Career Services Coordinators Melissa Duffy and Steve Belford are currently seeking professionals who would be interested in participating in small group panel discussions among various career fields. The members of the Class of 2022 represent 44 U.S. states and 43 international countries and territories and is also one of the most diverse and competitive classes ever admitted to Lehigh. Bank Lane, Lake Forest, on Sept. 2, 2017. Sage Explorers is not your typical toy store. Gurza’s toy store is home to toys, craft activities and a learning center. Adding the concept of a learning center for children who need a little extra tutoring was a way for Gurza to help students and continue her passion of teaching. “I didn’t want to leave teaching entirely, so we have the learning center where we do a lot of tutoring, classes and craft events as well,” Gurza said. In the Learning Center students can receive tutoring one on one, or upon special request tutoring can be done in small groups. Of the 9,716 applications to Colgate last year, just 25 percent were accepted. The average high school GPA for accepted students was 3.8 out of 4.0. Colgate received applications from 50 states, Washington D.C., and 133 countries. International students make up 9 percent of the class. Knox College New Trier graduate makes dean’s list Shannon Brooks has been named to the Knox College Dean’s List of distinguished students for the 2018 Fall Term. To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must have earned at least 2.5 credits in the term, with a grade point average of 3.6 or better (on a 4.0 scale). Brooks is majoring in Spanish at Knox. Some students may have majors listed as “Undecided” because majors typically aren’t declared until the end of the second year. Brooks completed high school at New Trier High School. THE WINNETKA CURRENT Library’s kid-friendly new years party ‘a staple event’ The Winnetka Public Library held its annual Noon Years Eve party on Dec. 28, inviting children and families from the community to celebrate the holiday early. The event, which lasted from the kid-friendly hour of 11 a.m. until noon, featured music, activities and books all centered on the theme of “International New Years,” and even closed the party with a casual countdown. “It’s one of my favorite programs of the year,” Youth Services Librarian Amanda Garrity said. “Kids don’t usually get to traditionally celebrate New Year’s, and it’s nice to see both our regulars and new faces here.” Stationed throughout the youth section were fact sheets about New Year’s celebrations throughout the world, including in Spain, Ecuador, Scotland, Russia and Jordan. Craft tables gave kids the chance to make their own noisemakers by filling plastic eggs with rice, or to do an art project using bright cupcake liners and colored rice on black paper to make fireworks. A baby-friendly area spread out blankets scattered with balls, cups and sound-making rain sticks, creating a fun place to crawl while older siblings colored or played with library toys geared towards bigger kids. Books in the “how-to” genre on display encouraged kids to resolve to learn new hobbies and skills in the coming year. Families ate popcorn and grapes with seltzer water to complete the party-like atmosphere. While in the past patrons were asked to register for Noon Years Eve and the size was limited to 50 people, this year no registration was required and the crowd swelled close to 100. “We decided to do no registration to be more welcoming this year,” youth associate Natalie Roche said. “It’s nice to get people in who don’t come as often.” Reporting by Christine Adams, Freelance Reporter. Beginning his design, Rebholz starts by using a chainsaw. An onlooker, Kevin Afryl, 8, of Libertyville, receives a carved “ice plate,” or a name plate, from Rebholz. Chicago Botanic Garden visitors watch intently as Rebholz finishes his design with a new tool. Using a saw, Rebholz attracts a large crowd outside the Wonderland Express exhibit. Rebholz finishes off his design. Earlier in the day, he also carved a snowman.
