Year in Review 2018
Village bears retail loss, pushes on
Submitted by Orland Park
Village Board
Retail News
This past year was challenging
for big box stores
across the nation. Orland
Park was not immune to this,
as the village experienced
the closing of a number of
big-name retailers.
As always, the Orland
Park community rose to the
challenge. First, the Village
proactively worked with
Seritage to redevelop the
Sears location into a new
AMC theater, and additional
entertainment and retail
space.
Later in the year, the community
worked together to
bring Von Maur to Orland
Square. This partnership
included the Village of Orland
Park, School Districts
135 and 230, the Orland Fire
Protection District, the Orland
Park Public Library and
Simon Property Group.
Von Maur’s goal is to be
open for the 2019 holiday
season, and the store will fill
the Carson’s location, while
the Sears redevelopment
should be complete by the
summer of 2020.
Recently, the revamped
Carson’s retailer signed a
lease to fill the vacant Carson’s
home goods store and
is expected to open in the
first quarter of 2019.
Additionally, Orland Park
Place will welcome Hobby
Lobby to its mix of tenants
in 2019.
Finally, Orland Park
Crossing, located across
from the Main Street area,
will welcome Rock & Brews
restaurant.
These are just a few of the
new businesses and developments
choosing to invest in
Orland Park.
Public Safety
The Orland Park Police
Department reports that
crime in the village dropped
17 percent from 2016 to
2017. FBI statistics for all
communities cover eight
categories, and Orland Park
showed significant decreases
in four of them — burglary,
theft, motor vehicle and arson.
The Village’s burglary statistics
for 2017 were the lowest
in 25 years. Additionally,
crime at Orland Square Mall
was down by 29 percent in
2017. While statistics for
2018 are not official, the Village
has experienced an additional
decrease in crime of
more than 10 percent.
Downtown Orland Park
Six companies submitted
proposals on a request for
proposals to complete the
remainder of Downtown Orland
Park. After a thorough
review process, the Village
board selected Structured
Development LLC to complete
the project. The negotiations
for a final agreement
are currently in progress and
expected to be complete in
the first quarter of 2019.
Restaurants
Orland Park continues
to be the location of choice
for many restaurants. Over
the past year, board members
were happy to welcome
the following eateries to the
village: Al Sufara Grill, Cacao,
Chuy’s, City Barbeque,
City Roasters – Chicago,
Freddy’s Frozen Custard &
Steakburgers, McAlister’s
Deli, Miller’s Ale House,
Pita Pita Mediterranean
Grill, Pueblito, Sushi Nova
and The Crepe Escape.
Budget
At its Dec. 3 meeting,
the Board of Trustees voted
unanimously to approve a
budget for the 2019 fiscal
year. The loss of sales tax
revenue in the Village has
been well-covered by the local
media, and we thank village
staff for trimming $1.8
million from the budget by
finding significant operating
improvements and efficiencies.
These reductions also
improved our longer-term
fiscal health through at least
2023.
Awards
The Village was the recipient
of an award of merit
for the Main Street parking
garage design and construction
from the International
Parking Institute. Additionally,
the American Council
of Engineering Companies
of Illinois awarded the village
its 2019 Engineering
Excellence Award for the
LaGrange Road Corridor
Improvements. Orland Park
will be recognized at the
Chicago’s awards program
in the spring.
The Illinois Council of the
American Institute of Architects
named the Orland Park
Village Center to its 200
Great Places List.
The finance department
again received three awards
from the Government Finance
Officers Association,
the Certificate of Achievement
for Excellence in
Financial Reporting, the
Distinguished Budget Presentation
Award and the
Popular Annual Financial
Reporting Award. The
awards recognize governments’
efforts to make information
available to the public
and to encourage process
improvements in the areas of
financial reporting, accounting
and budgeting.
The Orland Park Police
Department was named a
top Illinois law enforcement
agency for traffic safety. Additionally,
the department
won its second Telly Award.
Crime stories largely top 2018 web interests
Bill Jones, Editor
Are the biggest stories of 2018
those that garnered the most reader
interest online or the reporting editors
think was most important to
the town they cover?
The answer, in our opinion, is
both. Any written word is a bit of
a give and take between the people
writing it and those reading it.
So, instead of choosing one approach
or the other as we recap
2018, we decided to give readers
the best of both worlds, with a rundown
of the 10 stories that most
captured the attention of our web
audience in 2018 on this page and
our staff’s look at the biggest story
threads on the adjacent one.
As you will see in the stories
that follow, crime reporting largely
dominated Orland Park’s web interests
in 2018, but we think there
is a lot more to Orland Park. So,
you will find our recaps of Orland
Square’s changes, the lift on the
video gaming ban, the Chefs’ Auction
revival and more across the
way. Then, it’s on to 2019.
Feb. 18: Fire causes ‘major
damage’ to Orland Park restaurant
No one was injured, but a fire
caused “major damage” to Red
Robin, 15503 S. LaGrange Road.
A roof fire originated in the interior
kitchen of the building, which
also was damaged. An evacuation
of customers and employees took
place. And damage to the structure
was estimated to be in excess of
$100,000.
March 23: Police suggest body
found in Orland Park pond the
result of suicide
The preliminary results of an Orland
Park police investigation into
a body found in a pond at 157th
Street and 76th Avenue suggested
the man died of a self-inflicted
gunshot wound. Police recovered
the body of a 25-year-old male Orland
Park resident. Orland Park police
said the weapon was located,
and there was no threat to public
safety.
April 27: Owner of three Orland
Park financial firms sentenced to
12 years in prison
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for
the Northern District of Illinois announced
a 151-month sentence for
Daniel Glick, a 65-year-old advisor,
in a press release. Glick owned
three accounting and financial services
firms in Orland Park and was
sentenced after stealing $5.2 million
from several clients, including
his elderly in-laws.
May 25: Orland Park man charged
with sexual assault of teenage
juvenile
Rodger W. Burke, 55, of 11267
Endicott Court, was charged with
predatory criminal sexual assault,
manufacturing child pornography,
criminal sexual assault and unlawful
grooming, after he allegedly
sexually assaulted a teenage juvenile
inside the man’s Orland Park
residence.
June 24: Police say man shot
woman multiple times before
killing himself outside P.F. Chang’s
A police investigation revealed
a 59-year-old man likely shot a
43-year-old woman “numerous”
times June 24 before shooting
himself in the parking lot of P.F.
Chang’s, 14135 S. LaGrange Road.
Police reportedly arrived to find a
man, later identified as Steven
Shereyk, of Willow Springs and
formerly of Frankfort, lying dead
next to a vehicle from an apparently
self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Inside the vehicle, police found a
woman, later identified as Renee
P. Isadore, of Chicago, dead from
numerous gunshot wounds that
“appear to have been fired by the
male,” according to a press release.
Police said the weapon used was
located.
June 30: Investigation into fencing
ring leads to arrest of two men
from Orland Park
An investigation into a fencing
ring for stolen merchandise led to
“Major damage” was done to the Orland Park Red Robin during a blaze that took place in February.
Photo courtesy of the Orland Fire Protection District
the arrests Jamel Zayyad, 33, of
12561 Anand Brook Drive — who
was charged with wire fraud, possession
of stolen property and continuing
financial crimes enterprise
— and Ahmad Zayyad, 65, of the
Sept. 27: Orland Park Police
investigation leads to ‘clandestine
lab’ in Midlothian
A drug investigation that began
in Orland Park led police to discover
a “clandestine lab” in Midlothian
and the arrest of Jacob Nelson,
26, of the rear unit at 14607
Knox Ave., who was charged with
one count each of possession of
cannabis with intent to deliver, unlawful
manufacture of a controlled
substance-DMT, possession of a
controlled substance-MDMA and
permitting the unlawful use of a
building (for manufacturing). A
search of the residence led to a “felony
amount” of cannabis weighing
“nearly a pound,” a “small quantity
of Ecstasy (MDMA) and “numerous”
items of drug paraphernalia,
such as scales and packaging
equipment, along with cash proceeds,
police said. Police also reportedly
found in a bedroom of the
home a “clandestine lab” in which
suspected DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine,
a Schedule I controlled
substance) was in “various stages
of manufacture and production.”
Oct. 18: Fleeing Orland Park
carjacker hit construction worker,
police officer while taking another
vehicle in Oak Forest
Police were searching for a man
who allegedly took a woman’s car
at gunpoint in the parking lot of an
Orland Park restaurant and fled the
scene, and then struck a construction
worker and a police officer
while taking another vehicle in
Oak Forest. The man approached a
woman around 11:58 a.m. Oct. 18
in the lot in the 7800 block of 159th
Street, after she exited a 2016
Dodge Charger, displayed a handgun,
demanded a purse and the
keys to the vehicle, entered the vehicle
and fled the scene eastbound
on 159th Street, according to police.
The vehicle reportedly hit a
construction worker at the intersection
of 159th Street and Cicero
Avenue in Oak Forest, and then the
man committed second carjacking
and struck a police officer with the
vehicle, police said.
The story threads that dominated
the 2018 news for Orland Park
Bill Jones, Editor
Many of the big things that impact
a town cannot be captured in
one-and-done stories. They develop
over time. As discussions swell,
coverage follows the action, and
even resolution of an issue does
not necessarily mean the end of an
important story.
Looking back at 2018, Orland
Park had several stories that
spanned the better part of the year.
And reporting on these stories
would not have been possible without
the tireless work of freelance
reporters such as Jon DePaolis,
Meredith Dobes, Amanda Del
Buono and Jonathan Samples, as
well as Assistant Editors Amanda
Villiger and Megan Schuller, along
with Publisher Joe Coughlin.
As we looked back through their
work from 2018, five major story
threads emerged. Without further
ado ...
Referendums trend toward antivideo
gaming, officials lift ban
On Jan. 4, we reported from the
last meeting of December 2017 a
petition by Orland Park residents to
put an advisory question pertaining
to video gaming in the village on
the March 20 Gubernatorial Primary
Election ballot. Village officials
adopted an ordinance putting their
own question on the ballot.
The residents’ petition asked
voters the question, “Shall the Village
of Orland Park prohibit video
gaming within the corporate limits
of the village?” while the Village’s
ultimately asked if it should “approve
and license video gaming
within the Village with certain conditions.”
Three video gaming town halls
took place, and on March 20, in
both referendums, more Orland
Park voters opposed video gaming
than those who proved in favor of
it.
But the argument over whether
or not to allow it in Orland Park did
not end there. On May 7, officials
raised the issue once again, and on
Aug. 6, the Village video gaming
ban was lifted (with restrictions) by
a 4-3 vote.
Mall loses big-name retailers, gets
plans for new ones
On Jan. 4, Sears announced
it planned to shutter its Orland
Square store in April as part of its
holding company’s latest round of
closures. A previously announced
renovation plan to add an AMC
Theatre on the upper level was not
significantly impacted by the closure,
according to Seritage Growth
Properties.
On Feb. 19, the Village Board
approved a number of plans and a
special use permit for the project
amid outstanding questions, as well
as safety concerns raised about the
addition of a movie theater.
On April 18, Bon-Ton announced
the shuttering of Carson’s
at Orland Square, dealing the Village
another blow to its sales tax
revenue.
In October, taxing bodies in the
area — Village of Orland Park,
Orland Fire Protection District,
Orland Park Public Library, Consolidated
High School District 230
and Orland School D135 — agreed
to abate portions of their property
taxes for a set period or amount in
an intergovernmental agreement
designed to help fill a vacant space
at the mall.
On Oct. 15, the Village voted to
approve its end of the agreement,
and announced Von Maur was set
to move into the Carson’s space.
Chefs’ Auction taken off the
chopping block
After the Village of Orland Park
announced it would be canceling
its annual Chefs’ Auction, an area
favorite fundraiser, beneficiary The
Bridge Teen Center announced it
would be taking over operations
and scheduled it for March 8 at
Silver Lake Country Club, a new
location.
Silver Lake donated the space,
and numerous restaurants offered
food to attendees. With a live auction,
silent auction, music and
more, the event sold out in advance.
And the live auction packages
alone brought The Bridge
more than $68,000, shattering the
event’s $50,000 goal.
It is to return in 2019.
McGrath retires amid investigation,
accusations but thus far avoids
charges
New Lenox police announced
charges would not be filed related
to an investigation into alleged inappropriate
content on a cellphone
used by the Rev. Richard J. Mc-
Grath, former president of Providence
Catholic High School, after
he refused to surrender the phone
multiple times and then his lawyer,
Patrick Reardon, told police at the
end of 2017 the phone “no longer
exists” and searching for it would
be a “huge waste of time.”
A female student reportedly saw
“what she believed to be a photo of
a nude 13-year-old male” on Mc-
Grath’s phone during a December
2017 wrestling meet at the school.
McGrath retired amid the allegations.
Then, on April 12, Jeff Anderson
& Associates and Frost Pearlman
filed a lawsuit on behalf of their client,
Bob Krankvich, 36, alleging he
was sexually abused by McGrath,
and that Providence and the Order
of St. Augustine knew of the abuse
and shielded the former president.
In September, it was reported
that McGrath was residing at the
St. John Stone Friary in Hyde Park,
390 feet from the St. Thomas the
Apostle grade school and near a
day care center. Anne Maselli, the
Archdiocese of Chicago’s director
of communications and marketing,
said the organization knew of
McGrath’s move to the friary but
members were unaware of the seriousness
of the allegations against
the Augustinians he must be moved
elsewhere immediately.
Support for discontinued Pace Diala-Ride
forces new service
After word gets out that Village
officials planned to discontinue the
Pace Dial-a-Ride service offered
within Orland Park over budget
constraints, residents reached out
to The Orland Park Prairie to
share their stories of the impact
the discontinuance would have on
their lives.
Residents followed that opening
salvo by turning up Nov. 5 for
the regular meeting of the Village
Board, sharing their stories once
again and asking officials for better
solutions. Officials said they were
working to place residents in other
programs.
Dial-a-Ride users kept up the
pressure in late November at another
Village Board meeting, and
some trustees said they were looking
into alternatives to the service.
On Dec. 3, Village officials
voted to fund a new program, to be
known as the Community Vehicle
Program.
Odd and ends
people have asked me how
I like Sandburg and specifically
the thing I like most
about being principal. My
answer is always that I love
Sandburg, and that it is an
elite place. When I share
what I like most about Sandburg,
my answer is always
the people. I have thoroughly
enjoyed beginning to
Orland Fire saves more
lives, earns Class 1 status
Michael Schofield
Orland Fire Chief
Your chances of surviving
a heart attack — cardiac arrest
— in the region served
by the Orland Fire Protection
District are better than
in most other regions in the
country.
This achievement has
been recognized nationally
and was the focus of a recent
Survivors Dinner the district
hosted in November. At the
Survivors Dinner, we commemorated
the outstanding
work and professionalism of
our paramedics and Emergency
Medical Services first
responders in saving lives.
We also honored survivors
whose lives were saved by
the efforts of these emergency
professionals.
During the dinner, officials
from the University
of Illinois acknowledged
that the district’s 65 percent
“save rate” is far higher than
the less than 10 percent survival
rate that is the average
across the United States.
Speakers Dr. Pavitra Kotini-
Shah, assistant professor at
the University of Illinois,
and UIC Heart Rescue Community
Outreach Coordinator
at UIC Daisy Zamora
pointed out that the average
national survival rate is only
1 out of 10 individuals who
have cardiac arrest. Data
shows that in the Orland Fire
Protection District, our “survival
rate” is nearly 7 out of
10.
As a result of that achievement,
the Orland Fire Protection
District is the recipient
of the International Center
for Public Safety Excellence
and Commission on Fire Accreditation
International, the
highest honor of International
Accreditation Status.
The Orland Fire Protection
District is one of only
260 international agencies to
achieve this significant rating
of International Accredited
status with the CFAI
and CPSE. It is one of only
69 departments nationally to
achieve ISO Class 1 status.
Accreditation affirms
that the Orland Fire Protection
District’s safety and
emergency response duties
are performed using industry
best practices and at the
highest possible professional
standards. The OFPD received
the International Accreditation
award on Aug. 28.
The achievement demonstrates
that our district firefighters
have a proven commitment
not only to provide
the highest quality of service
to our community but also to
save lives. And they are succeeding.
Residents in the Orland
Fire Protection District can
be assured that they will
receive the highest quality
emergency safety response
and fire protection that is
possible.
One reason for this success
is the intense training
and experience our paramedics
and firefighters bring
to the community. Another
reason for this success is
that we dispatch nine paramedics
to emergency situations,
such as cardiac arrest.
That is the highest number
of dispatched personnel of
any other fire district. Another
important factor is the
training we provide to citizens.
It is proven that when
a citizen has CPR and emergency
training, they play a
significant role in doubling
the chances of survival for a
cardiac arrest patient.
I want to credit the hard
work of the district’s legal
team, headed by attorney
James J. Roche, and also the
work initiated in 2002 by
former Orland Chief Robert
Buhs and EMS Administrator
Lt. Mark Duke. Our
fire department continues
to receive strong support
from our Board of Trustees,
including Board President
Chris Evoy, and board members
John Brudnak, Jayne
Schirmacher, James Hickey
and Craig Schmidt. Their
leadership ensures that our
resources are exploited to
produce the maximum results
for the citizens of our
district.
The Orland Fire Protection
District hosts many
training programs for our
residents, too, including the
CERT (Community Emergency
Response Training)
program, programs for seniors
through the Senior
Advisory Council (SAC),
and programs for our young
people. Make sure to check
out our website at www.Or
landFire.org or “like” our
page on Facebook for more
details on these and other
programs.
Public service name of the
game for Orland Township
Paul O’Grady
Township Supervisor
The coming of the new
year is a time for Orland
Township to prepare for new
heights in our public service,
while taking stock of all we
have accomplished together
over the last year.
I believe that health and
fitness are essential ingredients
to improved quality of
life, and that senior citizens
in the community should
have more opportunities to
gather and socialize. When
my own parents grew older,
I observed the challenges
many elderly people face,
especially those who may
not have family members
nearby, in gaining access to
transportation and other critical
services. Now, as Township
supervisor, I’m committed
to enhancing supports
for seniors and filling in the
gaps in places they may require
extra assistance.
Particularly with the local
senior population growing,
the Township has strived to
be innovative in its approach.
We offer classes to promote
exercise and wellness. And
we produce a series of live
performance events — such
as Senior American Idol,
Dancing with the Senior
Stars, and Senior Dating
Game — to showcase the
capabilities of local seniors,
while encouraging them to
have fun and remain active.
These events help unite the
local community, while raising
funds to encourage aspiring
youth through the Orland
Township Scholarship Foundation.
For local families and
their four-legged friends,
we also host our popular
Pet-Palooza event each year,
while providing other health
services, such as the Drive
Thru Flu Shot Clinic in the
fall. During the Township’s
2018 Holiday Program, we
collected and distributed
food, new toys and clothes
to friends and neighbors in
need. Thanks to generous
contributions from residents,
local schools, churches and
businesses, more area families
indeed felt the warmth
of holiday cheer.
We have boosted investment
in children and youth,
while improving recreational
opportunities for area residents.
We help unemployed
citizens get back to work by
hosting resume-writing and
interviewing workshops and
job fairs. We operate a food
pantry with a companion pet
pantry to fight hunger. And
we manage recycling events,
so residents can dispose of
unwanted electronics in a
way that protects the environment
and shred sensitive
documents to help prevent
identity theft.
The Township is fortunate
to have a talented staff
and exceptionally dedicated
group of volunteers who in
2018 helped produce a range
of initiatives to better support
the community — all
while doing our part to hold
the line on local property
taxes.
We’re your Township, and
we’re working for you.
District 135 thankful for support,
dedication of Orland community
DJ Skogsberg
Orland School D135 Superintendent
Happy new year from Orland
School District 135!
As we reflect on 2018, we
are thankful for the support
and dedication of the Orland
community as we continue
to transition our grading and
reporting system this school
year.
In 2016, in a committee to
which all were invited, D135
parents, teachers and staff
identified that the District’s
system of grading and reporting
was missing key components
and shared values for
communicating student progress.
The District’s learning
community expressed their
belief that a system of grading
and reporting should
include communicating information
about strengths/
weaknesses, so students/
teachers/parents understand
student progress, assessing
the mastery of skills and
standards within a subject
matter, providing feedback
and to show growth, mastery
or lack thereof, identifying
skills mastered and
skills that continue to need
work.
Culminating a multi-year
process, D135 has implemented
standards-based
grading. SBG is a set of
teaching and reporting practices
that communicate how a
student is performing against
standards ,instead of combining
and averaging scores as
in traditional systems.
The District’s implementation
has included more
than two years of work. Between
2016 and 2018, prior
to its implementation, the
District gathered feedback
from parents, teachers and
students on grading scales,
rubrics, and the standards on
the report cards.
The District also gathered
input from other districts,
as well as high schools that
have implemented this type
of grading system. As the
District developed components
of this system, communication
with all stakeholders
was shared via email
blasts, parent and staff informational
nights, national education
speakers, newspaper
articles, board meeting updates,
and an informational
page on our District website.
As we work together
through the first year of
SBG, we continue to gather
feedback from our entire
community of learners to
understand how to improve
and refine the process for
the future. District leaders
are continuing to work with
groups of teachers from
all curricular areas to seek
feedback that will guide future
practices. The overall
goal is to improve curriculum,
instruction and assessment,
while staying current
with best educational
practices from research,
diverse learning styles and
equity.
D135 continues to improve
by also serving as an
instructional technology
leader. Our staff incorporates
innovative technology into
the classroom each day.
As of fall 2018, four of our
schools have been recognized
as Apple Distinguished
Schools, which, according
to the Apple Distinguished
Schools Program 2018 Handbook,
“Apple Distinguished
Schools are centers of innovation,
leadership, and educational
excellence that use
Apple products to inspire
creativity, collaboration and
critical thinking. They showcase
innovative uses of technology
in learning, teaching
and the school environment,
and have documented results
of academic accomplishment.”
We are proud of Century,
High Point, Liberty and
Meadow Ridge for achieving
this recognition, and
look forward to supporting
our other eligible schools
in their journey to obtaining
this status.
There have been and will
continue to be challenges as
the Orland community grows
and changes. With new housing
developments in progress
and more young families
moving into the area, we
anticipate a growing student
population with unique
learning needs. We will come
together with our community
of learners to ensure every
student in D135 has supports
in place so that they each can
achieve success.
We look forward to the
community’s continued support
as we face these challenges
together over the next
several years.
We are eager to continue
our partnership with you,
our stakeholders, as we venture
into 2019 and beyond
with open minds and student
success at the forefront of
our decision-making.

From the Editor
Just say no to nostalgia
BILL JONES
bill@opprairie.com
The day after Christmas,
in the midst of
putting together this
2018 Year in Review, I sat at
a big table inside of a local
pub with the biggest group
of old friends from junior
high I have seen in one
place in quite some time.
A couple of old friends
organized it, and the
evening was a wonderful
experience. I had not talked
with a few people there in
more than a decade. Others
still I see only here or
there. And while some have
stayed connected online
(one of the few useful things
about social media), it is a
different thing entirely to
chat in person for the first
time in years.
Many are married. Some
have children. I learned
about what they do for a living
nowadays, where they
moved, how they acquired
dogs, dating woes and so
much more. And I shared
a few stories about myself
from over the years.
It’s hard not to feel a bit
nostalgic when you’re in
a situation like that. You
remember how things were.
You think about a group
once tight-knit and how it
naturally drifted apart. You
remember the (relatively)
carefree days of your youth.
And it speaks to the strength
of a bond that it can be so
easy to fall back in, if only
for a night, with the same
group of people.
Similarly, we do these
retrospective issues annually,
because there is
just something about them
people enjoy. In less than a
year, you might have forgotten
about huge stories that
happened in your hometown.
Ranked lists over any
given stretch of time are
fun to debate. You revisit
some tales you loved. You
remember decisions you
hated. You gain context and
perspective with the time
that has passed.
But there is also a danger
inherent to nostalgia. It’s
a drug, of sorts. As we all
inevitably get further and
further away from youth,
the feeling of it is one
of those things that gets
tougher to recreate with the
same dose. And so, we find
ways to chase it.
And when we get that
feeling we enjoy about
the “good old days,” our
brains tend to leave out the
bad stuff that went with it.
When we remember the
great times we had with
early friends — long for
it again — in the same
thought we are doing a disservice
to the people around
us who make our lives
enjoyable today.
When we revisit old
news, we gloss over some
of the darker details. We’ve
already compressed, in our
text and in our brains, stories
of struggles and death
into bullet points and singleparagraph
summaries.
History is important. It
shaped the current day and
who we have become. It
helps us to avoid repeating
mistakes (sometimes). It
can be important in an everlasting
search for meaning.
But when we have wives
and children we love, jobs
we’re passionate about, pets
we care for, lives we have
gone on to live, to revel too
long in the days of old does
little for the now.
We have new stories to
write. New journeys of our
own to make. Part of what
makes us alive is that we
keep moving. Time hurtles
ever forward. And if we’re
constantly looking backward,
we’re missing the
present and are bound to get
clocked by what we didn’t
see coming ahead of us.
Fittingly, as I wrap up this
issue, the words of a gypsy
king by the name of Eugene
Hutz have been ringing
through my head the most.
There was never any good old
days
They are today, they are tomorrow
It’s a stupid thing we say
Cursing tomorrow with sorrow
and service. Service is not
treated as an obligation but a
valued choice,” said the Rev.
John Merkelis, the school’s
first-year president.
The school works to continually
improve itself and
unveiled a new mission
statement in July for the
school. The revised statement
will help guide the
school’s administration,
while making strategic decisions,
and it will be used
to gauge the success of the
school’s long-range goals
and strategies. The mission
statement communicates the
purpose of the school and
invites all involved with the
school to become something
greater, together.
The school officially
opened its $6 million, 21,800
square-feet student commons
and cafeteria this fall.
The state-of-the-art facility
provides a safe, welcoming
central space for all students
to gather before, during
and after school hours.
It also incorporates a large
modern kitchen, food court,
concession space, a spacious
roundabout pick-up/drop-off
area, and serves as the athletic
competitions entry for
students and their families.
The space can serve more
than 500 students at a time,
was an excellent addition,
while hosting many of
the events for the school’s
100th Anniversary Celebration,
Dedication, Mass and
Alumni Homecoming.
“This is truly a year to
celebrate, we will continue
to thrive in this location by
making a difference in the
lives of all we come in contact
with,” said Ed Barrett,
director of advancement.
A ceremony took place
to dedicate the newly built
commons, along with a Mass
and other festivities for students,
alumni and families.
Providence Catholic also
announced the opening of
the school’s STEM Academy
in fall of 2019. The
STEM Academy will complement
the school’s highly
successful Honors and AP
Programs. It seeks to attract
a different type of learner,
other than the traditional
honors student.
“The program will be
geared toward those students
who are inquisitive and active
learners wishing to
identify and solve authentic
problems,” Principal John
Harper explained.
Students will be active
and engaged as they work
collaboratively and independently
to explore various
STEM topics and real-life
scenarios.
“The STEM Academy
includes traditional college
prep classes in biology,
chemistry, physics, Algebra
2, geometry, precalculus, engineering
and design, computer
science and computer
programming. In addition,
the STEM program will also
include classes in robotics,
Java, Python and other
programming languages,
web design, statistics, trigonometry,
environmental science,
ecology and more,”
said Mike Stenoish, Science
Department chairman
at Providence. “The course
topics are the same as in the
traditional classes, but in the
STEM Academy, students
will be investigating and designing
solutions. They will
develop higher-order thinking
skills.”
Rachel Ellingson, director
of Student Enrollment, added,
“Our excellent college
prep curriculum will now be
able to offer even more to
our students. We are excited
to add the STEM Academy
to our programs of study.
STEM will teach our students
how to effectively collaborate
in teams and how
to apply learning to real-life
scenarios. It will provide our
student with communication
and presentation skills that
are necessary today for both
college and careers.”
opprairie.com
The recipes for
success in 2018
A look at some of
the cool things that
made 2018’s Dishes
special, fun, more
Bill Jones, Editor
Restaurants pride themselves
on secret ingredients.
They can’t tell you the exact
mix of spices that make
those baby back ribs taste so
good. They might assure you
a sauce isn’t going to trigger
any allergies, but good luck
getting the recipe. And they
sure as heck won’t explain
the techniques handed down
from generation to generation.
But figuring out what
makes a restaurant tick
doesn’t have to be such a
mystery. Sometimes, businesses
wear what makes
them special on their sleeves
— figuratively and literally.
So, in 2018, we took a look
back at some of the not-sosecret
ingredients of area
restaurants that caught our attention
for The Dish. The list
that follows is far from comprehensive,
but it highlights
some of the best.
Because if we told you everything,
we’d have to...you
know.
All about the “guts”
Bob Peplowski, of New
Lenox, son of Peppo’s founder
Jim Peplowski, has no
way to hide what has made
the family’s sandwich shop
a popular stop in Palos Hills.
Their sandwiches overflow
with “guts” — a mixture of
diced pickles, tomato and onion,
with herbs and spices, as
well as a homemade vinegar
and oil dressing — that now
come in five variations.
There is a small secret
we shared with readers earlier
this year, though: the offmenu
“boss guts” are a mixture
of all of the varieties put
together.
Less (sugar) is more
Many bakeries assume if
you’re game for a sweet treat,
you’re all in. You want the
sweetest cupcakes. You want
a sugary frosting topping
them. And maybe some extra
candy sprinkled in the mix.
But Orland Park’s Créme
by Sarah Ashley bucks that
trend with items low in sugar,
offering cake pops and more
that aren’t quite as sweet, but
still quite a treat.
Secretly loaded with college
nostalgia, not-so-secretly
loaded baked potatoes
When McAlister’s Deli
opened in Orland Park in
2018, its love for loading
baked potatoes was hard to
miss. A variety of options on
the menu are highlighted by
the Spud Max, a giant baked
potato stuffed with ham,
turkey, bacon, cheddar-jack
cheese, green onion, black
olive and sour cream that acts
as a meal unto itself.
What helped get people
in the doors, though, was a
huge helping of college-town
memories. The franchise has
locations in close proximity to
campuses at Illinois State and
the University of Illinois, and
co-owner Ravi Patel first discovered
the chain at his alma
mater, Purdue University.
The “smoke” created by Tasty Chill’s Dragon Breath is a mixture of either cereal balls or cheese balls and liquid nitrogen.
Macarons with a homecooked
touch
Many find happiness in a
meal that reminds them of
something mom cooked at
home when they were children.
And some restaurants
even jump through elaborate
hoops in frivolous attempts
to replicate something that
comes close.
Mokena resident Kim
Friedl did it by just staying
home. She simply started
making macarons with her
children. And once the New
Lenox native mastered it, she
turned it into The Macaron
Shoppe, petitioning the Mokena
Village Board to pass
an ordinance that would accommodate
her work and
creating cookies that would
be difficult for anyone else’s
mom to replicate.
Hot dogs give birth to pizza
Who would have guessed
that inside of an Orland Park
hot dog stand there was a
pizza joint waiting to blossom?
But that’s exactly what
happened this year, as Joey’s
Red Hots took over the space
next-door to open a pizza
shop alongside its already
immensely popular restaurant.
Now, we’re looking at
other businesses and wondering
what secret ambitions
they might be hiding, like
they’re all some late 1990s
high school drama.
Not so much what goes into
the food as what comes out
of it
People go to Chicago
Dough Co. in New Lenox
for the pizza. They go for the
buffet. They go for the pictures
on the wall.
But Chicago Dough Co.
does all of that not just for the
business but for the charitable
opportunities, as well. Since it
opened in 2007, the business
has donated free food to fundraisers,
events, and people
and families experiencing
hardships. Knowing your
money helps support those efforts
is just another reason to
feel good about dining there.
When in doubt, liquid
nitrogen
There are dessert shops
aplenty in the area, but Tasty
Chill’s 19-year-old entrepreneur
Abdullah Mubarik knew
Chicago Dough New Lenox owner Tim Waters (left) and chef
Ernesto Lopez prepare a pizza for the daily lunch buffet.
if he wanted to capture a market
of both children and adults
in Orland Park, he needed to
have some fun with things.
Enter the Dragon Breath,
which comes in two varieties:
with cheese balls or with
chilled, fruit-flavored cereal.
This selection lets customers
exhale “smoke” while the
chilled, fruit-flavored cereal
or cheese balls are in their
mouths. The effect comes
from the liquid nitrogen that
freezes the bite-sized balls to
an extremely low temperature.
Love for country and beer
At Ease Craft Beer Pub
displays its military pride
everywhere — in the name,
on the wood-crafted American
flag hanging on a military-green
painted wall,
and with tap handles made
in the shape of .22-caliber
rounds. Owner Nick Roppo
served seven years in the
Army, and he hopes the pub
— which now serves food,
as well — can be a place
for veterans and anyone
else looking for a stress-free
space.

both seventh and eighth
grade teams are conference
and tournament champions.
All of us worked so hard
from the first game until the
championship and we were
all so excited to win everything.
Are there any
embarrassing moments
you had in sports?
Last year during a basketball
tournament one of my
shoelaces broke and fell off.
Luckily I had an extra shoe
in my bag, but it was white.
So, I had to finish the tournament
wearing one white shoe
and one lime green shoe.
Do you have a hero, or
someone you look up
to?
I look up to my sister, Jordan,
because she is always
so supportive of me and
helps me whenever I need it,
even though she is extremely
busy.
Is there something
people don’t know
about you?
Most people don’t know
that I wear No. 43 for basketball,
because that was my
dad’s [Scott’s] number when
he played.
Is there a movie you
could watch over and
over without getting
bored with it?
I would watch “Elf,” because
it’s funny and I laugh
every time I watch it.
How about a TV show
that you could watch
over and over?
I could watch “Friday
Night Lights’ over and over,
because there are so many
shocking moments and it
never gets boring.
Any superstitions?
JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY
MEDIA
Ever since we lost to Oak
Lawn in the regular season, I
have worn a different headband
and we have won every
game since.
If you could have dinner
with anyone — living
or dead — who would
it be with?
I’d want to have dinner
with both of my grandpas,
because I was really close
with one of them before he
passed away and my other
grandpa passed away when I
was very young.
If they made a movie
about your life, who
should play you?
Probably Jennifer Lawrence,
because I loved
watching her as Katniss in
“Hunger Games.”
What would that movie
be called?
“The Life of Juliana”.
AREA SPORTS ROUNDUP
Eagles gymnasts to host fourth Olmsted Invitational
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Sandburg will host a 10-team
gymnastics event at 10 a.m. on
Saturday, Jan. 5 and aside from
bringing in some strong gymnastics
talent, the fourth running of
the Erin Olmsted Memorial Gymnastics
Invitational will also do
some good for the community.
Proceeds from the event will go
to the Erin E. Olmsted Scholarship
Fund. Olmsted was a senior
at Sandburg and was an athlete
on the gymnastics team when she
was killed at age 17 by a drunk
driver in March, 1997.
The Olmsted family raised
$140,000 in scholarship money in
the past two decades and donated
$120,000 to the Alliance Against
Intoxicated Motorists.
Sandburg won the first Olmsted
event in 2016 and Lincoln-Way’s
coop team won the past two seasons.
Underclassmen did well last
year as Lincoln-Way’s Korina Jarosz
was first with a 37.125 while
Sandburg’s Maddie Giglio was
second with a 36.550 and teammate
Taylor Talley was fourth
with a 34.500.
Sectional sites set
Sandburg’s gymnastics team
will be involved in the Hinsdale
South Sectional on Feb. 5.
Regional sites will not be announced
until Wednesday, Jan. 9.
Other teams in the sectional
include SouthWest Suburban
Conference squads Andrew,
Homewood-Flossmoor and the
Lincoln-Way coop.
Big wrestling recovery
After a razor-thin 31-30 loss to
Lockport (ranked in the top five
in the state in Class 3A by two
services at the time) on Dec. 21,
the Eagles recovered nicely with
a 33-22 victory over Glenbard
North, which was ranked 10th in
the state in the Dec. 25 rankings
by the Illinois Wrestling Coaches
and Officials Association. The Eagles
were ranked 12th in the state
by the same organization.
They also came back the next
day and beat Libertyville, Schaumburg
and Maine South by a
combined score of 166-44.
Stuursma makes all-tourney team
Chicago Christian’s Matt
Stuursma was named to the All-
Tournament team at Kankakee.
The Orland Park native helped
his team win just the fourth
Christmas tournament in school
history.
All-state volleyball stars
The Champaign News-Gazette
named its All-State squad in volleyball
on Dec. 26 and Orland
Park native Katie Mather, a setter
at two-time Class 4A state champion
Marist heading to Loyola,
was named to the18-member first
team.
Sandburg’s Rachel Krasowski,
a junior libero who has committed
to DePaul, was named to the
second team.
Football signings
Orland Park’s Mike Markett
signed a letter-of-intent to play
football at Drake University. Markett
was named the East Suburban
Catholic Conference’s last Offensive
Player of the Year. The
league will merge with the Chicago
Catholic League in a yet-tobe-named
conference.
Another Orland Park standout,
Brother Rice receiver David
O’Keeffe, will attend Harvard and
play football at the Ivy League
school. He helped the Crusaders
reach the Illinois High School Association
Class 8A state championship
game in the fall.
Sandburg’s girls gymnastics team will host a 10-team meet on Saturday, Jan. 5, which will help the Erin
Olmsted Memorial Scholarship Fund and AIMM. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Sandburg coach Nick Fotopoulos and his Eagles went 9-6 through
guarantee the third-year coach his best record at the helm.
JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
GIRLS BASKETBALL
A strong 2018 could help give
Fotopoulos his best record
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
The 2018 portion of Sandburg’s
schedule is over and the Eagles finished
9-6 after placing in the top
eight in the 16-team Hillcrest Holiday
Tournament.
One of the biggest losses however,
didn’t come in the win-loss column.
It came on Nov. 29 when the Eagles
were playing some of their best basketball
against a quality opponent –
Lincoln-Way West. Senior scoring
and assist leader Natalie Stavropoulos
suffered a season-ending knee
injury.
Sandburg coach Nick Fotopoulos
insisted that his team would be
able to find a way to still have some
success even with the huge blow of
losing Stavropoulos.
Back-to-back losses to Stagg (46-
31) and Argo (70-48) didn’t bode
well for the Eagles but a four-game
winning streak gave the team a shot
in the arm.
“We’re definitely a team that has
to grind it out sometimes,” Fotopoulos
said. “We’re able to piece things
together and everyone is working together.
It’s been a collective effort.”
With nine wins already in the
books, there is a good chance the
Eagles will earn their best record in
the three-season Fotopoulos era. In
2016-17, he finished with an 11-20
mark in his rookie campaign. Last
season, the Eagles were 11-18.
Looking to 2019
The 2019 opener promises to not
be easy as the Eagles play powerful
Bolingbrook on the road on Thursday,
Jan. 3. Sandburg had just two
home games during the 2018 part of
the schedule and will enjoy staying
home for back-to-back games with
Lincoln-Way East on Tuesday, Jan.
8 and Lockport on Thursday, Jan.
10.
Most of the 2019 schedule is filled
with SouthWest Suburban Conference
Blue opponents but the Eagles
will squeeze in a few non-conference
games, visiting Schaumburg
Jan. 12, hosting Oak Lawn on Jan.
26 and hosting Joliet Catholic Academy
Feb. 7 to close the regular season.
Only three games at Hillcrest
Most of the 16 teams in the Hillcrest
tournament played four games.
But as a result of Sandburg winning
its first game (dominating
Thornton Fractional South, 52-18)
and losing its second (a 58-52 overtime
thriller to Rich South) in a
doubleheader on Dec. 22, the Eagles
were placed in a four-team bracket to
try to finish in fifth place. The winner
went on to play another game.
The loser was done at three games.
The Eagles were upended by
Thornton, 49-46, on Dec. 26 and had
their tournament end.

Even the players knew the
first half of Sandburg’s effort
against Naperville North
in the opening game of the
32-team Jack Tosh Holiday
Classic was substandard.
“Everyone was kinda
tired,” Atharva Atreya said.
“Early game, day after
Christmas.”
Coach Todd Allen didn’t
need to hear the reasons.
He wanted to see his team
get better. The Eagles woke
up and won three straight
games to make an appearance
in the consolation
championship game against
St. Patrick, which took place
Monday, Dec. 31.
Losing to Naperville
North 45-42 on Dec. 26
dropped Sandburg into the
consolation bracket, and at
a 32-team tournament, that
meant rising early. But the
Eagles remained awake and
won their next three games,
with a 56-45 victory over
McHenry in a 10 a.m. second-round
game, then edged
Lake Forest, 49-47, the following
day to move into
the consolation semifinals,
where they beat Timothy
Christian, 57-51.
The Eagles led McHenry
by 15 at halftime and coasted
via 17 points from Marvin
Agwomoh and 13 from
Kevin Agwomoh, shooting
56.7 percent from the field
and outrebounding McHenry
21-14.
Lake Forest was pesky,
but the Eagles won 49-47 on
the strength of four Kevin
Agwomoh free-throws in
the final 13 seconds. Sandburg
had been 2-of-6 from
the line before that, but he
was perfect when it mattered
most and dropped the
Scouts. He, Ian Sanders and
Atreya each had 10 points,
while Khaled Salah pulled
down six rebounds.
Against Timothy Christian,
Marvin Agwomoh had
14 points and pulled down
11 rebounds as the Eagles
racked up 31 boards overall.
They entered the consolation
title game with a 9-7 record
and won three games in a
row for the first time since
opening the season 3-0.
Too much scoring juice from
Welch
In the opener, Sandburg
never really got a handle
on Loyola-bound Tom
Welch, the 6-foot-7 center
who poured in 30 points via
three-pointers, dunks, and
everything in between. On
several occasions, including
at the final horn, the Eagles
were a shot away from tying
the game. The effort was
there.
“We were obviously a little
lethargic in the first half,
but I give the guys credit,”
coach Todd Allen said. “We
really battled back, but
couldn’t get over that twopoint
hump. We had some
good inside looks.”
Atreya led Sandburg with
15 points, but couldn’t get a
good look at a tying threepointer
as time expired, the
Huskies defense doing the
job one last time. Sandburg
was 4-of-17 from three-point
range even with Naperville
North using a 3-2 matchup
zone.
Sandburg’s Kevin Agwomoh (left) is about to congratulate
teammate Atharva Atreya after Atreya was fouled after
a basket late in a 48-46 victory over Lake Forest in the
consolation semifinals of the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic in
Elmhurst on Friday, Dec. 28. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
The big matchup
It was Welch against Marvin
Agwomoh, which meant
the Sandburg senior gave up
four inches in height on the
chart. Welch is quick for a
big man and opened with a
three-pointer that announced
he’d be all over the court offensively.
“If he’s making pull-up
threes on us, there’s not a lot
you can do about that,” Allen
said.
“One of the hardest guys
I’ve had to guard, I’m sure,”
Agwomoh said. “I’m a pretty
good defender for my size.
Welch knows how to score.”
“The thing that made
him so deadly is he does
a little bit of everything,”
Atreya said of Welch. “He
set screens we’re all trying
to get through. It wasn’t just
Marvin on him, it was all
of us.”
Welch was also a soccer
goalies on North’s Class 3A
state championship team.
Next up
Now comes the curious
part of the schedule. Sandburg
plays two games in the
first 20 days of January, on
Tue., Jan. 8 at Bolingbrook,
with a 10-day wait until a
Jan. 18 home contest against
Lockport Township.
“I don’t know how that
happened,” Allen said.
Part of it is the Martin
Luther King Jr. holiday,
to which many non-conference
games have been
shifted. The Eagles play
five games in an eight-day
stretch beginning Jan. 21
at Chicago Christian. Four
of them are non-conference
games.

1. Coyne’s monster year
Sandburg graduate Kendall
Coyne was a vital member
of the United States
women’s hockey gold medal
winning Olympic team in
February.
If it stopped right there, it
would be unlikely any other
story in 2018 could top that.
But Coyne’s year kept getting
bigger.
She attended numerous
events and homecomings
that honored her, including
one at Sandburg in March.
She was married to NFL
player and Orland Park native
Michael Schofield in the
summer. She appeared on
the “American Ninja Warrior”
show shortly after that.
In the 144-person Chicago
Pro Hockey League, which
included NHL players, she
was the only woman on a
2. Ballad of thin men
Dylan Jacobs, who said
he was named after singer/
won an individual and state
championship in track on
May 26.
He won the 1,600-meter
run by a step over Granite
City’s Andrew O’Keefe in
a classic race that saw Jacobs
make up huge real estate
in the final 200 meters.
O’Keefe raised his arms at
the end of the race as if he
won, but Jacobs won by
8/100ths of a second.
Jacobs, Connor Devlin,
Nico Calderon and Peter
Demogerontas ran a blazing
7 minutes, 45.12 seconds to
win Sandburg’s third state
championship in the 3,200
seventh straight year the Eagles
took a Top 4 spot in the
event and the team almost
didn’t qualify, as it finished
11th in the preliminaries the
day before.
3. McCormick impresses the
Orland Park’s Matt Mc-
great local athletic accomplishments in 2018
in recent years that did not
reach the final four in Class
4A, but the 2018 version
broke through and made an
appearance at Joliet Route
66 Field.
Despite dropping games
to Plainfield North and Lake
Park in Joliet, the Eagles had
one of their better seasons
in history and finished 28-
8, which included being the
first public school to win the
Do It Stevie’s Way tournament
in May.
To get to the state semifinals,
the Eagles triumphed
with a 3-0 win over
O’Fallon, which was ranked
No. 1 in the state at the time
by Prep Baseball Report.
6. Gurgone offensive on
defense
Orland Park native Matt
Gurgone, a senior football
player at St. Norbert, had
five defensive touchdowns
for the Division III power.
He had three interceptions
returned for touchdowns and
two fumble recoveries that
found him in the end zone
with the ball.
Two scores came within
less than a minute of game
time in the second quarter of
what turned out to be a 91-0
win over Grinnell on Sept.
22.
He also had a pair of
scores in a 31-7 win over
Trine in the first round of the
NCAA Division III playoffs
on Nov. 17.
7. Century sweep
Century’s seventh- and
eighth-grade girls basketball
teams won the regular-season
championships, as well
as the postseason tournaments
in the Southwest Interscholastic
Conference for
the first time in school history.
The conference started
in 1975.
The only other school to
win all four trophies in a season
was Palos South, which
accomplished it four times.
Palos’s eighth-grade team
did everything in its power
to prevent Century from doing
that with a huge comeback,
but the Wildcats won,
55-54. Josie Canellis had 34
points, Claire Callaghan had
17 and Camden McElligott
had a bank shot for what
turned out to be the winning
points.
8. Red-hot Crowe
Despite a rough go at
it in sectional play, which
prevented him from going
THURSDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK
downstate three years in a
row, Sandburg junior bowler
Cameron Crowe had a twoweek
stretch in which he
was one of the hottest bowlers
in the state.
In a 12-game stretch at the
SouthWest Suburban Conference
Blue tournament and
Sandburg Regional, he averaged
a 254.
His 1,529 in regional play
was No. 1 in the state that
day with Morgan Park’s
Clinton Lyons’ 1,469 second.
Crowe’s low score on
the day was 234 and his high
was 278.
9. Slager King of DIII
tacklers
Orland Park native Ryan
Slager finished his career
at Grinnell (Iowa)
College with 605 tackles,
which is the most in the history
of NCAA Division III
football.
The Stagg graduate
beat the previous mark of
545 by Luther College’s
Kyle McGivney from 2008-
2011.
He finished tied for second
among all NCAA tacklers
with Tyke Kozeal of
Division II school Nebraska-
Kearney.
10. Teammates duke it out
on extra hole
Ties for the top spots in
high school regional golf
meets are not the norm, but
they are also not rare.
What is rare is when two
teammates tie for the top spot
and have to go to a playoff.
That happened with Sandburg
junior Max Farley and
senior Matt James, as they
both fired 71 scores on Oct.
2 at the Sandburg Regional
at Silver Lake Country Club
in Orland Park.
Farley won the regional
— his first — on the opening
playoffs hole.
E-mail about Q and Colin was favorite moment of 2018
Jeff Vorva
j.vorva@22ndcm.com
While a lot of
people in the
news/sports biz
are thinking about their top
stories from 2018, I have
also been thinking about
my top sports moment from
2018.
It’s a second or two out
of the 31,536,000 during
the year that really made me
feel great.
It’s a second or two out of
the 31,536,000 during the
year that makes me feel like
what we are doing here is
important.
It’s a second or two out of
the 31,536,000 during the
year that I won’t forget —
even if I get forgetful.
My top sports moment in
doing sports for The Orland
Park Prairie didn’t come
watching something inspiring
on or off the field.
It was actually doing a
mundane activity — opening
an e-mail on my phone.
It was at about 4:50 p.m.
on July 28. It was only 193
words. But they were pretty
cool words.
A few weeks before that,
we ran a feature on Sandburg
Special Olympian Colin
Lewis for winning a state
weightlifting championship.
We also named him our Athlete
of the Week. One of the
questions we asked him was,
“If you could have dinner
with anyone — living or dead
— who would it be with?”
Lewis, who also plays
hockey, said “Definitely
[Blackhawks] coach Joel
Quenneville. I could give
him some pointers on how
to help the Blackhawks.”
So, I was not expecting to
get an e-mail from Colin’s
mother, Kim, saying that
coach Q saw the article and
asked Colin to have lunch
with him at Ditka’s restaurant
in Oak Brook.
If I had to list some of the
coolest moments I have had
in this business, that ranks
right up there near the top.
So, the Lewis clan and the
Quennevilles met on July 31
and broke bread for roughly
2 hours and 15 minutes.
Colin had pasta. The
coach had a French dip.
“Colin’s Q&A showed
that he is clearly a big
Chicago Blackhawks fan,”
Quenneville said. “I’m
honored he thought of me
as the person he’d most like
to share a meal with, and
we had a lot of fun at lunch.
It was great to learn more
about all of his accomplishments
through Special
Olympics Illinois and Chicago
Blackhawks Special
Hockey, and I wanted to
make sure he knew that the
entire Blackhawks organization
is very proud of him.”
Colin was a little intimidated,
so he didn’t have any
bold suggestions for the
coach on how to help the
team. In retrospect, maybe
Colin’s suggestions could
have helped, because Coach
Q was fired on Nov. 6.
Having a small part in
getting Lewis and Quenneville
together is a source
victory. JEFF VORVA/22ND
of personal pride and is
a source of pride for this
newspaper and company.
There were 10 words in
Kim Lewis’s e-mail that
made me beam: “This one
will be a big moment in
Colin’s life.”
This is one of the reasons
we are doing this. This is
one of the reasons we are in
the business.
