY Instilled importance of farm values Margaret Elizabeth Rowe (nee Dornan), age 87, passed away peacefully on Dec. 16, 2018 at the Red Deer Hospice surrounded by her family. She was born on March 21, 1931 to her parents, Norman and Annie Dornan, on the homestead near Finnegan, Ab. Margaret is survived by her daughter Anne (Randy) Karren; sons: John Rowe, Len (Cheryl) Rowe and George (Julie) Rowe; four grandchildren, Trevor, Jeff, Koryn and Megan and two great grandchildren: Nathan on July 4, 1953 on the Dornan farm and this past summer would have been their 65th wedding anniversary. Lorne and Margaret lived on the Rowe farm near Stanmore for nearly 40 years. After getting married, Margaret taught school at Westover, north of the Rowe farm and then Stanmore School until it closed in 1960. Margaret and Lorne raised their family on the farm and instilled the importance of farm values, Rowe also known as the Farmers Creed, in their children. They also raised Hereford cattle of which they were very proud. Besides helping Lorne on the farm, Margaret crocheted and knitted and took a keen interest in genealogy and history. This led Margaret to help out and become president of the History Book Club, which published the Prairie Rose Country. Margaret also judged record books for the Youngstown 4-H Club for a number of years. After moving to Hanna in 1990, Margaret volunteered by delivering Meals on Wheels, helping the Hanna Food Bank and then later becoming the president of the Hanna Food Bank. Margaret enjoyed visiting and playing cards with friends and family. She enjoyed many bus trips with Lorne to various parts of Canada and the USA in their retirement. Margaret enjoyed her time living at the Hanna Manor and most recently the Hanna Lodge. and Owen; and three siblings: Doris Husty, Lawrence Dornan and Catherine Wiens. Margaret was predeceased by her husband Lorne in March 2018; a son, Richard in 2016; her father, Norman in 1976 and her mother, Annie in 2009. Being the oldest of four children and growing up in the 1930’s, Margaret learned at an early age to help out on the family farm with milking cows, cleaning the barn, shearing sheep, riding and breaking horses, haying and gardening. Margaret attended her elementary school years in Connersville School near her parent’s farm; completed her Grade 9 in Brooks; Grade 10 in Hanna while living in the Hanna Dormitory and Grades 11 and 12 in Sunnynook, Ab. where she met Lorne, who was also going to school there. Margaret completed her teaching certificate from Calgary Normal School and began her teaching career at Cando, a one-room school near Big Stone, Ab. Margaret and Lorne were married Married in 2018 ? ECA rE viE w HANNA/CoroNAtioN /StE ttlE r, Ab J ANu A ry 3'19 9 OBITUARIES Worked almost fifty years in Magnet Store, Castor Helen Marie (Battle) Bowen was born Oct. 9, 1922, and passed away on Dec. 19, 2018, in Stettler. Mom was born at home on the family farm during a time when the Italian (Angelozzi) grandparents were visiting. Mom started her schooling at Enterprise School and finished her schooling in Delia, Ab. Mom loved the farm life. She was particularly fond of Grandpa’s horses and working in the fields along with her brothers. Apparently, she did this so Grandpa would let her play ball. This was one of the loves of her life. She was very proud of the fact that they were the youngest Bowen team in the Provincial Playoffs one year and came in second to a “much older” team. She also loved curling, camping, travelling, gardening, making jams and jellies (she won many ribbons at the fall fair for her cinnamon buns, jams/jellies and flowers) and belonging to the IODE, UCW (rummage sale in particular), Legion Auxiliary and canvassing. She was very proud of Ivor’s many years of involvement with the Castor Air Cadets and the young men and women who were part of it; some of whom have kept in contact with her after they left Castor. Mom also immensely enjoyed her and Husband Ivor’s trips to Europe for various anniversaries of the end of WW2 which Ivor fought in. If you mentioned Vimy, Dieppe or Normandy, she would recount histories of these places as they had visited them, and Ivor’s memories of where he fought, etc. and would haul out pictures and point out where they had been. Her memory and knowledge of almost anything was incredible. After school, Mom moved to Sylvan Lake and then to North Vancouver. Helen and I were born there in 1944 and 1942 respectively. We later moved to Youbou, BC and then back to Delia in 1952. Mom worked in the Co-Op Store in Delia until the end of June 1953 when we moved to Castor. Both herself and Ivor were employed by Ray Wiart, and later Guy at the Magnet Store for many years. I believe for Mom it was almost 50 years. She remained in Castor until June of 2013 when she moved to Calgary. About a year later she moved to Paragon Place in Stettler and enjoyed her life there until she became ill during this past summer. She was residing at Points West in Stettler at the time of her passing. Some of the highlights of her life were derived when the grandchildren arrived. They were “her boys” and she loved them dearly, taking part in their activities from babies, to school age and into adulthood. She was so proud of all their accomplishments and the girls they chose to marry. She subsequently enjoyed the arrival of each of her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She loved to take the “boys” camping with her or travelling to B.C. or other destinations and quite often the Turner boys were involved in some of the activities. They have some interesting stories to tell. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles hiding the last piece was something she did all the time, Chinese Checkers, especially with Evan, Bridge and Yahtzee. She enjoyed Ivor’s family and especially all the acquired nieces and nephews, many of whom have fond memories of “Auntie Helen”. She was an amazing lady and we all have fond memories of her and those who felt her wrath knew they had it coming. Enjoyed many visits to his home Tyler Neil Pals was born March 6, 1987 in Castor, Ab. at Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital. Tyler came into this world with one of life’s hurdles. He was born with Cerebral Palsy. Tyler was the middle child of Philip and Shelly Pals. Tyler attended Gus Wetter School where he was included in the activities at the school with the help of teacher aides over Pals the years. After Tyler graduated high school, he moved into his new home that Philip and Shelly purchased and renovated into the Group Home, where he lived with Katie and John for almost 11 years. He was well cared for by his group home family. Tyler enjoyed seeing many visitors at his home including the many visits from his sisters and his two nieces. On Dec. 21, 2018 Tyler lost a battle to pneumonia. He is survived by his parents Philip and Shelly Pals, his older sister Stacy and her husband Anthony and nieces Aislyn and Bethany, his younger sister Jill and her husband Jordan and Tyler’s newest niece Kaylee, his grandparents Margo Pals and Dennis and Betty Filipenko and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Tyler was predeceased by his grandpa Francis (Bud) Pals. A funeral service for Tyler Pals was held on Fri. Dec. 28, 2018 at 2 p.m. in the Knox United Church, Castor, Ab. with Reverend Barbara Zimmerman officiating. Tyler was laid to rest in the Columbarium, Castor Municipal Cemetery in Castor, Ab. Helen is survived by daughters Juanita (Cliff) Pruden and Helen (John) Jansen; step son David Bowen; grandsons: Trevor (Becky), Evan (Micky), Owen and Lorne (Bonnie) Blumhagen, Faron (Leanne) Ellis and John (Tracy) Jansen; Granddaughters: Shawna, Laomey and Dawnese Jansen; Great-Grandchildren: Amber, Ashley (Yani) Jazayeri, Nicole Blumhagen, Ryan Blumhagen, Elyse (Kurt) Lowe, Jenna (Quinton) Bell, Leah Blumhagen (Chance Abbott), Hillary Blumhagen (Elias Buwalda), Hanna Blumhagen and Austin Jansen; great great grandchildren: Emma and Hunter Blumhagen and Brady, Soren and Norah Jazeyeri step grandchildren: Scott (Dena) Pruden and Kim (Brian) Mann; step-great grandchildren Makayla, Cole and Carson Pruden; sisters: Alma Keenan, Geneva (Harvey) Seagrave, Gloria (Keith) Johnson and brothers: Jesse (Elsie) Battle and Wayne (Gina) Battle; brother-in-law Grant Baird and brother and sister-in-law Stan (Alma) Bowen as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is going to be missed but she has left all of us with some terrific memories of a very feisty, independent and ambitious person. Funeral services will be held for Helen on Sat.
