Radici Film is part of the large Radici S.p.A. corporation that has many varied interests including
fibres, fabrics, chemicals, engineering, looms, plastics and packaging. Compared with some of its
major counterparts in Europe, it entered the bi-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film sector relatively late
with its first line being installed in 1991, with an original capacity of just 5,000 tonnes. Nevertheless,
since then it has developed and grown to become a significant player on the European scene with a
capacity at its Italian plant of 75,000 tonnes/year.
The group expanded internationally in May 2001 when it acquired from the Hungarian group TVK, its
Biafol BOPP film operation based at Tiszaújváros. This marked the first manufacturing entrée by a
West European BOPP film producer into the evolving Central and East European region. The primary
objective was to expand the presence of the Radici Film Group in European markets. Only two years
previously, Biafol had increased their production capacity to 23,000 tonnes through the addition of a
new Brückner line. Interestingly, the development work, construction, design, operation and sales with
respect to this line were done in conjunction with Mobil Plastics Europe. The combined capacity of the
two sites is now nearly 100,000 tonnes making it the second largest BOPP film producer in Europe
after ExxonMobil.
The company is able to offer plain, coextruded and pearlised films from its two sites and supplies for
a broad range of applications including packaging for various foods and tobacco.
Radici Film is obviously focusing on the countries of Central and Eastern Europe as a key part of its
strategy and it will be interesting to see how this evolves given the rapidly developing packaging needs
of the region.
