THE GREEN HANDBOOK
A National Park
in Galloway?
by Tim Jones
Proposals are underway for
Galloway to become Scotland’s
next national park and the
public have an opportunity now to
take part in the discussion.
Back in December last year, after
the previous edition of the Green
Handbook had gone to print, Su and
I drove out over the snowy roads to
the Galloway Activity Centre at Loch
Ken for an event held by the Galloway
National Park Association who are
putting together a bold and exciting
plan.
Headed by Dame Barbara Kelly and
supported by the President of the
Scottish Campaign for National Parks,
Sir Alex Fergusson, they launched a
Discussion Document outlining their
desire to create a National Park across
a large area of South West Scotland.
Creating a National Park in the region
has been under discussion since as far
back as 1945 and Galloway NPA are
now putting forward the 21st century
case for one. There are a number
of proposed locations within the
discussion paper, but it is possible
that, if it goes ahead, it could include
an area from Caerlaverock and
Nithsdale to the Ayrshire coastline.
At the December meeting, after the
contents of the paper were outlined,
members of the audience asked
questions and while there was a deal
of support, some concerns were raised
too. Mostly relating to worries about
planning permission, industries and
forestry businesses. Meanwhile, other
voices were more positive.
The paper, which can be obtained
from the GNPA website, explores the
possible size and shape of a Galloway
National Park and its expected benefits
for the local economy. It also outlines
the technicalities of such designations
and their implications, legal, funding
and otherwise. Comparisons with the
“from Caerlaverock
and Nithsdale to
the Ayrshire coastline”
nearby Lake District National Park are
not thought to be particularly helpful
because of differences in the law and
our very different landscape, tourism
infrastructure and visitor numbers.
Other than providing a boost for
tourism related businesses, one
of the likely benefits should be in
employment. A National Park is not
expected to be controlled from the
Central Belt. It would likely have a
local headquarters in one of the small
towns managing a workforce carrying
out duties similar to other Scottish
Parks which are currently absent or
looked after by other agencies like the
council.
In addition, ‘National Park’ is a widely
recognised brand across the world.
This should give many businesses,
such as those in the food and drinks
sector, a significant marketing
4
THE GREEN HANDBOOK
FOUR POSSIBLE BOUNDARIES FOR THE PARK
Option A: The ‘Heartland’ area in blue.
Option B: As option A plus the coastal fringes from the Machars around the Rhins to Ayrshire
Option C: Option B plus the whole of the Rhins and the Wigtownshire Moors
Option D: Option C plus the area around Girvan to south of Ayr
opportunity. The increased profile
of the area is also expected to help
attract and retain people like doctors,
teachers and new businesses not
necessarily linked to tourism.
The aim of the discussion document,
available from the Galloway NPA
website, is to raise awareness and
encourage community engagement
with the idea. Between February and
May, the GNPA is out and about,
travelling across Galloway and
South and East Ayrshire to meet
with Community Councils and
local organisations. At these public
meetings, the GNPA is showing a
20-minute presentation followed by a
Q and A session. They can be reached
via social media and their website.
Their details are below.
You can take a look at their discussion
document and let them know your
views, they are running membership
and donation schemes.

Allanton
World Peace Sanctuary
20th Anniversary
by Glenda Thornton
It’s hard to believe that it is 20
years since Allanton Sanctuary
opened its doors in this wonderful
part of South West Scotland. Looking
back, we can see just how far we have
come during that time!
From finding our feet in the early
years, to now when we have so many
people come to visit us from the local
community and also from around
the world. Some come for just a day
and some for a couple of weeks. For

Allanton the past 20 years has been an
amazing journey!
So – who are we and what have we
been doing in the past 20 years??
Our story begins in Japan, just after the
Second World War. Poet, philosopher
and teacher Masahisa Goi believed
that humanity should work towards
‘peace’ in our world. He was inspired
to create the prayer/affirmation ‘May
Peace Prevail on Earth’ and everything
that we do at Allanton helps to spread
this message. We work on a grassroots
level, locally, nationally and internationally
and recognise that everything
that we think, say and do makes a
difference to ourselves, others and our
world.
Here are some of our highlights:
• We now make Peace Poles on-site!
For a long time we were importing
the Peace Poles from Japan!
• In 2004 we held two Flag
Ceremonies with His Holiness the
Dalai Lama – one in Dunfermline
with 400 school children holding
the flags and many schools

attending; and also one on the same
day at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh.
• In 2005 we helped to organise a
‘Positive Education’ conference at
the Pollock Halls in Edinburgh, also
with his Holiness.
• Our staff has expanded over the
years and we now have 4 full time,
6 part time and some amazing
volunteers.
• We now have a residential capacity of
34! Year by year we have continually
upgraded Allanton and are grateful
to all the groups and individuals who
have enabled us to do this.
• We run Forest School every Friday
morning in term time.
• In 2012 we co-organised an event
in Oldham with 1000 teachers and
children from 24 schools.
• We have written our own Education
programme for teachers:
‘Peace Prevails’
www.peaceprevails.education.
• Since 2017 we now have a very
supportive Advisory Board from the
local community.
• Every Wednesday we have a
Volunteers Day.
• This year is our 20th Annual World
Peace Festival. The numbers of those
attending has risen each year and
this year many of our friends and
colleagues will join us from around
the world for this celebration.
• 2016 saw the development of our
Peace Pole Henge. There are 200
Peace Poles, one for every country
of the world, linking the ancient
culture of this land to create a new
culture of peace for the future.
Celebrating our
20th Anniversary
I can think of many more – but too
many to mention in this article!
We will be holding two events this
summer (see adverts on opp. page)
The second ‘Soul of WoMen’
conference on Saturday 23rd June.
This is for Men and Women
‘How can we balance the masculine
and feminine qualities within
ourselves and take them out to our
communities and our world?’
And

An event for the whole family –
celebrating our community and our

Practices for mor experienced students
THE GREEN HANDBOOK
Yoga Nidra
Make it part of your daily life
by Carol Godridge
I
often describe yoga nidra to my
students as both a deep relaxation
for the body and a meditation for
the mind. But it is so much more than
that. It involves entering an altered
state of consciousness - between
wakefulness and dream, sometimes
referred to as a hypnagogic state.
The practice penetrates the depths of
the human mind wherein it takes on
suggestions put to it.
When you practise yoga nidra the
deeper phases of your mind will
open. If done regularly, it can change
“the nature of your mind, diseases
can be cured and your creative
genius restored.” 1 A teacher who
has completed the postgraduate
qualification to teach yoga nidra can
certainly use the practice safely to
work therapeutically with people who
are experiencing pain and illness.
And in ordinary circumstances it is a
wonderful practice to use daily both
for relaxation and boosting energy.
One experienced teacher told me
that unborn babies, whose mothers
have used yoga nidra regularly during
gestation, are very happy babies!
You can also do yoga on your own,
using guided instructions on CDs
1. Yoga Nidra by Swami Satyananda Saraswati,
Bihar Publications Trust, p.17
or Digital Downloads, recorded by
properly qualified teachers.
It is important to be completely
relaxed, and to focus on the voice
giving instructions. The state of
physical relaxation is achieved by
spending time focusing the body,
before letting it go and turning to the
subtler aspects of the practice. It may
take some time if you are unfamiliar
with lying completely still for any
length of time, but gradually the
stillness comes. I recommend starting

THE GREEN HANDBOOK
One of Carol’s Yoga Nidra audio recordings
designed for home practice
with a short practice and building up
to a full length one lasting between
20 – 35 minutes.
Yoga Nidra also makes use of a
sankalpa – a determination to make
some kind of profound change in
your life. As a short, concise, positive
resolve phrased in the present tense,
it is introduced twice during the yoga
nidra, repeated mentally and planted
deeply in the subconscious, when it
is in this state of receptivity. Used
regularly it can indeed create a new
direction for your life. Take your time
finding one. Just put the idea out into
the universe, and in a few weeks, one
will come to you to use, until it comes
true.
I use yoga nidra in all my yoga classes,
and I also craft yoga nidras for
students who come to me to deal with
stress or illness. However, for general
purposes you should find something
to suit you in my CDs and downloads.
There is also one designed specifically
for healing – for those dealing with
pain and illness.
Carol Godridge is a qualified and
registered teacher with Yoga Scotland
and Satyananda Yoga UK, and is qualified
to teach Yoga Nidra. She teaches Yoga,
Meditation and Remedial Yoga at all levels
in Moniaive, Dumfries and Keir.

crafts, interactive displays, quizzes
and demonstrations to help everyone
“learn, enjoy and get involved”.
Our two children got stuck into the

favourite was having a very close look

Local Refugee
Action
The refugee crisis of recent years
is both huge and terrifying and
while it may seem that there
is little we can do to help, one local
organisation has been doing just that;
helping people across the region to
show their generosity of spirit.
Dumfries & Galloway’s humanitarian
movement ‘Massive Outpouring of
Love’ better known as MOOL have
been working hard since September
2015; helping to make life a little
better for those on the refugee road,
and for people in need closer to home.
How you can help
MOOL is always on the look out for
donations of good quality furniture
and household goods, sleeping bags,
waterproofs, warm men’s clothing,
jeans, waterproof shoes and boots
(large child, small and medium adult
sizes are preferred), and financial
donations to send to established
organisations on the ground overseas
who directly help people in crisis.
There are many ways in which you
can volunteer and become part of the
friendly MOOL Crew, no matter how
much time you can commit, or what
physical limitations you may have.
There are sociable sorting and packing
sessions at their depot in Dumfries on
most Monday and Friday mornings; if
you are able to knit scarves or squares,
MOOL can send them overseas to
keep people on the streets warm at
Care4Calais voluteer handing out clothing and
MOOL SNUG Packs in February
night. They need people to organise
fundraisers and to train as befrienders
to help Syrian families who have
been resettled in the area. Also, to
collect items for SNUG Packs, lead
workshops, bring cake, and join them
in acts of kindness and Craftivism
helping to dispel myths surrounding
migration and the refugee crisis.

Health Play
Dance for Children
by Sara Lockwood
Margaret Morris, artist,
choreographer, physiotherapist
and Modern
Dance Pioneer created a movement
technique designed to enhance the
health and well-being and creative
side of people of all ages. In this
article I look specifically at her dance
philosophy for young children.
Margaret Morris Movement Health
Play combines the development of
physical skills through a play format.
With its songs and use of narrative it
has a great appeal to young children
and is a fun way to become healthier.
As well as the physical benefits,
children develop their strategies for
learning and gain greatly from the
co-operation needed to perform in
dances with each other. Creativity
and improvisation, where the child
explores his/her own movement/
mime ideas is a key element of each
session. Children can make wonderful
choreography given the opportunity
and the problem solving skills
developed in creating a dance can be
of great value as they grow in their
own expressive way.
It allows each child to develop in
four key areas; physically, socially,
emotionally and intellectually.
Physical benefits
Breathing & posture - good breathing
and posture are essential to good
health and are at the heart of each
MMM session. Learning how to walk
correctly will help co-ordination and
self-confidence. Skipping, running
and jumping develop stamina, agility
and spring. Balance is important
in developing control and strength.
Children’s overall flexibility will
improve and in contrast they also
learn conscious relaxation.
Social Benefits
Children’s observational skills; their
ability work with others, think for
themselves, appreciate and bring out
the best in each other without being

competitive, are all key factors in
learning how to learn. MMM sessions
allow each child to develop positive
friendships through a creative group
experience.
Intellectual Benefits
Children explore music, rhythms,
narrative, mime and song. It is well
accepted that exploring such elements
improves an individual’s ability to
learn in other areas, for example,
patterns and rhythms in music help
with understanding of number
concept, and learning simple rhymes
and songs help when children start
to read. Children with good posture
tend to have a longer attention span,
which will improve their mental
concentration as they grow older.
Emotional Benefits
A child’s self-esteem can be cultivated
through holding themselves well
and a sense of general well-being
comes from standing well, breathing
correctly and enjoying moving freely.
By discussing and observing each
other dancing out ideas, exploring
and experimenting, a child’s
confidence can be enhanced. Even
very young children are able to create,
perform and appreciate dances. The
importance of Emotional Intelligence
cannot be underestimated and will be
used throughout life.
Free creative opportunities run
through the dance session. The MMM
teacher moves with the children,
inspiring, encouraging, supporting
and developing their ideas. Simple
props are often incorporated into the
narrative or mime and add another

dimension to the movement. Art
and Craft is another element that
is particular to MMM and making
their own props and costumes give
added value to their performance.
Cooling down and reviewing what has
happened in the Health Play session,
combined with relaxation, bring the
class to a conclusion.

Dating, Yoga &
Kinetic Chain Release
by Laurie Blair
Do you know how many men in
Scotland have yoga on their
online dating profile? 2 and I
dated them both! They weren’t for me
and as I was closing my account, up
popped a profile pic of a guy in a karate
suit, doing a yoga pose. 8 months
later, I’ve sold my house and moved
across the country to a quaint, but very
run down cottage in the beautiful hills
above Thornhill.
I’m a yoga teacher and body therapist,
and started yoga classes in the area
about a year and a half ago. I lead a
popular class in Dalswinton Village
Hall on a Thursday evening and will
be starting daytime, evening and
weekend classes in Thornhill.
One class will be ‘Yoga for Wellbeing’,
aimed at stretching/relaxing/easing
back, shoulder and neck pain and

allowing you to get your body, mind
and soul back into balance. The
other class is ‘Yoga Shred’ inspired,
aimed at shredding body fat, raising
cardio capacity, strengthening cores
and building muscles. This is low
impact and suitable for all, as it uses 4
minute HIIT (high-intensity interval
training) techniques, allowing for rest
in between movement. It’s a quicker
class that brings results expected of a
much longer workout.
My other passion, providing Kinetic
Chain Release (KCR) therapy, which
can change the lives of people with
ME, Fibromyalgia, depression and
many other diseases. 90% of us have
one leg longer than the other. This
causes misalignment leading to all
sorts of pain and disease. KCR therapy
aims to fix the leg length. It is a simple,
gentle treatment, with the client being
fully dressed and takes around an
hour. I also offer relaxing Indian Head
Massage for those who just love to be
pampered, or hope to stimulate hair
growth.
This summer, my focus will be on all
of these body balancing techniques, as
my academic work ends. I’m looking
forward to focusing on helping more
people regain alignment, balance,
freedom from pain and to enjoy the
independence this brings. Namaste,
Laurie.

De-Stress with Fly Fishing
by Sue Macniven
I
count myself as a really lucky
person, not just because I have
found a career that I am good
at and enjoy but co-incidentally, it
has turned out to be good for my
mental and physical health too.
I started fly fishing when I was 16 and
living in Perthshire, not because I had
any great desire to fish but because my
boyfriend of the time was mad keen
and it was a matter of join him or not
see him. He later became my husband,
then later still my ex husband, but the
gift of fly fishing that he gave me has
been a constant in my life and I think
literally a life saver when the stress
of divorce, death and injury have
threatened my equilibrium.
In 2003 I decided that perhaps
teaching other people how to fly fish
would be a great job so embarked on
my instructor training. I am now a

As skill and muscle memory improve,
the concentration on the mechanics
reduces and the brainwaves change
so the actions become more automatic
giving the brain time to focus on
other things. It has been likened to
meditation and as a long time TM
practitioner I can attest to that. The
clarity that takes over whilst seeming
to concentrate on a physical activity
has helped me solve and prioritise
many of the problems I have had to
face in life.
“the repetitive nature...

There have been many studies carried
out into the effects of learning new
skills on the brain and health in
general. Fishing has also been shown
to help young offenders to stay out

was given a name!
Many of my clients come to fishing
in their 40’s and 50’s looking for
something relaxing as an antidote to
their high pressured lives. They realise
they have to make time for the sake of
their health.
Not only do they have some exercise
but there is always the chance of
catching dinner.
It is no surprise that there is now
an organisation called Casting for
Recovery. Set up to take breast cancer
sufferers on a fly fishing retreat. They
are taught to cast and the physical
process is designed to help strengthen
tissues damaged during treatment and
to increase the self esteem of ladies at
a traumatic stage of their lives. The
skills learned and friendships made
during the retreats are often carried
on long after recovery.
The peace and tranquillity of a
day spent by water listening to the
buzzards call and letting the stresses
of life just melt away is worth its
weight in gold. Why not give it a go? I
offer residential workshops, and half
and full day sessions.
