Timely reminder - water security
I noticed in a recent council update for the
Toowoomba region that our dam levels are at 59
per cent capacity. We may think that that is good.
There is still plenty of water left.
But, is it good? Each of Toowoomba’s three
dams need a flood event to fill them or a least give
them a major replenishment.
Still fresh in our minds are the 2011 and 2013
floods which is not long ago.
And we are already down to 59 per cent. In the
past, this region has experienced drier periods
over many years' duration.
Youth and the
job market
It is scary when you think one in 10 young
people in the Darling Downs and Maranoa want
a job but cannot get one.
Well, that is sadly the case as youth unemployment
continues to shoot up across Queensland.
The extent of Labor’s jobs crisis has been laid
bare, with new figures showing more than 600
youth jobs slashed from the Darling Downs and
Maranoa jobs market in the past year.
The latest ABS figures now show the region’s
youth unemployment rate at 8.8 per cent, after a
1.9 per cent rise in just the last 12 months.
Statewide, a total of 11,200 young people saw
their jobs disappear in the past year.
All while the Palaszczuk Labor Government
has been at the helm.
Queensland is leading the nation for all the
wrong reasons under Labor, with youth jobs
vanishing in 13 out of 19 regions in Queensland
last year.
These facts irrefutably show Labor’s jobs
budget is nothing more than a con job and
Queensland is being held back by a do-nothing
Labor government.
In contrast to Labor’s inaction, the LNP’s
$100 million Get Queensland Working program
will create up to 20,000 jobs for young Queenslanders,
and reverse Labor’s youth jobs trend by
reducing the cost of working for young apprentices
and offering financial incentives for businesses
who train and retain staff.
Only an LNP Government will create jobs
across Queensland, deliver the vital infrastructure
projects the Darling Downs and
Maranoa needs and Build a Better Queensland.
- Scott Emerson, LNP, Shadow Treasurer.
Toowoomba is one of the fastest growing cities
in Queensland with more and more houses and
businesses being hooked up to the same old water
supply - no change since Cressbrook dam was
built in 1983. How much bigger the population
now (and still growing.)
For many people who experienced the situation
before 2011, water restrictions are still fresh
in our minds.
In fact, it was a desperate time, facing the possibility
that Toowoomba could run out of water.
Unfortunately, we could easily face the same
scenario in the not so distant future.
Well, at least we have the Wivenhoe pipeline
to fall back on if and when needed. But is that
the complete answer? Will the supply always be
there if we need it?
Not to mention the exorbitant cost for the
power required to pump it up to Toowoomba
at ratepayer’s expense. A dam built on Emu
Creek could help, but once again, a flood would
be needed to fill it. Then there is recycled water
which also was considered a few years ago, but
which was one of the most divisive issues that
Toowoomba has ever experienced.
It is great that our region ins booming with
such potential for continuing development, but I
just hope that the powers that be are considering
the future of our water supply as seriously as they
are all other areas of development.
At the very least, individual households and
business owners, where possible, can at least be
taking steps even now to harvest their own rainwater
as an insurance for when the time will surely
come that we are faced with a critical shortage
of water once again. - Jim Watson, Highfields.
Dissatisfaction with bus timetable
With regard to the recent
change by Translink to the bus
services, may I bring to your attention
the neglectful frame of
mind by the company to Crows
Nest.
There is only the one example;
allow me now to present
it. Firstly, the 6.20am departure
is simply too early. The next is
10am which now takes 90 mins
to achieve its destination; the
bus terminal.
With regard of a return
trip, the next departure from
Toowoomba is an hour later
which would not be suitable in
the least after the initial lengthy
I am a six year resident of Highfields and have
noticed a large increase in the amount of rubbish
strewn on the footpaths and roadways of the Highfields
and Toowoomba district.
I do a walking litter run a few times a week and
have no problem collecting several large bags of
rubbish.
I have contacted the council in regards to trying
to organise volunteers to help out and clean
We have received so much
publicity recently about the proposed
Acland Stage 3 mining development
and local jobs.
However, it appears that no
one has mentioned the jobs that
could be created by the alternative
of new farms.
During the Land Court hearings
an experienced local farmer
was asked about the area
of about 10,000 ha acquired
through the sale of farms to New
Hope at Acland. He said that 20
good farmers could make a wonderful
living there for the rest of
Litter getting worse
Toowoomba but to no avail.oowoomba and districts
are becoming very unsightly. It seems to me
that people are just stepping over the problem.
I would like to put the problem out there and see
if we can form a group here in Highfields to get
the ball rolling.
circuitous bus ride.
The following bus to take
home would be the 3.30pm
which takes another 90 minutes
return journey, resulting in a trip
to and from Toowoomba taking
three hours and would mean a
total of six and half hours away
from home, irrespective of what
one had planned.
Previously, the same expedition
would take four hours; in
that a person would leave at 9am
and return home at 1pm - just in
time to make lunch.
The community has depended
on the same timetable for many
a commute over many a year but
Switch to NBN
their days and their children’s
days. Consider the employment
that could be created by the
farmers and all businesses that
serve them.
Consider how the aquifer
water supplies would be secured
for the future. This is in stark
contrast to the lowering of bore
water levels predicted across
more than 22,000 ha as a result
of proceeding with the Manning
I received a generic letter from Telstra advising
that the NBN was coming to Highfields in the near
future.
This has left me feeling a bit anxious considering
the stories I have read over the past 12
months which have been critical of the NBN, especially
in relation to the reported loss of speed
compared to existing ADSL connections, wild
fluctuations of speed with the NBN, poor installations
and inability to get the provider and/or NBN
Co to rectify the problems.
Our existing ADSL connection speed and reliability
have been great and I am anxious and fearful
that NBN will not maintain that performance.
Are there any households in the readership area
that have any good stories to tell about their NBN
switch? - Steve Kropp, Highfields - s.kropp@
Minister extends time to decide fate of Acland mining
The Ministerial decision on whether
to approve New Acland Coal Stage
Three, is being delayed as Dr Anthony
Lynham considers the detail of the
Land Court’s recommendation not to
allow further expansion.
Dr Lynham, the Minister for State
Dr ANTHONY LYNHAM - Minister for State Development, Resources and Mines
Development, Resources and Mines,
told a forum in Toowoomba last week
that he was extending the time for a
decision.
“I want to have time to consider the
Land Court’s lengthy and complex report,
and I want to make surethat I am
Not favouring one side or the other
fully informed on the issue.”
Dr Lynham said the Judicial Review
of the Land Court’s decision would
proceed.
This review was sought by the
New Hope Group following the Land
Court’s rejection of their application to
develop stage three of the New Acland
Coal mine.
The Minister refused to answer questions
on New Acland, saying there
were strong feelings on both sides of
the issue, and he did not want to be
seen as favouring one side or the other.
Oakey majority not heard in Acland decision - Chamber
The majority of people in Oakey need to be
heard on the New Acland Coal Stage Three project,
Chamber of Commerce president Andrew
Langton has told a business forum in Toowoomba.
Mr Langton said the Land Court decision,
which recommended against Stage Three progressing,
was a decision for the minority, and the
majority were not heard.
He said the majority of people in the Oakey district
understand how much it means for the continuation
of mining at New Acland.
“We at Oakey have been copping it left, right,
and centre.
"It’s a town that should be booming. But it’s
very frustrating.
“The majority of people in Oakey need to be
heard,” Mr Langton said.
Mr Langton was speaking at a Toowoomba
and Surat Basin Enterprise function at the Empire
Church to hear Dr Anthony Lynham, Minister for
State Development, Resources and Mines, in a series
for political speakers leading up to the next
State election.
Liberal leader Tim Nicholls spoke at a previous
function, and Pauline Hanson and other leaders
are to address a future function.
Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio told the forum
that should Acland Stage Three not proceed,
there would be significant challenges for Oakey.
“We need to get our heads around the situation
and support Oakey,” he said.
Cr Antonio said that in his 35 years in local
Government (Toowoomba and Millmerran), he
had never seen a place that has had “a hammering”
as Oakey has.
The list he was referring to includes events such
as the 2011 floods when more than 100 homes
were inundated, the contaminated water crisis
from fire fighting foam, the current business and
real estate difficulties, and the potential to lose
Acland stage three.
Cr Antonio urged Minister Lynham to consider
all matters as he decides on Acland Stage Three.
Cr Antonio said the 10 mayors from across
southern and western Queensland were backing
him in his support for Oakey.
He said the future of the western rail line also
needed to be considered.
The majority of freight to the Port of Brisbane
currently is coal from Acland, and he suggested
jobs, including those at the port, could be lost
without the continuation of Acland coal.
Member for Groom John McVeigh, Oakey Chamber of Commerce President
Andrew Langton, Jodi Keane-Venz, and Craig Commens.
Matt Lord, Oakey Soccer Club, Melissa Flynn, Oakey RSL, and Shane Williamson, Coops
sand blasting. Mr Williamson said that, should New Acland Stage 3 not go ahead, he and his
family including six children would have to seek employment in another mining town.
Paul Antonio hand delivered
a letter from the group
to Minister Lynham when
he visited Toowoomba last
week for the TSBE Political
Leaders series.
Cr Antonio said the
group understood the approval
process is complex
but wanted the Minister
to ensure a decision on
the future of the mine is
balanced, and takes into
account all relevant issues.
“A major economic contributor
to the Toowoomba
and south west Queensland
region, the mine currently
injects $300 million into
Queensland’s economy
and $100 million into the
Darling Downs economy
annually,” Cr Antonio said.
The 10 mayors believe
the impact of the mine
stretches much further than
the community of Oakey
and the Toowoomba Region,
and say they can’t
ignore that the economic
impact of the mine, should
the $850 million expansion
go ahead, is estimated at
$530 million a year.
“The operation employs
about 800 staff, 275 local
men and women and
507 contractors, as well as
providing for around 2300
indirect jobs,” Cr Antonio
said.
If the life of the mine
is extended until 2029, it
is projected that the site
would go on to provide
260 additional jobs during
construction and up to 435
jobs during the mine’s operational
phase.
“The loss of coal from
Acland on the rail freight
network would adversely
affect transport costs
for agricultural commodities
across south-west
Queensland via a loss of
cross subsidies, especially
grain, and ongoing rail
line maintenance costs at
a time when we should
be vigorously pursuing
efficiencies to grow our
world-class agricultural
offering,” Cr Antonio said.
“A rejection of the application
for the Stage 3 expansion
of the New Acland
mine would deliver a devastating
economic and
social blow to the community
of Oakey, which
is still reeling from the
much publicised impact
of ground-water contamination,
and to the broader
Queensland economy,” Cr
Antonio said.
• The leading article on page 3 of the High Country Herald last
CHRISTIAN COMMENT
When life bites you
By NOEL WILCOX
Pastor Highfields Baptist Church
Where do you go when life
bites you in the tail?
Just before Jesus was arrested
and subsequently was crucified,
He said to His followers:
"Strike the Shepherd and the
sheep of the flock will be scattered."
(Mark 14:27)
It happened just as Jesus had
prophesied with even one of his
closest followers, Peter, who
fled the scene when the inevitable
happened. He said that even
if everyone else was scattered,
he wouldn’t. But he did.
You can imagine Peter would
have slunk away like a chastised
dog with his tail between his
legs.
But there is more!
After Jesus was crucified, buried
and raised to life, He went
looking for Peter.
Why?
To restore him to fellowship.
To say, "Sure you failed, but failure
is not final."
Jesus described Himself as the
Good Shepherd, the One who
cares for His sheep.
Where do you go when life
bites you on the tail? If you are
one of His sheep, you go to your
Good Shepherd.
In Him you will find healing,
wholeness and protection.
Winter garden school
The 2017 Leafmore Winter Garden School was held at the City
Golf Club on June 14 and 15. Toowoomba supplied perfect weather
for the many attendees from South East Queensland, the west,
Northern New South Wales and South Australia. They were greeted
by the committee who had worked for 18 months to ensure they
had an enjoyable two days. The President's Room was decked out
in succulent arrangements and native flowers while the perimeter
was lined with stalls offering a wide variety of garden related or
fascinating objects and plants.
Guest presenter was Sophie Thomson who is a dynamic and
inspirational speaker. As dinner speaker, she helped us reach our
record attendance at Wednesday night's gathering. During the two
days attendees were entertained, educated and inspired by Sophie
and six other speakers on a great selection of subjects. Brian Sams,
Tim Rival, Leo O'Reilly, Debby Birach-Mayer, Anne Gibson and
Barbara Wickes gave practical presentations covering a wide variety
of interests.
Thanks to the generosity of individuals and businesses and hard
work by the committee members, Leafmore Garden Society managed
to raise over $3000 with multi draw raffles. These funds will
be shared between the Kidney Support Network and Understand
Alzheimers Educate Australia.
As chair of the Winter Garden School committee, I would like
to acknowledge the support of the Regional Council and thank
businesses and the loyal attendees of this, our ninth, Winter Garden
School. - Joan Cahill.
TRC budgets for pest management
Toowoomba Regional Council’s budget for the next 12 months
continues a program of conservation and pest management.
Council activities this year will continue to help both the council
and landowners gain ground in the battle against invasive weed
species and pests that can be damaging to bushland and productive
agricultural areas.
The council is continuing with a co-ordinated biosecurity surveillance
program from August 1, 2017 to July 30, 2018 with priority
surveillance areas identified at Gowrie Junction, Bowenville (north
of the Warrego Highway), Irvingdale, Upper Yarraman, NEWS Mt Tyson,
Rossvale, Purrawunda, Mt Irving, Westbrook, Wellcamp, Glenvale
and Scrubby Mountain.
Officers will continue to deliver baiting programs, firebreak maintenance
and prescribed burning programs, attend regional shows
and industry events to help increase awareness and ways in which
everyone can play a part in controlling invasive pests and weeds.
The meeting was attended by
While the reaction of Highfields
residents might have
“stunned” councillors and council
and their representative groups
are moving to seek a better outcome.
Jim O’Dea, President of Highfields
and District Business Connections
remained positive that
good outcomes could emerge
from the issue.
But he said there had to be an
acknowledgement that there are
deficiencies with the council’s
precinct plans.
He said it appeared that the
council acknowledged that its
approach to community consultation
was not adequate.
The HDBC submission would
identify where the council process
seemed inconsistent with
accepted approaches to community
consultation.
“It is unfortunate that some
council procedures were not best
Toowoomba council’s plans
for the centre of Highfields are
of vital interest to members of
Highfields and District Business
Connections which has had
a steering committee working
with local leaders on ideas for
a Highfields town centre since
July 2016.
The group is in the process of
developing a “community heart”
which will breathe life into
Highfields, for both business and
the community.
It is aware that Highfields
State Secondary College and
Mary MacKillop Catholic College
will soon be graduating
year 12 students, and without
business, industry and community
development, these students
will have limited opportunity
locally.
The group is also aware that
there is an opinion within Council
that Highfields will forever
be a “dormitory” suburb of
Toowoomba, without any opportunity
to provide a sustainable
community with employment
for the growing population of
Highfields, and the nearby communities
of Meringandan, Kleinton,
Highfields and District Business
an opportunity this morning,
Tuesday, July 4, to review and
approve the group’s submission
to the council due this Friday.
www.tr.qld.gov.au/budget
Delivering lifestyle - driving opportunity.
It gives me great pleasure to hand down the 2017 –
2018 financial year budget. The Toowoomba Region
is in the midst of a new chapter, we are maturing as
a community and Council has a responsibility to our
residents, now and well into the future.
Our task, as a local government, is to provide the
community’s essential services in an economically
responsible manner. Reflecting the size and robust
nature of our organisation and indeed our region, this
year’s budget totals $475 million dollars. This budget
is a culmination of almost 12 months of carefullyconsidered
decision making and I thank my fellow
Councillors and our staff for their attention and courage
in making decisions that are for the good of our region.
The liveability of our city and regional communities is
our richest tradition and will always be our key priority.
Council is focused on delivering on the lifestyle we
know and love here in our region.
Council budget increases rates and charges 3.41 per cent
Rates for Toowoomba urban
residents will increase by 3 per
cent in the coming financial
year, following Toowoomba Regional
Council’s Budget meeting
last week.
The net overall increase in
rates and charges will be 3.41
per cent, which Mayor Paul Antonio
said equated to just under
$2 a week, again for the average
urban property.
Cr Antonio announced a budget
of $475 million which he described
as a vote of confidence
in the region and in the financial
integrity of Toowoomba Regional
Council.
“Our region is booming,
thanks to significant external
investment, and while this new
regional infrastructure means
more maintenance and related
redevelopment work for Council,
I am proud of what we have
delivered in this budget, with a
considered increase in rates,” he
said.
Cr Antonio was also proud of
the enviable position the council
is in.
“The State Government’s
independent banker, the
Queensland Treasury Corporation,
continues to rate
Toowoomba Council as being in
a sound financial position with a
neutral outlook.”
However, Cr Antonio was
concerned that Federal funding
for local government was not
increasing. Indeed it was only 3
per cent of the tax take of which
the Federal Government got 83
per cent, and Cr Antonio said
local government was struggling
to provide necessary infrastructure
and services.
Finance portfolio leader Cr
Mike Williams said the Federal
funding was reducing and this
was a challenge. He said there
was a freeze on federal grants,
and reducing in real terms,
which could eventually result in
significant shortfalls and under
spending.
Cr Williams said a continuing
challenge for Toowoomba was
its 6500km of roads, the second
longest local roads system in
Queensland.
The Budget allocates $305
million for service delivery or
operational expenditure (including
the maintenance of existing
infrastructure), with this year’s
Infrastructure or capital investment
totalling $170 million.
“We are ensuring we continue
to upgrade our assets and build
our capacity to deliver services
of the highest possible standard,”
Cr Antonio said.
Around Groom with McVeigh
Over the last few months
one of the recurring issues in
the Highfields area has been
the proposed town plan for
the commercial area and how
it might affect the local community.
Whilst this is not a federal
government issue, as planning
falls under the Local Council
with oversight from the State
Government, there have been
many approaches from local
residents to myself and the
State Member for Toowoomba
North Trevor Watts MP.
I have met with residents
in my office, been to a number
of meetings also attended
by Trevor and Councillors at
the Highfields Secondary College,
and have had discussions
Together with Trevor Watts,
who I know is very keen to
ensure that Highfields has the
best possible results from any
planning regimes put in place
by Toowoomba Regional
Council, I have also met with
various community representative
groups from across the
Highfields region.
At all opportunities I have
encouraged local groups to
participate fully in Council
community consultation processes,
and shared the view
with Councillors that such
process must remain in place
to ensure proper input. I am
quite hopeful of sensible outcomes
to these processes.
I can certainly understand
why Highfields residents are
passionate about getting the
next stage of their growth
right - I spent a good part of
my life growing up in Highfields,
my wife and I raised
our family in Highfields when
they were younger and she has
also taught at a local school.
Highfields is an amazing
place. It is truly unique, but
it is growing. In national media
this week demographer
Bernard Salt stated Highfields
had grown 41% over the last
decade – making it one of the
fastest growing areas in the
nation.
I sometimes think we take
our great Darling Downs lifestyle
for granted, but then you
see the passion that residents
have right across our region it
becomes evident that Darling
Downs locals will always step
up to ensure our “piece of paradise”.
Until next month regards,
Ma Baker's Tonic - Just what the doctor ordered
Ma Baker's Tonic was performed earlier this year, and from my
experience, was a great production. Set in the 1920s in America, the
play takes place in a popular night club called Ritzys.
With a wide array of characters, from tough n rough gangsters, to
the dedicated ladies of the Purity League.
It was a very successful Crows Nest Arts Council production, but
it didn’t come easy. Lots of hard work was put in by the cast to learn
their lines, placement, actions and voices. Every Tuesday was given
up by these people for several months as they became more and
more in tune with their suave 1920 selves.
When the lines were coming into place, the songs and choreography
were next, this was after all a musical.
The gangsters tried their best but they suffered from chronic cases
of two left feet and bad timing, the Purity Ladies were running
out of luck as they wobbled around the stage in their high heels,
and I don't think I have to mention Ma Baker. It was of course
extremely fortunate that that was what they were meant to do.
The play was very well received by the audience on opening night
and it was nice to see that they weren’t afraid to have a bit of fun
themselves.
All in all, I believe that Ma Baker's Tonic was an extremely rewarding
experience for all people involved. - Quinn Macdonald.
Making of a journalist
QUINN MACDONALD
My name is Quinn Macdonald
and I am currently in my final
year of schooling at Crows Nest
State School. At Crows Nest
State School, Year 10 students
are required to participate in a
form of work experience for
five consecutive days, for career
studies.
This is to provide us with
knowledge of the work force
and a specific profession before
we begin work full time.
Students could choose any
form of Work Experience,
from work at a café, butcher
and tradie. One student this
year even managed to do work
experience for Sea World. .
My choice however, which I
believe should be quite clear,
was to work for the local paper.
I have always had a deep love
for journalism.
Rose forum
So, I believe I was quite lucky
when I was accepted for experience
by the High-Country Herald.
Working here has been an immensely
rewarding experience.
I have learned many things
from both people and books
alike (thank you Fairfax Media
style guide), and have enjoyed
every minute of it.
I have been instructed in all
aspects of journalism including
page design, encompassing details
such as columns, placement
of ads, how the paper itself is
produced and article structure.
I was taught in the ways of
graphic design and photography
(very fun), and had the chance
to write my own article for the
paper, including the designing of
this page.
I have thoroughly enjoyed
my time with the High Country
Herald, and if I had an idea of
journalism before, I believe that
it has become set in stone now.
I would like to take the time
to thank all the staff at the Herald,
office manager Mrs Ann Lomas,
graphic designer Mr Gavin
Ryan, receptionist Mrs Lyn Collier,
who also was kind enough
to drive me to and from work,
advertising sales manager Mrs
Tracey Gyde, and Mr Neil Lomas
editor of the High Country
Herald.
Thank you all for your support
and teaching me aspects of journalism
I never knew.
Challenging expedition to Vietnam
On September 14 this year I
will be participating in a world
challenge trek to Vietnam.
World Challenge is a charity organisation
that has been running
educational expeditions since
1987.
World Challenge aims to
broaden the minds of young
people and give them an experience
like no other.
The Challengers participate
in a team-building and skills
development program for nine
to 18 months before the expedition,
raising the funds, attending
a training expedition and helping
to plan the itinerary.
World Challenge expeditions
can send students to a variety
of places, depending solely on
what is available. Students can
be sent to Vietnam, Botswana,
Madagascar, Malawi, Morocco,
South Africa and Lesotho,
Tanzania, Zambia, Bolivia,
Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Ecuador,
Galapagos, Peru, China,
India, South Mongolia, Nepal,
India North, Sri Lanka, The
Silk Route, Borneo, Cambodia,
Java, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar,
Thailand, Vietnam and Fiji.
For the Vietnam expedition,
students must raise $5000 to
participate.
I managed to raise these funds
through kind donations from
family members but mainly
through the supper dance featuring
Cool Nights big band I held
earlier this year.
World Challenge Expeditions
are split into six phases, acclimatisation,
challenge, project,
rest and relaxation, cultural and
exploration, travel and rest.
World Challenge expeditions
are fully student led, meaning
on our day of arrival everything
is down to us.
We must finalise our bookings
for the night, food and transport.
The first place we go on the
expedition is Hoi An, home to a
UNESCO World Heritage site.
Hoi An has been the Vietnamese
trading hub for 2000 years.
While in Hoi An we may also
take a trip to the ancient Cham
ruins of My son, another UNE-
SCO World Heritage site.
By QUINN MACDONALD
The aim is to broaden the mind and have a life changing experience.
Country music and bush poets
A country music concert will be held on Saturday July 15, at the
Crows Nest Community and RSL Centre.
includes supper. Tickets can be purchased at the Chic Shoe Store,
Crows Nest, or at the concert door.
Tables of eight to 10 people can be reserved for pre-sold tickets
A bush poet’s breakfast will be held on the next morning Sunday,
July 16 at the Crows Nest Showgrounds starting at 8am.
of humorous and traditional Australian poetry. The cost is $10 and
includes a hot breakfast.
Camping is available at the showgrounds for anyone wanting to
make a weekend of it. Cost is $15 for powered sites and $10 unpowered.
While in Vietnam our group
will be taking several overnight
trains, these are a common sight
in Vietnam and are a main mode
of transport.
Our next stop is Hanoi, the
capital of Vietnam. Alive with
thrivng markets, street stalls
and people, Hanoi’s streets are
something of a blur. Hanoi is
where we will do our Community
Engagement Phase, the
Project.
This is the most rewarding
part of our expedition as we will
have a lasting impact on community
development and environmental
priorities.
During this phase we will
have to work hard and support
each other as a team in order to
complete our tasks.
Our contribution of hard work
and funds is highly valued by
the local community.
It is much more than a physical
contribution as it will have a
lasting impact on the community
and ourselves.
The next phase of our expedition
is the trek. Over the next
few days our group will trek
through the Sapa Valley, which
has picturesque view of rice
terraces, lush vegetation and
Mount Fanispan. During our
trek we have the unique opportunity
to experience hill tribe
life as we sleep at traditional
village homestays each night,
allowing us to learn more about
local culture, the region and its
people.
Next comes the rest and relaxation.
We will be travelling from
Hanoi to another of Vietnam's
UNESCO World Heritage sites,
one of Vietnams most stunning
natural wonders, Halon Bay.
Legend has it that a dragon
descended from heaven and
crashed into the sea, carving out
the many island coves and thousands
of limestone islets which
jut out imperiously from the emerald
waters.
Then it’s over.
We cram everything into our
rucksacks and head out to the
airport where we can sit back
and reflect on this life changing
experience.
Why are people unaware
that most of the
bacon they buy is imported?
Why are they not
concerned that their
buying habits are adversely
affecting Australian
pork producers,
including good,
efficient local producers?
More than twothirds
of bacon, about
70 per cent, sold in
Australia is made
from imported pork,
yet most consumers
remain unaware.
Australian Pork
that most people assume
that the tasty,
crispy bacon they’re
The right kind of
that nature intended,
according to Chris
Cameron who with
his daughter Catriona
Dale, is planning to
manufacture and market
compost with a special
ingredient.
For 50 years, Chris
has been experimenting
with composts and soil
minerals and microorganisms,
and the family
company, Platinum
Compost, is beginning
to achieve results.
At a presentation in
Toowoomba recently,
they spoke about the
use of their compost on
a chilli and capsicum
farm in the Bowen district,
where yields increased
200 percent in
the first year, and with
a saving of $600,000
in the second year because
the farmer was
able to double space the
crop rows, and without
any pest and disease
pressures.
“In a country
where we celebrate
our produce for its
quality and availability,
that’s shocking
for most people,” Mr
Spencer said.
“They can’t understand
why we’re
importing pork from
the other side of the
world.”
Last week was Australian
Bacon Week,
which was introduced
so Australians could
celebrate the very
best 100 per cent
Aussie bacon, but also
raise awareness of imports.
While pig farmers
have been fighting
imports in ham, bacon
and smallgoods
for years, Mr Spencer
division of Toowoomba
Catriona and
Chris outlined how the
business would operate,
along with financial information.
They said their compost
provided ingredients
for soil and plant
health, and the compost
making process took
just 28 days, compared
to five to 18 months for
some other processes.
Chris refused to give
details of his “secret” ingredients,
saying it had
taken him 50 years to
work it out, and he was
giving it to no one.
However, a basis of
the compost was ruminant
manure.
He told the audience
“Imported pork
is now making its
way onto consumers’
plates by way of ribs
and bellies which are
being heat treated and
sold into restaurants,”
he said.
These products are
from New Zealand
and contributed to a
major drop in prices
their pigs earlier this
year.
“For years we have
told consumers to
look for the Pork-
but now we also need
you to ask your waiter
said.
“We hope chefs and
restaurants will ditch
this shelf stable, sterilised
pork and go back
to serving fresh, local
pork.”
All fresh pork is
proudly Australian
and Mr Spencer said
consumers could
confidently continue
cooking their favourite
dishes at home, but
when it came to bacon,
ham and smallgoods
or prepared
meat cuts, consumers
needed to check the
Pony club conducts first event at
multipurpose equestrian arena
On Saturday June 3, Crows Nest Pony Club
held an ACA campdraft, which it hopes is the start
of something much bigger.
The ACA campdraft was the first event on the
newly constructed multipurpose equestrian arena.
The arena was the culmination of a dream, a lot
of planning, grant writing, preparation and hard
work but it all became a reality when the club was
successful on securing $86,806 from the Queensland
Government Get Playing Places and Spaces
funding program.
This, along with an additional $23,500 from
Toowoomba Regional Council for which the club
had to match half through its own contributions,
and $10,000 from Progressive Community Crows
Nest which exists due to the generosity of the
Crows Nest and Highfields Heritage Bank branches,
the project was able to come to fruition.
More than two-thirds of the project funding was
spent with local contractors, suppliers and businesses,
something the club is passionate about,
supporting the local community.
The club is excited about the new facility, which
measures 120 x 100m and was designed to enable
the participation of more than 20 different equestrian
pursuits with cattle handling facilities to enable
the operation of sports which involve cattle
and bison.
More than 155 competitors travelled from all
over South East Queensland, including Gold and
Sunshine Coast, Darling, Southern and Western
Downs, Brisbane and Burnett Regions.
More than 345 runs later, winners were determined
in the novice, junior and juvenile sections.
Revenue generated from the campdraft will be
used to pay for the construction of the new toilet
and shower block which has been made successful
again through funding from the Get Playing Places
and Spaces program and Toowoomba Regional
Council Sport and Recreation funding.
This new ablutions block will allow the club to
expand offering weekend schools, instructional
days, competitions and offer facilities to hire for
other equestrian clubs, community and sporting
groups.
In conjunction with the campdraft, the club also
held an official opening of the facility with Deb
Frecklington, Member for Nanango, Cr Paul Antonio,
Mayor of Toowoomba Regional Council,
Cr Geoff McDonald and Jay Wehlow from Sport
and Recreation Queensland Government present.
Cutting of the ribbon and unveiling of a plaque
took place between competitions.
Toowoomba Regional
Council has committed
more than $96 million
to sewerage and
water in the 2017/18
budget, an increase of
more than $8 million
compared to last year's
budget.
Each year, the council
pipes 13,000 megalitres
of water to more
than 60,000 connections
or water meters
across the region, and
the water network is
almost 2000 kilometres
long.
There are 19 major
water, wastewater and
waste projects in the
2017/18 budget including
$73.2 million
in water infrastructure
and operations.
The most significant
water infrastructure
project is the upgrade
of the Perseverance
Dam pump station.
The council has committed
$3 million to
upgrade and replace
the pumps and switchboards
at Perseverance
Dam, the second largest
and second oldest
storage dam in the
Toowoomba region.
The council will invest
$2.9 million into upgrading
and replacing
water mains including
Campbell Street in
Oakey, $500,000, Mort
Street in Toowoomba
$400,000, and Campbell
Street, Toowoomba
$300,000.
The completion of
the trunk water main
network in Hursley
Road and Toowoomba
Cecil Plains Road from
Greenwattle Street to
O'Mara Road is to be
completed, shoring up
supply to the burgeoning
Toowoomba Enterprise
Hub. Trunk water
mains in Nass and
Wirth Roads are another
major project, at a
cost of $2.1 million.
The council will also
undertake community
consultation and start
works to connect the
community of Hodgson
Vale to the Toowoomba
supply.
The council has committed
$2.3 million
to the Bedford Street
landfill vertical expansion
(stage 1).
Budget allocates $96m to water and waste
This 20-year project
will have four stages
and will cater to the
future waste disposal
needs of the region.
This project will add
airspace to the existing
landfill cell and extend
the life of the facility
a further four to five
years based on current
waste disposal levels.
Small landfills are
being replaced in the
strategic network
of transfer facilities
throughout the region.
These facilities have
been designed to be
safer and have significant
environmental
benefits over the traditional
small rural landfills.
The council has committed
$8.5 million for
the upgrade from landfill
to transfer facility
at Kleinton, Cooyar,
Evergreen and Cecil
Plains (Stage 1).
These improvements
will provide greater
opportunities for recycling
and resource
recovery, whilst also
enhancing management
of general waste.
Matthew Lewis, Isaak Brew, Ian Wickham,
Steve Donald, Shamus Garmany, Lucy Thompson,
time off their records. There were also a few close
calls, so we are hopeful to see even more titles fall
at July pacer week, July 29.
We also celebrated the outstanding achievement
of Mark Cameron-Davies, who reached his milestone
100 parkruns. His commitment to parkrun
is phenomenal and we are always proud to have a
Highfields member tick over to their next achievement.
We also recognised Annemarie Lyons as
our Parkrunner of the Month for her commitment
and the positive energy that she brings to Kratzke
Oval.
We also welcomed in 10 newcomers to our
course, and received feedback from one parkrun
Stargazer that we are the friendliest people yet.
Thank you to all our parkrunners, and especially
our volunteers Jason Mears, Steve Chapman, Muriel
Garrod, Sue O’Connell, Alison Towner, Martin
making our newbies feel welcome. A huge thanks
too to our three pacers for getting involved and
