Orland Park teens sort Giving
Tree clothing for OPPL drive
Jesse Wright
Freelance Reporter
On Dec. 28, a handful of
young girls worked into the
evening at the Orland Park
Public Library, sorting and
boxing coats, gloves, and
winter hats for the annual
Giving Tree program.
Since early December, the
library had been taking donations
of winter wear, with
plans to distribute the clothing.
It is a tradition older
than most of the volunteers
who worked that Friday evening,
and Erin Faxel, a teen
librarian, said it is an important
local initiative. She said
people depend on the coats.
“We’ve had people who
are part of the community
who don’t have coats asking
about them, and we’ve let
them take one,” Faxel said.
The student volunteers, on
the other hand, are a new addition.
Faxel said in the last
few years, she has made an
effort to recruit volunteers to
help with the project, as lots
of Orland Park teens need
community service hours for
school or for other projects.
Some just do it for a love of
the library.
“I like reading a lot, and I
am in honors language arts,”
said Alena O’Connor, of Orland
Park, who volunteered
with her sister, Maura. Alena
said her love of reading puts
her in the library frequently,
and she met Faxel several
years ago. That is when she
heard about the library’s
Giving Tree program.
“I started doing it in sixth
grade, when I didn’t need
service hours,” she said.
Now in eighth grade, she
needs the hours but admitted
she already had put in 12
hours over the 24 she was required,
because she loves the
library so much.
“I keep doing it because
it’s really fun, and Erin is really
nice,” O’Connor said.
Specifically, O’Connor
said she likes giving back
to the community, and she
recognizes she is among
the fortunate in Orland Park
who does not need the charity,
and so she can give back
and offer her time.
But above all, she said,
she just loves being at the
library.
“I help with the food pantry,
and I’ve helped decorate
tea parties for the kids, and
I helped with a Harry Potter
day,” she explained.
Jackie Kitchen, of Orland
Park, did not sign up; her
mother signed her up. But
while this marked her first
year volunteering for the
Giving Tree, she said she enjoyed
the experience.
“I like it,” she said. “I just
like that we’re giving to Orland
Park. I like giving stuff
to people.”
McGrath ‘absent’ from Augustinians after leaving friary
State’s Attorney says
abuse allegations
case open, without
‘sufficient evidence’
Bill Jones, Editor
First, the Rev. Richard J.
McGrath’s cellphone vanished
amid an investigation
into allegations of inappropriate
content on the device.
Now, McGrath himself has
gone rogue from an Augustinian
Province after being
asked to leave a friary near
a grade school in Hyde Park,
in light of abuse allegations
made against him.
But the Will County
State’s Attorney is saying it
does not have the evidence
needed to file any charges
against the priest.
The Rev. Richie P. Mercado,
of the Augustinian
Midwest Province of Our
Mother of Good Counsel —
which oversees Providence
Catholic High School,
where McGrath formerly
served as president — issued
a statement in December
saying that after the
Archdiocese of Chicago
requested McGrath no longer
reside at St. John Stone
Friary in Hyde Park, “without
permission from the Augustinians,
McGrath did not
move to another Augustinian
residence.”
“Since then, he has been,
as is known under Canon
Law, ‘illegitimately’ absent
from the Augustinian
Province,” according to the
statement. “Therefore, he
is no longer an agent of the
Augustinian Order. At this
time, he remains a priest, but
without the canonical faculties
to function as one.”
The Augustinians said
McGrath was removed from
all public ministry after the
Province became aware of
an allegation of potentially
inappropriate material on
The Rev. Richard J.
McGrath. Photo submitted
his mobile device, though
Providence Catholic in December
2017 announced it
as a retirement amid the allegations.
New Lenox police conducted
an investigation into
alleged images of a naked,
male juvenile seen on his
phone. But that investigation
was closed mid-February
2018 because of a lack of
evidence.
McGrath reportedly refused
multiple times to surrender
the phone to Providence
officials and police.
McGrath’s lawyer at the
time, Patrick Reardon, told
police in December 2017
the phone “no longer exists”
and it would be a “huge
waste of time” to look for
it, according to the police
reports. Without the phone,
police said they could not
file charges.
In April 2018, McGrath
was accused by Bob Krankvich,
36, of repeatedly sexually
abusing him in the mid-
1990s, when Krankvich was
approximately 13-15 years
old. McGrath was assigned
in 2018 to live at St. John
Stone Friary, where the Augustinians
say they worked
to “ensure that he had no
unsupervised access to minors.”
But the friary is 390
feet from the St. Thomas the
Apostle grade school, and
also is near a preschool and
a day care center. The archdiocese
last fall requested
McGrath be moved, and the
Augustinians were tasked
with his relocation.
It was during preparations
for the move the Augustinians
say McGrath moved
to a non-Augustinian residence.
The Augustinians say
they notified the archdiocese
of his absence and have cooperated
with civil authorities
regarding the abuse allegations
against McGrath.
Paula Waters, chief communications
officer for the
archdiocese, said members
of that organization do not
know his current whereabouts.
“We were told he had
been moved from the archdiocese,”
Waters wrote Dec.
28 in an email to The Orland
Park Prairie when asked
what happened after the
archdiocese asked that Mc-
Grath be moved.
Anne Maselli, director of
communications and marketing
for the archdiocese,
directed further questions
to the Augustinian Order.
Maselli previously said the
archdiocese was unaware
of the seriousness of the allegations
against McGrath
when he was living at the
friary because they were not
notified by the Augustinians,
despite a press conference
in which Krankvich detailed
the alleged abuse being covered
by multiple Chicagoarea
news outlets.
McGrath had completed
safe environment training
in response to the allegation
of inappropriate material
on his phone, and therefore
the archdiocese “did not see
the need to notify nearby
schools.” Maselli previously
noted.
Krankvich said he filed
an official report against
McGrath with New Lenox
police in January 2018, not
long after seeing a news report
about McGrath resigning
from Providence amid
the criminal investigation
into the alleged content on
the mobile device.
New Lenox Police Chief
Bob Sterba in April confirmed
Krankvich’s January
report and said his department
concluded a thorough
investigation four weeks
prior and turned the case
over to the State’s Attorney’s
Office. Sterba called
Krankvich “credible” at the
time.
Sterba said his department’s
investigation into
McGrath, related to the allegations
made by Krankvich,
is “done,” pending further
requests from the Will County
State’s Attorney’s Office.
“There has been no change
on our end,” Sterba wrote in
a December email to The
Prairie of McGrath’s recent
move. “His whereabouts [do
not] change anything.”
Carole Cheney, spokesperson
for the Will County
State’s Attorney’s Office,
told The Prairie Dec. 30
the case is “still being reviewed,”
but later clarified
that while the case is
still considered “open” the
State’s Attorney’s Office
“[doesn’t] have sufficient
evidence at this time to bring
about charges.”
Jeff Anderson, one of the
attorneys who filed the civil
lawsuit on behalf of Krankvich,
called McGrath a “longstanding
danger” by phone
in late December. He added
that the Augustinians’ secrecy
is part of the problem,
and called it “alarming” that
McGrath is “on the loose.”
Reardon said Jan. 2 he is
not currently representing
McGrath. He added that he
saw no reason for McGrath
to have legal representation
at the time because there is
no active litigation involving
him.
A motion was filed by the
defendant to dismiss with
prejudice Krankvich’s lawsuit
in November, and there
was a December move to
strike or withdraw it, but
the case was continued for
a case management conference
later that month, according
to Cook County Circuit
Court records.
McGrath started working
for Providence Catholic in
1986. Before that, he was
employed at St. Rita High
School and Monastery in
Chicago.

Utilizing the trusty buddy system
Publisher 22CM to
help readers keep
resolutions with
Healthy Living Expo
Will O’Brien
Freelance Reporter
For the millions of Americans
who make — and break
— New Year’s resolutions to
get healthier, the struggle often
comes down to a lack of
support.
That will not be an issue
at 22nd Century Media’s
Healthy Living Expo, where
nearly 1,000 attendees from
across the southwest suburbs
are expected to take in
a full day of fitness with 67
vendors, seven workout sessions
and eight inspirational
speakers.
The free event, now in its
third year and set for 9 a.m.-
1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at
the Tinley Park Convention
Center, was created with
resolution-makers in mind,
said Heather Warthen, the
publishing company’s chief
events officer.
“The expo really ties in
nicely with New Year’s and
people wanting to shift away
from all the indulgences of
the holiday season,” Warthen
said. “It’s a great way to
hit reset.”
With more vendors than in
years past, the expo will give
attendees the opportunity to
interact with businesses and
organizations representing
the full spectrum of the
healthy-living world — and
then some. Gyms, dietitians,
physical therapists, spas,
health care providers, and
professionals in finance,
fashion, home remodeling,
and travel will all be represented.
Groups conducting
health screenings also will
be on-hand.
The first 300 guests are
to receive free tote bags,
while the first 500 are to get
product samples from KIND
Snacks. Deli meat-maker
Greenridge Farm and Poppilu
Antioxidant Lemonade
also will distribute freebies.
The transfusion nonprofit
Vitalant will lead a blood
drive, and canned food will
be collected for the benefit
for micro-pantries throughout
Will County.
“With our events, we always
like to feature some
ways of giving back,”
Warthen said.
The slate of complimentary,
30-minute workout sessions
kicks off with a cardio
class from Planet Fitness,
the expo’s presenting sponsor,
and keeps rolling from
there. Other options include
a cardio, strength and core
conditioning class by Fit-
4Mom, and dance fitness
from Heart & Sole Dance.
“The first year we did
this, I wasn’t sure if people
would work out, or what the
response would be,” Warthen
said. “But people actually
got really into it, and the
classes are always one of the
biggest draws.”
The Healthy Living Expo,
like all 22nd Century Media
events, is designed as
an opportunity for community
members and business
owners to interact, with both
sides benefitting from the exchange,
Warthen explained.
“It’s an opportunity for
folks to come in and check
out a bunch of things that
can better their lives, and
we’re able to do it at no
charge because of our great
vendors,” she said.
This year’s speakers include
chef Tim Baran of the
Joliet Junior College Culinary
Arts program, dietitian
Kimberly Kramer of UChicago
Medicine and fitness
blogger Lori Wilson. “Biggest
Loser” Season 14 winner
Danni Allen, an annual
expo fixture, will wrap up
the speaking program after
leading a fitness class earlier
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Business grants teen’s wish
Fairy Godmothers are not
the only ones who can grant
wishes.
Mokena’s Pink Slip Boutique,
in partnership with
Make-A-Wish Foundation,
granted a wish for a Bourbonnais
teenager who recently
went into remission
from an aggressive form of
Stage III B Hodgkin lymphoma.
Eighteen-year-old Julianna
Bourassa’s eyes grew
wide in shock as she stepped
into the Pink Slip Boutique
and was told to pick out any
prom dress from the store
to wear to Bradley-Bourbonnais
Community High
School’s prom in May.
“It was magical for her
and for me, too,” her grandmother
Debbie Bourassa
said. ”It was tough to keep it
a secret, with how close we
are, but the look on her face
was worth a million dollars.”
The prom dress was a
wish that only Debbie knew
Julianna wanted, until two
local wish-granters asked
what Julianna wanted for
Christmas. Soon after, a plan
was concocted to surprise
Julianna with the dress of
her dreams.
“That was honestly the
best experience I could
ever have,” Julianna said. “I
haven’t felt happiness like
that in a long time.”
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
‘This transplant will give me
a second chance at life’
More than 3,000 new patients
are added to the kidney
waiting list each month,
according to the National
Kidney Foundation, and an
average 13 people die each
day while waiting for a lifesaving
kidney transplant
from a deceased donor.
Kymberly Harrington,
now 28, was diagnosed in
2003 at the age of 13 with
Crohn’s disease. Little did
she know that diagnosis
would alter the course of her
life.
A year later, during routine
testing, doctors discovered
abnormal liver function,
which turned into primary
sclerosing cholangitis. It was
a chronic, slowly progressing
autoimmune disease
that damages the liver over
time, causing inflammation,
scarring and cirrhosis of the
liver, ultimately resulting in
the need of a liver transplant.
“It was overwhelming,”
Kymberly recalled when she
diagnosed. “Not only was I
battling these two illnesses
but my dad had passed away
from complications with
Crohn’s disease, so I was
very afraid.”
Her mother, Glynda Harrington,
worries about her
high risk of developing cancer
until a donor is found
and a transplant occurs. But
Kymberly remains positive
about her condition by looking
ahead to the goals in life
she wants to accomplish after
recovering from a liver
transplant.
“This transplant will give
me a second chance at life,”
Kymberly said.
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Artist uses old-school style
The calendar might say
2019, but Ted Overcash’s
artwork is straight from the
16th century.
Overcash, a member of
The Artist Guild of Lockport,
primarily does silver
drawings, a practice that
was common in the days of
Leonardo da Vinci prior to
the discovery of graphite as
an artistic material.
“Before graphite, your
master artists — and I’m
sure you’ve seen them when
you look at Leonardo da
Vinci and [Albrecht] Durer
and some of their drawings
— they were drawing with
silver,” Overcash said.
At the age of 35, Overcash,
who has always been
physically active, had surgery
and was not able to exercise,
so he needed a new
hobby.
“I said, ‘Well, what can I
do while I’m healing up?’”
he said. “I started drawing,
and that’s how I got started.”
He gets his inspiration
from the outdoors and has
depicted a wide variety of
creatures, but Overcash is
self-taught and plans to improve
his artistic skills simply
by practicing.
“[It’s] just kind of like onthe-job
training, just drawing
and practicing and hoping
that over a period of time
I can see a slight improvement
in what I’ve done previously,”
he said.
While Overcash sometimes
struggles to figure out
what to paint next, no matter
what he chooses as his subject,
he will continue to look
forward to his favorite part
of the artistic process.
“My favorite part is — if
I’m doing a drawing — that
as I’m finishing I actually
like it,” he said.
Early is on time, late is just tiring
BILL JONES
bill@opprairie.com
Let me make one
thing clear to start
this week’s column: I
don’t care, at all, if you go
to 22nd Century Media’s
Healthy Living Expo (about
which you can find plentiful
information on Page
7) between the hours of 9
a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday,
Jan. 19, at the Tinley Park
Convention Center, 18451
Convention Center Drive.
I spent my New Year’s
Eve eating leftover pizza,
doubling up on the carbs
with breadsticks and cleaning
out (digestively speaking)
some bottles in my
cabinet. So, who am I to
tell you to kick off the new
year on the right foot? (Or
the left one?)
You do you and miss out
on (free) workout sessions,
cooking classes, vendors
and so much more.
All I’m going to say
is: If you decide to take
advantage of the wildly
popular annual event our
parent company, 22nd Century
Media, organizes, you
should probably go early.
And here are five reasons
why.
5 - If you’re early
enough, you get a bag. That
bag is going to be filled
with things. Some of those
are things you’ll want to
keep. Some you may toss;
that’s your prerogative. But
stop pretending you don’t
like to collect free things.
4 - Every stick of deodorant
has a life-expectancy.
It is shortened, sometimes
drastically, by the amount
of work you put into the
day. Feel me? What I’m
saying is that convention
center is going to smell a
lot better at 9 a.m. than it
will at 1 p.m.
3 - The early bird gets the
worm. I’m not really sure
how that relates to this scenario.
Maybe it’s just about
the bags again. Maybe it
doesn’t really apply. You’re
not a bird. But people
sometimes find motivation
in metaphors.
2 - Former Orland Park
Prairie Editor Heather
Warthen will be there, and
she tends to be less cranky
the earlier in the day you
catch her, before the world
conspires to come crashing
1218-506HO
down on her, personally.
That’s just a fact. (She also
said you can take pride in
being one of the first to
donate blood.)
1 - The worst part of
working out isn’t, in fact,
the working out. That can
be fun. Energizing. It is,
by most accounts, “good”
for you. The worst part is
the shower afterward. It’s
like a mini-workout after
your workout. Frankly, I
find it easier to deal with
in the morning than after a
full day of activity. So get
out and learn some things,
work out and shower early,
and then you can get back
to pizza and movies.
Happy New Year.
The Crossing a passing of the torch for Ashburn Baptist Church
Erin Redmond
Freelance Reporter
The Rev. Vernon Lyons
wants to make one thing
clear: He’s not retiring.
After 68 years at the helm
of Orland Park’s Ashburn
Baptist Church as administrative
pastor, Lyons is relinquishing
his title and taking
up a new one as an associate
pastor.
He will hand the reins
over to the Rev. Tommy
Thompson on Jan. 13 during
a special service dubbed
“The Crossing,” which is to
honor the past and look toward
the future. Thompson
said the service will be a celebration
of God’s work over
the past 68 years, as well as
all that’s still to come.
The transition has been
gradual since the church voted
with 99 percent confidence
to approve Thompson as the
new administrative pastor
in 2017. Since then, Lyons
slowly has been offloading
some of his responsibilities
onto his successor.
“There’s an anticipation
swelling; it’s been a
good year,” Thompson said.
“With the transition, we
were very methodical with
it, to make sure the church
had the opportunity to get
used to the adjustment, as
well, especially after [having]
the same family pastor
for 68 years. Jan. 13 is really
a historical day because of
[the transition].”
In those 68 years, Lyons
has been instrumental in
moving the church into the
future — oftentimes long
before the rest of the country
caught up.
While the Civil Rights
Act did not pass until 1964,
Lyons said Ashburn Baptist
has always been a place of
inclusion.
“Our doors were always
open to everybody,” he said.
“We have a diverse congregation.
Other than English,
there are 16 primary languages
in our congregation.”
From its inception in 1951,
18-year-old members of the
church always have had a
vote in the church — a right
they did not have countrywide
until the passing of the
26th Amendment in 1971.
Furthermore, Lyons made
it a point to make the church
handicap accessible in 1960,
which was 30 years before
the Americans with Disabilities
Act made it a requirement
in 1990.
But not everything he has
done as been viewed as politically
correct. Notably,
Lyons held a service for 79
hostages in Iran and was
even arrested for passing out
Bibles in 1960s.
“For 68 years, I have had
responsibility and, consequently,
anything that goes
wrong is my fault,” Lyons
said, and laughed before
adding, “From here on, anything
that goes wrong will
be his fault. That’s the way
it works.”
Lyons sees a lot of himself
in Thompson — and
vice versa. The similarities
between the two, Thompson
said, is one of the reasons he
believes he was sought out
while serving his ministry
near Tampa, Florida.
“I think they were looking
for a person to be able to
take the church forward, and
I think they believed they
found that in me,” Thompson
said. “They asked me
to pray on it and consider it,
and it took several months
for me to warm up to the
idea — or maybe I should
say cool to the idea — but
we love Chicago.
“We’re big-city people, my
wife and I. Tampa is a big
city, too. … After we prayed
on it and took some time, we
knew that this was what God
had planned for us, and we
took that step of faith.”
Thompson said he will
spend most of his first year
as administrative pastor
building relationships with
the congregation, his staff
and the Orland Park community.
His goals moving forward
are simple: expand the
reach and impact of Ashburn
Baptist.
While Lyons will no longer
be the administrative
pastor, he will not be slowing
down anytime soon. He
plans to continue to deliver
services periodically, and
will continue to teach his
two Bible study classes a
week, in addition to visiting
ailing church members in
hospitals and nursing homes,
just to name a few.
“I will have less responsibility
and more work,” Lyons
said. “I’ve been anticipating
this for a year, so it’s
been a transition, so it’s not
abrupt; it’s been incremental.
The word retirement is
not in the Bible. Moses kept
going until he was 120.”
The Crossing is set to start
at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, Jan.
13. Ashburn Baptist is located
at 15401 Wolf Road in
Township’s Holiday Program tries
to instill hope through goodwill
Mary Compton, Freelance Reporter
Firefighters from the Orland Fire
Protection District carried large boxes
of wishes. The line in the hallway
in the Orland Township office was
filled with excited families and seniors.
Dec. 19, it was time to pick up
their long-awaited holiday boxes.
“Orland Township has been doing
this for over 20 years,” said Mary
Hastings, office manager at Orland
Township.
According to the Orland Township
website, the majority of the Holiday
Program recipients are clients of
the Orland Township Food Pantry,
which serves more than 300 families
a month.
“We have some dedicated volunteers
who are here weekly, going beyond
to help us out,” Hastings said.
There were almost 50 volunteers
who helped with toys, carried bags
and encouraged the residents who
walked through the door. One of
the volunteers was Lt. Dave Nagle,
of Orland Fire. He has been volunteering
for the Holiday Program for
more than 20 years.
“Everyone wants to help out during
the holidays” Nagle said. “As
firefighters, we do this every day in
our job. When you see families or
elderly down and out, to be able to
give them what their family deserves
is awesome. We made a choice to
help out others as our mission. It
doesn’t matter if it’s for a medical
need or with a fire; it’s all the same
mission.”
Nagle brought his daughter Ashley,
who recently graduated from
Olivet University. She wanted to join
her father in giving back.
“She’s done a lot for the community,”
Dave said. “For her to come
along is a joy.”
For Ashley, it was an honor to
serve others alongside her father.
“My parents always taught me if
we had enough to give back, we did
it,” Ashley said. “It’s a humbling
Almost 50 volunteers donated their time in December to help families in
need at the annual Orland Township giveaway.
Mary Compton/22nd Century Media
“It’s very challenging, what people are
going through. Today renews their hope
for hope. If you have that little bit of hope
to hang on to, it gets you through a really
rough time.”
Robin Kassis — Orland Township Food Pantry coordinator, on
the Holiday Program giveaway day
experience to walk around and hear
their stories. It’s not hard to spend a
couple of hours to help people. This
costs me nothing, and it means everything.”
Orland Township Trustee Antonio
Rubino prepared hams and turkeys
for the giveaway.
“I walk the neighborhoods of Tinley
Park, Orland Hills and Orland
Park,” Rubino said. “There is a need.
When I first got here, the food pantry
was serving about 150 families.
Now, we’re up to 300 families that
we’re helping through the food pantry.”
His family’s business, Rubino’s in
Tinley Park, donates the bags for the
Holiday Program.
“Today means a lot,” Rubino said.
“It shows the community can come
together and make a difference.”
It was the first time volunteering
for Kelly O’Brien, of Orland Park. A
Mother McAuley graduate, O’Brien
always has been involved in serving
organizations such as Catholic
Charities.
“Every year, I try and give back
where I can,” O’Brien said. “It really
is an opportunity to be of service to
give back to get involved and help
in my new community. It’s so important
for people to realize, even
in affluent communities, there are
needs.”
Contributions of food, toys, clothing
and personal items were dropped
off at the Township office, starting in
the first few months of 2018.
“We got a lot of overstock after the
holidays last year, explained Lindsay
Trost, administrative assistant for
Orland Township. “Our food pantry
is a 365-day operation, so we’re always
looking for donations — monetary
and food. We take toy donations
throughout the year.”
Helping to plan the Holiday Program
is Robin Kassis, who has been
the Orland Township Food Pantry
coordinator for three years.
“This is a big endeavor,” Kassis
said. “It takes the whole community
to be involved to make it happen.
We match up families with gifts and
fulfill their lists. Whatever we can
do to make their holidays easier.
There is a lot of hardship going on.
“As residents come through the
monthly food pantry, I hear stories.
There are a lot of crisis and
sad things that people are going
through, such as disabilities, children
with cancer; it’s not only job
loss. We also have seniors living on
very low income. We also have parents
working minimum wage jobs,
trying to hold it together. We have
several parents who have lost young
adult children.
“These are people with real issues
going through real struggles. I
wanted to make sure everyone was
included in the Holiday Program.”
As the line went down and rooms
of donations cleared out, Kassis said
she was happy.
“It’s very challenging, what people
are going through,” Kassis said.
“Today renews their hope for hope.
If you have that little bit of hope to
hang on to, it gets you through a really
rough time.”
The food pantry, 14807 S. Ravinia
Avenue in Orland Park, always needs
donations of canned goods and paper
products. For more information
or to donate, contact the Township at
Year in Review 2018
OPPL celebrates being one
of Illinois’ 200 Great Places
Submitted by Orland Park
Public Library
The Orland Park Public
Library’s most memorable
2018 accomplishment was
being named one of Illinois’
200 Great Places by the Illinois
Council of the American
Institute of Architects in honor
of the state’s Bicentennial.
The Board of Library
Trustees and staff are very
proud to have built a facility
of beauty and function. The
building lends itself to host
some wonderful programs
because of its design.
Staff hosted some incredible
concerts throughout the
year, in both the lobby and
under the outside canopy. The
acoustics provide our entertainers
with the best possible
sound. Music to tap your toes
to was offered every month,
and featured Latin jazz and
salsa; folk songs; an American
troubadour sharing original
compositions reminiscent
of Sam Cooke; and a favorite
of many, Barbershop music.
“Reid Spears Performs Billy
Joel and Elton John” sparked
a standing ovation from the
crowd of over 150 in our
lobby. The Summer Concert
Series featured The Ava Logan
Quintet performing jazz
and The Stingers, whose
blend of classic and roots
rock had a nice mix of rockin’
blues, among other musical
talents. Every month, the library
hosts Meet the Artist, a
showcase of artwork created
by some enormously talented
people.
Our Information Technology
Department set new
highs with attendance at such
new program offerings as
“Figuring out Fake News,”
“Cable No More” and learning
about Cloud storage.
New programs assisting job
seekers and holiday buying
guide on the Internet also
were well received. Look
for more small business program
offerings in 2019. The
library started a new sewing
series, which was made possible
by the donation of six
brand new sewing machines
from Sew Vac Direct. Our
sewing instruction classes
were so popular that an open
sewing session will be offered
in January.
Along with programs
covering the history of such
topics as women in the All
American Baseball League,
Winston Churchill, the Holocaust,
Polish genealogy,
and the birth of murder and
mayhem in motion pictures,
the library offered informative
programs on the opioid
situation presented by the
Orland Park Police Department,
English conversations
for ESL learners, understanding
gender identity, and gardening
and home repair programs.
OPPL CON, a celebration
of pop culture, has become a
favorite for the third year in a
row. The 501st Legion: Midwest
Garrison, an international
all-volunteer organization
brought together our favorite
space villain cosplayers to
assist in our superhero and
lightsaber training. Mr. D’s
Magic Show entertained hundreds
of eager readers for the
Summer Reading Challenge
Kick-off, which had almost
two thousand participants.
Our annual Great Worm
Race in July had children
cajoling the creatures across
finish lines. Story times
were offered almost every
day throughout the year.
Our December Holly Jolly
Story Times were offered
over three days in December,
and more than 500 children
and parents came to see
Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.
Teen volunteers were busy
all year, hosting Pet Supply
Drives, our annual Food
Pantry Drive for Orland
Township and our very successful
Giving Tree event,
which provides new warm
clothing for the needy.
Popular this year were the
Escape Room programs for
children and teens. Solving
puzzles and riddles to unlock
the doors to freedom are all
the craze. Video game programs,
bilingual story times
and crafts, family bingo,
chess, and photography instruction
for the youngest
were just some of the many
offerings throughout the year.
And, of course, there are
books, eBooks, DVDs, Blu-
Rays and more for the checking
out. Librarians have made
it their priority to purchase
duplicate titles in all formats
to lessen the wait time for the
newest releases. Our efforts
have been rewarded, in that
our circulation increased 4
percent from last year thanks
to the incredible support of
all of our patrons.
Look for a new database
featuring our Library Archival
documents, highlighting
our long history, next year
when the library debuts our
redesigned website. And
2019 will bring more repurposing
and updating of
spaces for our patrons both
upstairs and downstairs.
Patrons were kind enough
to share their ideas and suggestions
through surveys and
display boards this fall to
give the Library Board and
staff guidance to make the
library a truly welcoming
community space. Thank you
to our wonderful patrons.
Year in Review 2018
Bridge shares some lesser-publicized
accomplishments from the past year
Priscilla Steinmetz
The Bridge Teen Center founder
There are lots of stats that
we can share that would
demonstrate The Bridge
Teen Center and The Bridge
Thrift Store’s growth and
success in 2018. But there
are some things we’re very
proud of that occurred in
2018 that most people probably
don’t even know about.
We are grateful for this opportunity
to share some of
those things with you.
This year, I was honored
to continue building a relationship
with the Sandburg
High School varsity cheerleaders
in a life-coaching
role for the team. This
fiercely dedicated group of
young athletes has given me
as much as I’ve given them.
They personify hard work,
commitment, teamwork and
the importance of the team
bond. This is a new type of
relationship for The Bridge,
and I could not be more
proud of our relationship.
The truth is, I struggled
academically in high school.
This year, I learned that it’s
never too late. The Bridge
Teen Center was chosen
by the students at Andrew
High School as an honorary
inductee into the National
Honor Society. For us, because
we were chosen by
the students, this is one of
the highest honors we’ve
ever received. Plus, now
everyone affiliated with The
Bridge can tell their friends
they’re in the NHS!
We cannot recap 2018
without mentioning the
unexpected and amazing
growth of the Chefs’ Auction
event at Silver Lake
Country Club. We remain
extremely grateful to the
Village of Orland Park for
passing the torch for this
event to The Bridge. We
especially were touched to
see so many familiar faces
(from previous years) at this
year’s event. The generosity
in the room was aweinspiring,
with more than
$149,000 raised in support
of our students.
Speaking of our students,
we reached a statistical
milestone this year that is
definitely worth celebrating:
7,000 different students in
eight years. It’s amazing to
think about that quantity of
students passing through our
front doors in such a short
period of time. This year
also brought about some
great new program-related
additions and opportunities
for thousands of local teens.
Some highlights include the
following.
• The expansion of our Art
Studio to include an interactive
art wall. This space is
used daily by students, including
Friday nights, when
the studio is highly favored
by students over video
games.
• The growth of our
“Thriftastic” job-readiness
programming and community
service opportunities in
partnership with The Bridge
Thrift Store. Hundreds of
students are bringing more
meaning to their service
hours and learning valuable
business and leadership
skills in committed roles.
• The addition of a soonto-be-completed
Repurposing
Workshop, where
students will learn how to
reinvent and reuse items that
will be sold to benefit The
Bridge’s free programs.
The Bridge Thrift Store
also continues to be an incredible
blessing to our
organization, with record
donation drop-offs and
very brisk sales. The crossgenerational
volunteering
that occurs at the store on
a daily basis is something
I absolutely love. Seeing
teens, adults and seniors
serving on the same team
is truly special. If you are
looking for a place to serve
locally, I would strongly
encourage you to fill out a
volunteer application at
www.thebridgeteencenter.
org. We sure could use your
help.
Almost a decade ago, as
my husband and I were conceptualizing
The Bridge, we
chose Orland Park as our
home, because we felt as
though the community was
poised to embrace a local
nonprofit that served local
families. I’m proud to say
that we weren’t wrong —
and we are continually humbled
by the outpouring of
support from foundations,
businesses and individuals
in and around Orland Park.
We are truly built by the
community, for the community
— and we want to thank
everyone for embracing our
mission in such a profound
way.
For the students we serve
who you will likely never
meet, thank you for investing
in The Bridge Teen Center.

Year in Review 2018
St. Mike’s celebrates another
year of faith and education
Paul Smith
St. Michael principal
St. Michael School was
blessed with faith-filled
priests, a resolute faculty,
a dedicated student body,
generous volunteers and a
lot of cheerful support from
parents during 2018.
We began our year with
excitement in a new opportunity,
when the State of
Illinois passed a tax credit
scholarship for students attending
Catholic schools.
Through the generosity
of our parishioners, eight
students were eligible to
receive scholarships for
2018-2019. New and current
families can apply for
the 2019-2020 scholarships
in January.
Visit www.saintmike.org
for details.
In June, our parish recognized
the accomplishments
of the Rev. Paul Burak,
who retired after 40 years.
In July, we welcomed our
new pastor, the Rev. Frank
Kurucz, whose welcoming
personality and humor have
been a wonderful addition
to our school and parish.
As the days of summer
came to an end, our students
and teachers were filled with
anticipation and excitement
for the new school year. Preschool
through third-grade
implemented the Daily Five
literacy program, which
encourages independence,
engagement and structure
within our reading and math
programs.
Writing continued to
be an academic focus for
our faculty, who integrate
real-world writing projects
at all grade levels. And
our Resource Team supported
students in need of
additional instructional supports
to encourage academic
growth.
This school year also
brought many opportunities
for students to grow
in their faith. All religion
classes began Year 4 of our
Virtues Program, through
which students learn about
a new virtue each month
and discuss its importance
in their lives. Students who
went above and beyond in
demonstrating the virtue
to others were recognized.
Our students also participated
in Service Days organized
by parent volunteers.
During this time, students
completed large-scale projects
for a variety of community
organizations, providing
supplies, letters and
hand-made crafts.
Our students involved in
extracurricular activities
were very busy this year, as
well. More than 70 junior
high students worked tirelessly
to perform “Peter Pan
Jr.” for the student body,
family and friends. The Student
Ambassadors promoted
positive interactions among
students of all grade levels
and shared anti-bullying
messages, while Student
Council organized opportunities
for the children of St.
Michael to help members of
the community in need.
Our varsity cheerleaders
qualified for state again this
year, in addition to our varsity
and junior varsity football
teams, which competed
in the Southside Catholic
Conference Championships.
The Junior High Academic
Bowl and FLL Robotics
teams had a successful and
fun-filled year of competitions,
and this year brought
us an all-female Video Club
news team to broadcast to
the student body.
Continuing in the spirit
of celebration found within
the school, there were
many events for our school
families to enjoy outside
of school. The Trivia Night
committee continued the
long-standing competition
in February, and in the fall
we welcomed the community
to enjoy the beautiful
weather during our annual
Fall Fest. With a number of
food vendors, an expanded
selection of children’s rides
and a great assortment of
live entertainment, a great
time was had by all. Save
the date for this year, when
our festivities kick off again
on Sept. 12.
The School Advisory
Board also hosted a Comedy
Night in October, and Pat
McGann and his Comedy
Crew performed to a packed
house.
We ended the year with
our continued commitment
to serve others. We collected
donations for families in
need, continued our partnership
with the Ray Vanco
Foundation to collect toys
for hospitalized children
and prepared for the birth of
Jesus Christ.
We will continue to focus
on knowledge, faith,
hope and guidance in 2019.
Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year!
Year in Review 2018
CJB proud to repeat honor
Meg Kulpinski
Cardinal Bernardin School Marketing
Coordinator
As the 2018-19 school
year began, Cardinal Joseph
Bernardin School was announced
as a National Blue
Ribbon High Performing
School of Excellence — one
of seven schools in the Archdiocese
of Chicago and one
of 49 across the nation to receive
this prestigious award.
This is the second time
CJB has been named a Blue
Ribbon School.
The honor of achieving
Blue Ribbon designation
status reinforces the academic
excellence and quality
Catholic education CJB
provides students and their
families. This Blue Ribbon
Award is an entire school
community endeavor. Without
the commitment and
dedication of our pastors,
teachers, staff, administration
and CJB families, we
could not aspire to and maintain
such a prestigious level
of academic success.
Our year has been busy,
while students, staff and
families share their time, talent
and treasure within the
community. In July, some of
our students and staff volunteered
at the 50th anniversary
of the Special Olympics,
where CJB is now recognized
as a “Hero” on the memorial
at Soldier Field.
We hosted our annual
golf outing, and our Family
School Association provided
opportunities for our families
to get together and celebrate
the CJB community.
We’ve enjoyed Restaurant
Nights, attended weekly Liturgies,
and celebrated Veterans
Day with many veterans,
who shared stories and celebrated
Mass with us.
We were honored to present
Bremen VFW Post 2791
with a check of the proceeds
from an Out of Uniform Day.
We hosted anti-bullying assemblies,
collected almost
two tons of food during our
Thanksgiving Food Drive,
No Earnest Money Required When Purchasing A
K. Hovnanian® Homes Quick Move-In Home In Chicagoland
K. Hovnanian® Homes is celebrating the start of 2019 by
making it easier for new buyers to purchase one of its homes
in Chicagoland. For a limited time, the builder is requiring no
deposit and no earnest money on Quick Move-In Homes that
close by April 26, 2019. Restrictions apply; see a sales consultant
for complete details.
“When possible, we look for ways to remove barriers to
homeownership,” said Andy Konovodoff, president of K.
Hovnanian® Developments of Illinois, Inc. “By requiring no
earnest money, we’re hoping to speed up the buying process
for those who may be putting off making a move as they save
for a deposit.”
He added that there have been some concerns about fluctuations
in interest rates recently.
“Most lenders will lock in a mortgage rate for 30 to 60 days,”
he explained. “So someone buying a Quick Move-In Home now
shouldn’t have to worry about rates ticking up before they move.”
Currently, K. Hovnanian® Homes has Quick Move-In Homes
ready for delivery in as soon as 30 to 60 days in the following areas:
• Plano: single family homes from the lower $200s
• Sycamore: single family homes from the mid $200s
• Oswego: single family homes from the lower $300s
• Manhattan: single family homes from the lower $300s
• Naperville: attached villas from the upper $300s
• Libertyville: luxury townhomes from the upper $400s
• Naperville: single family homes from the mid $600s
• Chicago’s Sauganash neighborhood: single family homes
from the lower $800
All prices are subject to change without notice, and home
shoppers can find more information about these Quick Move-In
Homes at www.khov.com/chicago.
“One of the many benefits of purchasing a Quick Move-In
Home is that buyers do not have to wait the longer cycle that
comes with building from the ground up,” said Konovodoff. “Yet,
they receive all the benefits of new construction.”
These benefits include fresh floor plans laid out for the way people
live in their homes today, modern building techniques that result
in energy-efficient construction, and brand-new everything—
flooring, appliances, fixtures, and interior appointments.
Additionally, Quick Move-In Homes are ideal for transferees
who need to move within a set timeframe for their employment.
Many of K. Hovnanian® Homes’ communities are near
business corridors or along major transportation routes for
commuting ease.
The Dover is one of four designs offered at Libertyville’s
North Pointe Estates, which GRAND OPENS January 19.
“New year’s resolutions often bring about new jobs and
opportunities,” said Konovodoff.
K. Hovnanian® Homes also is building in some of the most
sought-after school districts in Chicagoland such as Naperville’s
School District #203 and Indian Prairie School District #204,
Lincoln-Way Community High School District #210, Oswego
Community School District #308, and St. Charles Community
Unit District #303.
In addition to its Quick Move-In Homes, K. Hovnanian®
Homes offers townhomes, duplexes and single family homes with
prices, which are subject to change, that range from the upper
$100s to mid $800s to meet the needs of buyers at all stages of life.
The builder recently opened a new community in Plano and has
plans to grand open a new community of single family homes
in Libertyville, North Pointe Estates, on January 19, 2019. The
developer of North Pointe Estates is K. Hovnanian at North Pointe
Estates, LLC, an affiliate and indirect subsidiary of Hovnanian
Enterprises, Inc.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
with Devin Dubsky
Devin Dubsky is a junior on
Sandburg’s gymnastics team
and is returning from an
ACL injury.
How did you get
involved in gymnastics?
My mom [Kristen] was a
coach so I was in the gym
since I was born. I started
classes when I was two and
joined a team when I was
eight.
What do you love about
the sport?
I’ve met my best friends
through gymnastics. I love
being with the team and
working in the gym all the
time,
What is your favorite
event?
Vault. It great to run as fast
as you can to the vault and
hit the vault and nail your
landing. It feels good.
You injured your ACL
the first meet last year.
How tough was that?
BOYS BASKETBALL
Sandburg doesn’t drop the ball on New Year’s Eve
TIM CRONIN, Freelance Reporter
Four wins in a row.
A 10-7 record leaving 2018
for 2019.
Cohesion on offense and
defense.
Sandburg stepped into the
heat of SouthWest Suburban
Blue play with tangible momentum.
In their final four games
at York’s Jack Tosh Holiday
Tournament, the Eagles
proved they had learned how
to bounce back from adversity
(a victory over McHenry
following a loss to Naperville
North), come through in the
clutch (Kevin Agwomoh’s
four free-throws in the final
13 seconds for a come-frombehind
victory), win when
leaning on their defense (the
Eagles shot 34.5 percent from
the floor and still beat Timothy
Christian 57-51) and then
put away a tenacious foe.
The latter accomplishment
was a 70-67 victory over St.
Patrick (8-7) on New Year’s
Eve, a contest that captured
the Tosh consolation gonfalon
and accomplished after
the Eagles had fallen behind
by eight, six, eight and seven
points at various junctures,
only to rally each time.
The last time, they did so
for good, scoring their most
impressive win of the season.
“They really stuck with
it and made some really
big plays,” Sandburg coach
Todd Allen said. “St. Pat’s
is really good. To battle
back that like that, that many
times down, and not give up,
was huge.”
A game of runs with nine
lead-changes and as many
ties came down to the last two
minutes. Kevin Agwomoh’s
third of four three-pointers
earned Sandburg a 65-64
lead with 1:34 remaining, but
three free-throws moved the
Shamrocks ahead 66-65. Agwomoh,
who scored 11 of his
15 points in the final quarter,
Sandburg’s Marvin Agwomoh, shown driving in the Jack
Tosh Holiday Tournament consolation quarterfinals against
Lake Forest, was named to the all-tournament team and led
all athletes with 18 offensive rebounds.
PHOTOS BY JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
then drilled another threepointer
with 15 seconds left
for a 68-67 lead, and Khaled
Salah, who led Sandburg
with 18 points, added two
clutch free-throws with three
seconds left.
Nine-of-10 shooting in
the second quarter pulled the
Eagles within a basket, where
they remained after 24 minutes.
Sandburg finished 2018
winning six of its final seven
games.
Marv-alous
Marvin Agwomoh was
selected to the Jack Tosh
All-Tournament team after
averaging 11 points and six
rebounds per game.
The Eagles led all teams in
the 32-team tournament with
43 offensive rebounds. Marvin
Agwomoh led all players
with 18 offensive boards.
The moment
For Salah, standing on the
free-throw line with three
seconds left and Sandburg
leading by a point was deja
vu. He’d been there before,
with an unhappy memory.
“A couple games ago, I
was on the line late and went
one-and-one and it sorta cost
us the game, and I did not
want to do that again,” Salah
said. “We’d lost a lot of close
games to good teams, so
beating a really good team
will really help us with our
confidence.”
Along with Salah and Kevin
Agwomoh in double-figures,
Marvin Agwomoh and
Atharva Atreya each scored
12 points, and the Eagles
got 13 points from the bench
while outrebounding St. Patrick
31-23. Precision passing
added up to 18 assists for the
Eagles on 26 baskets.
Next up
Sandburg has 10 days between
games and only two
in the first 20 days of 2019.
Conference play continues
with a home game with
Lockport Township on Jan.
18, the first of six games in
12 days in a feast-or-famine
slate.
Sandburg gymnastics coach to retire — really
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Longtime Sandburg/
Stagg girls gymnastics
coach Mike White gathered
his team around and announced
his retirement and
he and his players laughed
and cried.
That was on Feb. 10, 2016.
Due to circumstances in
finding a replacement, he
stayed around for a few more
years but on Saturday, Jan.
5, Sandburg Athletic Director
Tom Freyer announced
White’s retirement and that
the Fourth Erin Olmsted
Memorial Meet would be his
final home meet.
“My paperwork is all in
– that’s it,” White said. “I
never thought this would last
as long and I would have this
much luck. I’ve had a lot of
good teams. I’ve had some
state champions.”
This is White’s 27th year
as coach.
Sandburg finished fourth
in the 11-team meet with
127.925 points. Lincoln-
Way coop won its third
straight Olmsted meet with
137.150 points. The Eagles’
Taylor Talley won the vault
(9.4), and was seventh in
the all-around (34.050).
Maddie/Maddy news
Sandburg junior gymnast
Maddie Giglio, who finished
third in the Illinois High
School Association state
tournament in all-around,
left the team in midseason to
concentrate on diving.
“She’s probably looking
a diving scholarship right
now,” White said. “Last year
she had a tremendous season
in gymnastics and I think she
wanted to finish on that high
note from last year. I hope it
works out for her.”
Former star gymnast
Maddy Roe has given up
gymnastics after undergoing
a second surgery on her
right fibula. She was set to
compete with the University
of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
“I knew it had to end
sometime,” Roe said. “It
ended a few years sooner
than I expected.”
The Eagles Hockey Club helps
others, despite its own hurdles
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Members of David Dolitsky’s family participate in a ceremonial puck drop before the
Eagles Hockey Club battled an alumni team on Dec. 28.
High school hockey is not
cheap.
The Illinois High School
Association does not affiliate
itself with hockey, so
athletes have to join clubs.
Between ice time, equipment,
transportation, occasional
hotel rooms and
other costs tossed in there,
families are coughing up
several thousand dollars per
year for their athletes to participate.
Sandburg High School’s
Eagles Hockey Club is no
exception. Parents and players
have to dig pretty deep
into their pockets to fund all
of this.
There is a seven-member
board and six-member
coaching staff, and these
people are working on a
volunteer basis and put in
some long hours.
“The joke around here
is that being a board member
is a full-time job, and
we use our real jobs just to
make money,” board member
Jeff Westphal said.
Anyway, no one is complaining.
This team accepts
the hurdles that come with
running and playing for a
club.
And while this group
huddles up and comes up
with various fundraisers
and tries to get sponsors to
help defray some costs, the
Eagles organization digs
deeper into its pockets and
spends even more time to
help others.
The Eagles used the 2018
portion of the schedule to
help others with three major
fundraisers.
In October, the Eagles
held a food drive and delivered
400 pounds of chow to
the Orland Township Food
Pantry.
In December, the Eagles
raised $145 for the Toy Box
Collection in Orland Park
from a Sling a Sleigh Bell
promotion.
To end the year with a
bang, the Eagles held the
third David Dolitsky Memorial
Alumni Game on
Dec. 28 at the Arctic Ice
Arena.
Dolitsky died in 2016 after
he was struck by a vehicle
while he was cutting the
grass. Money raised on the
night went to a scholarship
in Dolitsky’s name.
“I think it’s a great idea
to get involved with the
community,” Eagles varsity
captain Thomas Cavanaugh
said. “We should give back
to the community,”
“Helping the community
is important to the whole
team,” added Josh Ryan,
one of the captains of the
junior varsity squad. “It
takes time out of the day but
it just feels good to help out.
It doesn’t feel like you are
taking that much time out of
the day when you are doing
good for someone.”
The Eagles finished the
2018 portion of the schedule
with a 12-19-2 record.
They have six games scheduled
in January before playoffs
begin.
Randy Apter was the
team points leader with 15
goals and five assists. Connor
Fullick had 16 points.
Cavanaugh and Edward
Slack each contributed 11
points with Slack accomplishing
that in just eight
games. Luke Maslowski
and Bart Florczyk each had
10 points.
Blake Kallberg, Luke
Carter and Jacob Elliott
have shared time as goalies.
Eagles President Joe
Kwiecinski is in the first
year of his second tour of
duty as a board boss. He
was also president in 2013,
2014 and 2015.
He said that aside from
the funding, another obstacle
his players face is late
practices.
High school players usually
get later slots,” he said.
“We practice at 9:30 p.m.
on Mondays, Tuesdays and
Wednesdays. By the time
they get home it’s 11:15 or
11:30. They have school the
next day. So my hat is off to
all of the families and the
kids.
“But the kids are great
about it. They all seem to
keep their grades up, even
with the late nights. It helps
to have great players and
great families.’’
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Future looking great for Eagles
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Sandburg’s varsity is in
the midst of a turnaround
season winning nine of its
first 16 games.
Nine of the 14 players on
the roster are underclassmen,
including freshman
Erin O’Connor.
Look closer and there
should be even more excitement
for Eagles in the future.
The sophomore team improved
to 17-1 after stunning
Bolingbrook, 42-40,
on the road on Thursday,
Jan. 3 after trailing most of
the game. Freshman Lauren
Coghlan’s rebound-basket in
the closing seconds helped
the Eagles win.
All 42 points came from
freshmen - Coghlan, her twin
sister Madison, Danielle Antoine,
Charlotte Trunk and
Payton Prodoehl.
The Eagles’ lone loss was
to Hinsdale Central in the
Brenda Whitesell Hinsdale
South Thanksgiving Tournament
championship game
and coach Michael Bickham’s
team has been on a
roll since, including holding
Andrew to four points in a
game in December.
“This team adjusts like
no other team that I’ve seen
before,” Bickham said. “We
had to play a full-court pressure
defense for the first time
all season against Bolingbrook
and they executed. At
halftime, they adjusted to go
to a 2-3 defense and it was
also a defense we had not
played all season. They never
cease to surprise me, they
go to it and they adjust.’’
Raided
The varsity held powerful
Bolingbrook scoreless
for the first 6 minutes, 30
seconds of the SouthWest
Suburban Blue showdown
on Thursday, Jan. 3, but the
Raiders scored 11 in the next
90 seconds and went on to
win, 60-39.
Kayla Snaidauf led the
Eagles with 11 points and
O’Connor added nine.
THURSDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK
All is well after award-winning confusion in SWSC bowling
THE FIRST WINTER
POSTSEASON EVENT,
BOYS BOWLING
REGIONAL ACTION, IS
SATURDAY, JAN. 12. A
FEW FACTS:
1. ROCK HARD
Rockford-area
schools have
dominated the state
meet, winning four
of the past five state
titles and taking
second place four of
the last five years as
well.
2. SIXTH SENSE
team finish was sixth
in the state in 2015-
3. TWO MEDALS FOR
KOPERA
The only bowler in
Sandburg history to
win a top-12 medal
was Joey Kopera,
who took a fifthplace
award in 2010-
2011 and a state
title in 2011-2012.
Jeff Vorva
j.vorva@22ndcm.com
For some, it was hard
to make heads or tails
of what was going on
at the SouthWest Suburban
Conference bowling meet —
even after a coin flip.
The meet, hosted by Andrew
High School at Orland
Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 5,
started with some coaches,
players and fans who
thought that there would be
two groups of awards — a
trophy for the winning team
and six medals for the Blue
Division champion and five
more All-Conference bowlers
and placers, and the same
for the Red Division.
Some headed into the
tournament thinking that
there would be one overall
team champ, an individual
champion and 10 more allconference
players, as stated
on the conference’s website,
which was revised on Oct.
29.
About halfway through the
event, it was announced that
it was a two-division format,
even though there was only
one trophy and six medals
available for the varsity
Sandburg’s boys bowling team (left photo) got to keep its trophy for winning the SWSC Blue on Saturday, Jan. 5, but
Lincoln-Way West coach Scott Jablonski (right photo) hid the trophy under his shirt before giving it back.
bowlers. Apparently, some
coaches were angry. A coinflip
was held and Blue award
winners got their treasures
while Red winners posed for
photos with awards and had
to give them back. They will
receive theirs in the future.
The conference bylaws
state that if there are less
than 10 teams participating,
which has been the case in
the past two years, it is one
division. If there are 10 or
more: two divisions.
“There were nine teams in
the conference and Bradley-
Bourbonnais came in late,”
Andrew coach Mark Lobes
said. “We were broken into
divisions throughout the
school year. Maybe some
of the newer coaches didn’t
realize that.”
Bolingbrook Athletic Director
Robert Rose the head
of SWSC’s bowling, decided
the fair thing to do was flip a
coin for the awards.
While there may have
been some angst at the alleys
in the middle of the event,
there was a little humor
during the award ceremony,
when Lincoln-Way West and
Red championship coach
Scott Jablonski hid the team
trophy under his shirt before
giving it back.
It was also interesting to
see Andrew All-Conference
bowler Rich Payton receive
a medal from Lobes, and
then minutes later give it
back to the coach.
Despite the confusion,
what was clear was that
Sandburg had another outstanding
tournament, racking
up 6,393 pins in six games to
win the Blue and would have
won the overall title if it was
not broken into divisions.
Eagle senior Cameron
Crowe won his third individual
league title with a
1,393; however, the Red
Division’s Michael Nork of
Lincoln-Way West, had the
overall top score of 1,465.
Sandburg’s Matt Bartlett
(1,268, third place) and Alex
Grezlovski (1,267, fourth
place) nearly mirrored each
other’s scores on the way to
an All-Conference award.
Marc Moll (1,249. Seventh
place) and Timmy Novak
(1,216, ninth) rounded out
the Eagles squad.
Andrew had a rough fifthplace
finish in the Red with
a 5,535. Peyton had a 1,206,
John Malinowski rolled a
1,129, Daniel Manijak had
a 1,053. They were the only
three to bowl all six games
for the Bolts.
Andrew, Sandburg and
Tinley Park are all at the Oak
Forest Regional on Saturday,
Jan. 12 as the winter
postseason in Illinois gets
underway then and lasts until
mid-March.
“We haven’t bowled
there [Oak Forest Lanes] in
awhile, but we’ll practice
there,” Lobes said. “Our kids
grew up around there and
know those alleys well.”
Last year, neither Andrew
nor Sandburg qualified a
team to state, breaking a
13-year streak in which at
least one of the District 230
powers qualified.
Crowe is hoping his team
gets back.
“It’s the start of the
playoffs,” he said. “We have
to be ready. We have to be
prepared. We’re coming in
with a lot of momentum.”
