relationship to the landscape they
are in than on the direct meaning
of the carvings. As well as looking
at their past use, it also explores
possible future use, looking at our
relationship with them now, asking
how can we value and use this rock art
today? Therefore, this project is also
concerned with raising awareness
and protection of them. Completed
data, including photography and 3D
imaging, will be publicly accessible via
the projects website.
Kirkcudbright has a small, friendly
team who regularly go out and survey
cup and ring marked rocks in the local
area. There are a great many to cover
in the 5 years of this project, which
aims to visit and record consistently
as many of these carved rocks as
possible.
We may never know the true reason
or meaning of these carvings, but
more knowledge will give us a better
understanding of their significance to
people in the past, and it is not hard
to admire the skill and creativity of
these artists who will remain forever
anonymous.
