John Helmer Incident Illustration by Chris Riddell I’m trying to write this column when the phone pings, drawing my attention to a news story in the Argus. Armed police have been called to an address in Portland Road, Hove, where someone is throwing ‘items’ out of the window of a flat above Fresh Pizza. A passer-by talks of a smashed plant pot. This is of interest because it’s just down the road from the flower shop where my wife works as a florist. ‘U ok hun?’ I text her. She is OK. In fact the road-closure caused by the incident has produced an uptick in sales: ‘People are coming out of their houses to see what’s going on.’ ‘… Buying flowers being a natural response to disturbances of the peace of course,’ I reply. ‘“Oh my god he’s throwing stuff out of the window … mmm, look at those hyacinths: just what I need to assuage my shock over this troubling street incident …”’ ‘Police still there,’ she texts back – and texts the same three words at half-hourly intervals in response to my requests for updates. ‘A bit of narrative development would be nice.’ ‘I’m trying to work you know.’ I feel this answer a little insensitive in the circumstances. Just yesterday was the last at my own place of work. This morning I am celebrating my blissful release from urgent deadlines by responding to an urgent deadline for this column. The doorbell rings and it’s a taxi driver. “You’re 20?” “No, three.” “Why does it say 20?” He gestures at a hand lettered sign taped to the window. “That was our number in the street advent calendar: 20th of December. All our neighbours do it. The number of the house is three.” I point to the skylight above me where the word THREE is etched in glass. He goes away again, shaking his head. Somehow, I’ve managed to forget just how much staring out of the window is involved in literary production – something you can’t get away with in an office. Over the years I’ve perfected this trick of tapping my fingers lightly on the keys while gazing intently at the screen to disguise these spells of inanition that are a necessary prelude, I like to tell myself, to flashes of writerly inspiration. Now, with no need to dissemble, my features slump into a mask of stupefied vacancy. “Don’t look like that, you’ll scare the dogs,” says Kate, returning home. “A 46-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to kill someone after a seven-hour standoff. He’s in custody. How’s the column going?” “It’s not.” “What’s the theme?” “Good neighbours.” “Any ideas?” “None.” “Don’t worry. Have a cup of tea, walk the dogs: something will come.” ....41....
