Recalling some of Homer Glen’s top stories of 2018 Become a Horizon Plus member: homerhorizon.com/plus From the Editor An exposition of healthy living to jumpstart wellness goals in 2019 Thomas Czaja tom@homerhorizon.com For those who embarked on the simultaneously, always admirable, yet difficult task of being regular gym-goers or better models of health in 2019, I salute you. But as we are now almost two weeks into the new year as of this issue’s release, I feel like this is the turning point where resolutions tend to slip a bit. We have the best of intentions, but after a fortnight, we might not be as fully into the routine as we like, and cracks in it may already be starting to show. Now, if you have kept up with going to the gym and been the epitome of wellness, that’s great. If you have had some inconsistencies with it and are working to get up to speed on those healthy resolutions, that’s OK – nobody is perfect. Either way, in the middle of January, arguably the dullest month of the year, we may all be in need of a bit of a push on our healthy journeys, and we need that motivation, regardless, at any point of the year. If you are looking to do something different with it to get you back on or continuing on the right path, let me point you to Page 13 of this issue. There, you will find the preview for our publisher’s annual Healthy Living Expo, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in Tinley Park. The free event will feature a numbers of vendors pertaining to fitness, wellness and related topics. We may all have different definitions for what healthy living means to us. But we can probably all agree that healthy living is something that is comprehensive, right? We know if we go to the gym then go home and eat lots of chocolate chip cookies or three cheeseburgers, it’s not quite a balance. That’s not to say we don’t all deserve indulgences here and there, days off and all that as rewards (and to stay sane). Yet, it’s about staying well-rounded in our health endeavors and finding a balance in all facets to put our best foot forward. As you can see in the preview, there is likely something at the expo for everybody, wherever your specific focus is for your fitness and wellness. The expo allows you to go at your own pace, talking only to whoever you are most interested in speaking with. Area residents are surrounded with like-minded individuals all trying to improve themselves and learn more on how to best do just that. Anyhow, the expo is just one suggestion for how to make 2019 the year one takes real steps to become the healthiest version they can be. Whether this is achieved through an expo on a Saturday, a gym membership, home workouts, yoga, relaxation techniques, taking personal time or what have you, the main thing is just finding the right combo. I know I plan to continue to work on my health across the board and make that a real priority this year, and I encourage you to do the same and wish you the best of luck in doing so. “Happy to report that through the generosity of friends, family, neighbors and community of Homer Glen Village Square, donations totaling $1,465 will be going to Shady Oaks Camp. Follow The Homer Horizon: @homerhorizon Letters to the Editor Thanking the community When my wife, Jeannette, and I moved to Homer Glen back in 2000, we knew virtually no one in the community. It just seemed like a nice place and was convenient for our commutes to work. Now, I know that moving here was no accident. Jeannette passed away in April of 2018 after a nearly sevenyear battle with breast cancer, and I can’t express how grateful I am, along with my three children, for the love and generosity given by the wonderful people we have come to know in Homer Glen, Lockport, Orland Park and Lemont before and after her passing. There are too many names to mention who have contributed to the Meal Train and Go- FundMe campaign, but you know who you are. To all of our friends and family who have helped out in any way, including just thinking about us and praying for us, I just want to express a heartfelt thank you; we are truly blessed to know so many compassionate people.
