Schools
The largest single employer in
Highlands County, the school
district operates 17 schools serving
more than 12,000 students annually.
Highlands County has three high
schools, four middle schools,
nine elementary schools and the
Kindergarten Learning Center
in Sebring. Advanced classes are
available at all grade levels.
Numerous private schools
are available in the Sebring area.
Heartland Christian Academy has
grades K-12, while St. Catherine
Catholic School offers grades K-7
and is expected to add grade 8 in
the coming year. Both are near
downtown Sebring.
Health
care
In addition to several specialists
in cardiology, cancer treatment,
digestive disorders, pediatrics,
obstetrics, foot care and wound care,
the county has three hospitals to
serve the population.
Heading south from Avon Park,
off U.S. 27 and halfway to Sebring,
residents will find AdventHealth
Sebring, formerly Florida Hospital
Heartland Medical Center, a 157
private-room facility built in 1998
at 4200 Sun ’n Lake Blvd. and part
of the Adventist Health System.
AdventHealth Lake Placid, formerly
Florida Hospital Lake Placid, is part
of the same medical system and
has 50 private rooms; it was built in
1981, just north of Lake Placid.
Also in Sebring, just inside the
southern city limit along U.S. 27, sits
Highlands Regional Medical Center
at 3600 S. Highlands Ave. The 126-
bed hospital has been open since
1965. ■
