Editor’s Desk
Reflecting on Christmas past
Herald festive activities started with our usual get together
with staff. It was an opportunity to remind them how much we
appreciate their continued contribution and dedication to such a
successful publication.
That was followed by a joyous Christmas break and the
opportunity to spend time with relatives and friends.
Our immediate family is spread far and wide which means we
don’t see them anywhere near as much as we would like. But this
year, for the first time in a number of years, we caught up with
most of them face-to-face.
It was so gratifying to see our beautiful grandchildren grown
into mature, intelligent, capable young adults, achieving in their
fields of endeavour. To hear them debate and discuss left us with
the distinct feeling they would leave this world a better place.
We didn’t see all our children and grandchildren, those in
the Northern Territory, and one who was rostered to work over
Christmas at the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin. But, thanks to
the marvels of modern technology, we were able to make contact
and share Christmas with them.
As we start a new year we are mindful of those who are facing
personal health challenges. We want you to know our warmest
thoughts are with you.
We hope 2019 is rewarding and kind to all our readers and
friends.
Council may have to pump water from Wivenhoe
Residents urged to minimise water use
The Toowoomba Region faces the prospect of
having to pump water from Wivenhoe Dam for the
first time if adequate rain does not soon fall.
The Toowoomba Regional Council established
a pump station at Wivenhoe Dam about 2010, but
apart from short pumping runs for testing and
maintenance, it has not yet supplied water for the
region’s regular water needs.
This followed a failed attempt by the previous
Toowoomba City Council to recycle water for human
consumption.
The council has been told that its three dams,
Cressbrook, Perseverance and Cooby were at just
41.9 per cent useable capacity in November.
The council has a policy that when its water
reserves in the dams drop to 40 per cent, a pumping
program from Wivenhoe Dam on the Brisbane River
starts.
In November, Cressbrook Dam was at 45.7 per
cent useable capacity, Perseverance Dam was at 33.1
per cent capacity, and Cooby Dam was at 38.6 per
cent useable capacity, a total useable capacity of 41.9
per cent.
Without substantial rainfall, the council expects to
reach the dam storage level to start pumping from
Wivenhoe Dam by early to mid-2019.
All residents are being urged to minimise water
usage to preserve existing supplies.
Private bore water users are also requested
to reduce usage where possible as aquifer levels
throughout the region are stressed.
Toowoomba has a four tier system of water
restrictions - permanent conservation measures,
medium level, high level, and extreme level
restrictions.
Each level is triggered when a water supply falls to
a certain capacity.
Towns taking water from the Toowoomba bulk
supply are on permanent conservation measures
where there are minor restrictions.
However, towns which take water from bores
to the south and southwest of Toowoomba are on
medium level restrictions.
Challenge to feed a hungry world
The big challenge facing us all
is feeding the world’s growing
population (9.8 billion by 2050
and 11.2 billion by the turn of the
century), in a changing climate,
while maintaining quality
products and nurturing the
environment.
The tag line ‘doing more with
less’ is often used as shorthand
for this challenge, but what does
it actually mean?
In practice, it means farming
systems will need to intensify.
A fundamental step to
achieving this is adequately
protecting the limited, prime
agricultural land we have –
something the Queensland
Farmers’ Federation continues to
work hard to realise.
To highlight just how important
this is, it useful to consider that
currently around 70 per cent of
Queensland’s farm gate gross
value of production is being
produced on or is dependent on
(i.e. intensive animal production)
only about 2.5 per cent of the
state’s total land area. The other
fundamental piece of the puzzle is
properly addressing the energywater-climate-food
nexus.
While farmers are familiar
with the interconnections between
energy, water, climate and food
production, policy and regulatory
developments continue to treat
these as distinctly separate areas.
Government policy does not
provide essential and enabling
services such as electricity
and water at a ‘fair cost’ for
agriculture.
As trade-exposed price takers,
farm businesses have virtually
no ability to offset these costs and
are more vulnerable than most to
a changing climate.
Where energy is concerned,
over the past 10 years the price
of electricity has increased about
10 times the rate of inflation.
A critical input for intensifying
www.cnmchealthcare.com.au
www.cmhealthcare.com.au
By STUART ARMITAGE - President Queensland Farmers Federation
agriculture, electricity has now
become a major, and in some
cases an unsustainable, cost for
farm businesses. This is evidenced
by figures from the Australian
Energy Regulator that show there
was an 82pc increase in small
business disconnections by Ergon
Retail (regional Queensland) in
2016-17.
Similarly, the price of water
and the associated pumping costs
are becoming prohibitive, as
evidenced by about 300,000ML of
unutilised water sitting in existing
public storages, very low takeup
of additional water releases
and farmers reverting to lower
productivity, dryland agriculture.
Moreover, as the Queensland
Competition Authority
investigates prices for bulk water
supply schemes and distribution
systems, some irrigators will
face significantly higher prices
because of cost increases to
maintain scheme assets, rising
electricity and insurance costs,
and the impacts of lower water
demand forecasts.
Additionally, global trends
point to consumers becoming
more environmentally and
carbon conscious about their
future food.
In response to this social
change, a body of evidence is
building that sparing natural
habitats by using high-yield
farming to produce food is the
best option for feeding the world
while saving its species, as using
less land may also produce fewer
pollutants, cause less soil loss and
consume less water.
With climate change upon
us, solutions are urgent. owever,
there is no central authority
working to solve them. QFF
calls on governments to assume
responsibility and examine the
water-energy-climate-food nexus
and the implications of not
addressing this key issue.
or vegetable juice only diets, detox
drinks sold commercially, laxatives.
They commonly claim to help
the body get rid of toxins, give
the organs a rest, and stimulate the
liver to work better.
There is also a vast number of
other claims made by companies
who sell detox products, which are
too numerous to mention here.
There is little to no evidence to
support the claims made by these
companies that our bodies are full
of toxins, and that such diets are
required to remove toxins.
The human body is very efficient
at expelling toxins which
may be ingested orally or in other
ways from the environment
around us, and toxins do not build
up over time in the liver and kidneys
as is claimed by some detox
companies.
Many people who complete detox
diets claim to feel energised
and healthier immediately after.
This could be for two reasons.
The first is due to the placebo effect
and the second is that removing
processed food, or alcohol, or
high-calorie fatty foods from a a
diet would almost certainly help
that person to feel better.
But you don’t need a detox diet
or a product off the shelf to do this.
There is an abundance of evidence
to advise us on what foods
to avoid or eat in moderation, so it
would be best to simply follow advice
from medical experts on this.
A 2015 peer reviewed study
published in the Journal of Human
Nutrition and Dietics, titled
Detox diets for toxin elimination
and weight management, a critical
review of the evidence concluded
that, “Although the detox industry
is booming, there is very little
clinical evidence to support the
use of these diets”.
Kathleen Zelman, director of
nutrition for WebMD says, “We
have heard a great deal about detox
diets in recent years.
“But it’s all hype with no health
benefits. There are many ways to
get your body clean and healthy
and this isn’t one of them.”
As mentioned above some detox
companies include fasting in
their program, and while detox
itself is not evidence based, there
are studies which suggest that intermittent
fasting can have health
benefits for people wanting to reduce
calorie intake, or break old
eating habits.
LOCAL HISTORY
“You should always remember that you are members of the largest Empire ever known. As Britishers you should always
try to uphold the prestige of the flag which I am going to unroll.” - Reverend Henry Vyvian Tyrrel, August 24, 1901
Oakey’s moment of glory - or was it?
By MAX and PAM BACON
History records that in a ceremony at Melbourne’s
Exhibition building on September 3,
1901 an enthusiastic crowd saw the new flag of
Australia flown for the first time. The Governor
General’s wife, Lady Hopetoun, unfurled the flag.
The inauguration of the Commonwealth of
Australia had taken place in Centennial Park,
Sydney on January 1, 1901. In a purpose built rotunda,
Lord Hopetoun took the oath of office to
become Australia’s first Governor- General. The
first Federal Cabinet (appointed not elected) was
then sworn in.
The first Federal Parliament was declared open
for the first time on May 9, 1901 in the Royal Exhibition
Building, Melbourne witnessed by 12,000
invited guests.
Following a request by the British Government
a world-wide competition was conducted to design
an Australian national flag.
The only stipulation was that the Union Jack
had to be included in the design. Five similar designs
shared the prize money of £200. Our present
flag includes minor changes from the 1901 flag,
notably to dimensions, the number of points on
stars in the Southern Cross, and one extra point on
the Commonwealth star.
Just wait a moment!! What about the Reverend
Henry Vyvian Tyrrel’s Red Letter day at Oakey?
He organised his flag unfurling ceremony for Saturday,
August 24, 1901.
A picnic was organised for the school children
with the unfurling of the new Australian flag to
take place at 3pm.
Members of the Oakey Creek School committee
were Reverend Tyrrel, chairman, Messrs Bauer,
treasurer, Robb, secretary, Collins, Schrier, Albion
and Mr Wicks, schoolmaster. Assistants for
the event were Messrs Morrison, Castner, Faulkner,
McGrath, Brounhultz, Tallen, J. Brickley, P.
Allen, Dillon and Fogerty.
Games were played until 3pm when the headmaster
Mr Wicks called the children to assemble
near the flagstaff.
The event had also attracted many parents and
interested towns people.
Reverend Tyrrel in a short address said: “You
should always remember that you are members of
the largest Empire ever known.
“As Britishers you should always try to uphold
the prestige of the flag which I am going to unroll.”
As the flag was unfurled the children led by Mr
Wicks sang God Save the King.
A traditional school picnic lunch of sandwiches,
cakes, fruit, lollies, tea, coffee and more was
much enjoyed by the crowd.
Regretfully, the school picnic is no longer organised
to bring people together.
The vicar then took photographs of the children
and parents.
If we could find Rev Tyrrel’s photographs they
may verify which flag he unfurled.
The ceremony to unfurl the new Blue Ensign in
Melbourne on September 3, 1901 was met with
well organised opposition.
Union Jack flags were being sent to schools
around Australia.
Maybe Reverend Tyrrel’s flag was “new” because
it had not been unfurled.
The tone of Reverend Tyrrel’s speech to the
children, however, suggests he may have unfurled
the Union Jack.
The 1902 photo of the Oakey Creek State
School children with the Union Jack in the background
gives further evidence for this conclusion.
Hopefully, evidence may come to light to solve
this mystery.
History should always be clear cut.
We have had this story part written for many
years and have decided to put it into print.
Maybe someone can tell us which flag was unfurled
by Reverend Tyrrel.
National Flag Day on September 3 each year
commemorates the first time the Blue Ensign flag
was flown at Melbourne’s Exhibition building in
1901.
PIK-UP A GREAT DEAL
AT HUGHES CAR SALES
“When the MAHINDRA PIK-UP first hit our shores around a decade ago, it revolutionised the way we looked at a
WORK UTE in Australia. With a very ATTRACTIVE PRICE POINT and IMPRESSIVE CARRYING CAPACITY, the
vehicle soon established itself as a TOUGH, RELIABLE WORKHORSE that wasn’t going to break the bank. Today, the
Pik-Up is back, bringing with it a number of cosmetic and mechanical changes that will appeal to fans of the original
offering and will just as quickly impress buyers new to the model.
Extensive local testing has seen the Pik-Up strenuously put through its paces – and then adapted and modified to help
it thrive in harsh Australian conditions. One of the big pluses is it has retained its LOW COST PRICE TAG and you’ll be
spoilt for choice with two spec levels – the S6 (base model) with fabric seats, air-conditioning, steel wheels and a MP3/
radio and the S10 which comes complete with extras like 16-inch alloys, cruise control, central locking and a reversing
camera, to name just a few. You’ll soon discover there’s A LOT MORE GRUNT as well, with the six-speed manual
gearbox and more powerful engine giving the driver total confidence, no matter how rugged the terrain. The Pik-Up
boasts an UPGRADED 2.2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine with an improved 103kW and 330Nm to call on when
needed. Peak torque is available from 1600rpm to 2800rpm. And with noise control and the added comfort of arm and
head rests, you’ll soon forget it’s A WORK UTE and find it closer to a diesel passenger car instead.
Everything from the vehicle’s exterior to its headlights and badging have been given a sleek new look while inside,
you’ve a got a ROOMY AND SPACIOUS CABIN that offers EXCELLENT VISIBILITY To ensure new owners can tailor
the vehicle to their exact wishes, there’s a host of QUALITY ACCESSORIES available including WINCH COMPATIBLE
STEEL BULLBARS and STAINLESS-STEEL NUDGE BARS snorkels and a wide selection of trays in both colour-coded
or galvanised steel (as well as aluminium). There’s also a SUSPENSION UPGRADE and TOWBAR OPTION.
There are four colours to choose from – classic Arctic White, De-Sat Silver, Napoli Black and the striking Red Rage.
HIGH COUNTRY
FARMING
Pig-on-the-spit sale popular with festive season buyers
Miles Noller reporting
Festivities, Christmas
and more importantly
New Year, strengthened
the market for smaller pigs
at the last sale of the year
for Elders Toowoomba.
The demand was for
the pig-on-the-spit type,
and the Elders sale offered
more than 300 head to a
strong buying panel.
These celebration
barbecue pigs are in the
range of 19kg live to 52kg,
compared to regular pigs
for pork (70kg to 85kg)
and baconer pigs (85kg to
110kg).
They are prized by
some community and
ethnic groups particularly
for New Year celebrations.
A capacity crowd at
the Toowoomba saleyards
watched as 98 of the
pigs were bought for a
Sydney processor, 168
were secured by a Crows
Nest processor for various
markets. Brisbane Valley
Meats was also among the
buyers.
The highest price was
$188 for a 52kg white pig.
White pigs commanded
the best prices.
A couple of pens of
black cross pigs and
saddlebacks sold at
reduced levels. Auctioneer
Mark Gersekowski
said Large Whites are
generally better muscled
than the other breeds, and
for some there was also an
issue with the dark hair/
skin pigmentation.
A few little piglets
lighter than 19kg sold
for $82 each and would
be taken back to a farm
to grow out to a saleable
weight.
There has been an
increase in saleyard pig
prices in recent weeks,
offering some relief for
producers who have
struggled for some time
with low prices for pigs
and high grain prices.
A number of producers
closed their piggeries
during 2018, and others
are hanging-in with
unprofitable margins
waiting for better
conditions.
While the sale of
Australian produced
hams increased prior
to Christmas, many
consumers seem oblivious
to what pigmeat products
are Australian and what is
imported, despite changes
to labelling.
Consumers seem
indifferent to the fact that
70 per cent or more of
pigmeat sold in Australian
supermarkets and stores,
is imported.
These black/white crossbred pigs sold at reduced levels.
Government scare-mongers about
land clearing - Agforce
AgForce has criticised
the Queensland Government
for using selective
science in an attempt to
convince the community
that its heavy-handed vegetation
management laws
are necessary.
The government has
creatively used data from
the annual State Landcover
and Trees Study report
to claim that its Vegetation
Management Act was
required to prevent land
clearing for agriculture.
AgForce general president
Georgie Somerset
said the government had
misused the report to
scare-monger about land
clearing and justify the introduction
of its confusing
and counter-productive
laws.
The laws have been
widely criticised for contributing
to the ferocity of
last month’s devastating
bushfires by not allowing
producers to manage fuel
loads on their properties or
clear adequate fire breaks.
“The government’s
heavily edited version of
the SLATS report doesn’t
mention that most clearing
is done to provide feed
to prevent livestock from
starving during drought
and to maintain land, including
controlling weeds
and invasive species that
compete with native vegetation,”
Mrs Somerset
said.
“The four-page summary
cherry-picked by the
government from the full
100-page document only
tells half the story.
“The community needs
and deserves to see the
entire report to understand
vegetation clearing. However,
the government has
refused to release it.
“For example, the
football fields of cleared
land quoted in their media
release represents
just 0.2 per cent of total
Queensland land area.
“It also doesn’t mention
that around 40 per cent of
this area has already been
cleared and is simply being
maintained.
“And it only measures
how much land has been
cleared, not how much
vegetation has grown over
the same period.
“The government’s
misuse of the report to
achieve a quick media hit
before Christmas distorts
the picture.
“The fact is that the
VMA makes it harder
for producers to prevent
and contain fires on their
properties, with subsequent
loss of livestock,
wildlife and habitat, and
for pastoralists to manage
vegetation to provide sustainable
fodder for their
animals, especially during
drought.”
Mrs Somerset said
AgForce had pushed for
the government’s newfound
commitment to
“enhancing the scope of
SLATS and vegetation
information to support
evidence-based decision-making.
“We have been arguing
for years that government
scientists should have
the resources they need
to examine how much
vegetation is growing in
Queensland not just how
much is being cleared,”
she said.
“This information has
again not been included in
the summary report.
“AgForce has always
said we are willing to engage
in a scientific, evi-
Mrs SOMERSET
Long lasting solution
dence-based approach to
vegetation management
that examines all the facts,
including how much vegetation
has regrown and
why vegetation was being
managed, not just how
much has been cleared.
“You can’t get the best
environmental and agricultural
production outcomes
when decisions are
made on flawed or incomplete
data.
“We implore the government
to let the science
tell the whole story and
work with those most affected
by these laws to
come up with a long lasting
solution.”
Is your life in crisis because of someone’s drinking?
Alcoholism is a family disease because it affects the family as a whole and members individually.
With alcoholism, the heat is constantly being turned up, but nobody notices. Cunning and baffling!
As a progressive disease it may start out with casually accepting unacceptable behaviour. Oh he
didn’t mean that. He just had too much to drink last night. A few years down the road the behaviour
has slowly grown more and more intolerable, but it is still being accepted and becomes the “norm”
(National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Family Disease 2016.)
Domestic violence, financial stress, emotional abuse, shame and despair
are often consequences of having an alcoholic in your life. Al-Anon
Family Groups have been supporting and empowering families and
friends of alcoholics in their quiet despair for over 60 years. Al-Anon has
always co-operated with all helping agencies including Law enforcement,
Rehabilitation facilities, Hospitals, Education and Community Support
Agencies. Statistically there are at least 6 people directly affected by an
alcoholic’s behaviour. Families can be destroyed; children become lost
emotionally and can go on to destructive behaviour themselves. All of these consequences can
involve police intervention at various times. Al-Anon members have been invited to speak to police
officers in training at Police Academies over the years. This has been most effective. Police go out
into the community with a better understanding of alcoholism in domestic violence situations. They
can suggest Al-Anon Family Groups to families who are being affected.
Al-Anon Family Groups have a clear message: there is a solution and there is help.
Volunteers Shaun Dodds, Nina Beardmore,
Stephanie Darling and Cody Maher.
Highfields Pioneer Village volunteers co-ordinated
a fundraiser on Sunday, December 30, to
raise final funds for the ongoing care of their miniature
pony Clementine and her friend Charlie the
Clydesdale who were viciously attacked by dogs
in November.
Volunteers hosted a sausage sizzle at the Highfields
Woolworths in Lauder Drive. “Fundraising
has been going really well, people are really happy
to help Clementine, she is looking really good and
recovering so we just want to raise enough money
for her new fence” Stephanie Darling said.
So far the Go Fund Me page has raised $25,716
of the $30,000 goal. Money is needed to cover vet
fees and erect a suitably high fence that large dogs
will not be able to jump over.
The current fence is over 100 years old, the typical
barbed wire farming fence designed to keep
cattle and horses in.
Animal carer at the Pioneer Village Carol Kleinschmidt
said horses, poultry and other rare breeds
should be free to live without fear of being attacked.
“A security fence is the only way we can protect
our furry and feathered friends from stray dogs
and foxes, she said.
In the future, only the front gate near the office
would be left open during the day for visitors and
volunteers to enter and to keep unwanted predators
out.
“A huge thank you to all the beautiful people
who have donated to the fundraising pages already,
our volunteers’ goal is so much more a reality
because of you,” Carol said.
