Council may have to pump water from Wivenhoe
Residents urged to minimise water use
The Toowoomba Region faces the prospect of
having to pump water from Wivenhoe Dam for the
first time if adequate rain does not soon fall.
The Toowoomba Regional Council established
a pump station at Wivenhoe Dam about 2010, but
apart from short pumping runs for testing and
maintenance, it has not yet supplied water for the
region’s regular water needs.
This followed a failed attempt by the previous
Toowoomba City Council to recycle water for human
consumption.
The council has been told that its three dams,
Cressbrook, Perseverance and Cooby were at just
41.9 per cent useable capacity in November.
The council has a policy that when its water
reserves in the dams drop to 40 per cent, a pumping
program from Wivenhoe Dam on the Brisbane River
starts.
In November, Cressbrook Dam was at 45.7 per
cent useable capacity, Perseverance Dam was at 33.1
per cent capacity, and Cooby Dam was at 38.6 per
cent useable capacity, a total useable capacity of 41.9
per cent.
Without substantial rainfall, the council expects to
reach the dam storage level to start pumping from
Wivenhoe Dam by early to mid-2019.
All residents are being urged to minimise water
usage to preserve existing supplies.
Private bore water users are also requested
to reduce usage where possible as aquifer levels
throughout the region are stressed.
Toowoomba has a four tier system of water
restrictions - permanent conservation measures,
medium level, high level, and extreme level
restrictions.
Each level is triggered when a water supply falls to
a certain capacity.
Towns taking water from the Toowoomba bulk
supply are on permanent conservation measures
where there are minor restrictions.
However, towns which take water from bores
to the south and southwest of Toowoomba are on
medium level restrictions.
