Our sister paper, The Northbrook Tower, was of course reporting the news. While my 2-year-old son was sleeping in his bedroom only feet away, in my role as managing editor, I was working with The Tower on getting the story out. Early on, we realized Lambert lived in Highland Park, so that brought another one of our publications into the loop. Lambert, 34, was killed on duty responding to a traffic crash involving multiple cars in the northbound lanes of I-294 near Willow Road. “He sees a three-vehicle crash, he positions his vehicle in the left-hand lanes to save the lives of those people in the crash,” said Leo Schmitz, director of the Illinois State Police. “He was struck and lost his life while doing that.” As we reported, Lambert was on his way home to Highland Park to be with his wife and 1-yearold daughter. Hearing this part really hit home for me. Every day, I look forward to leaving work and driving home to see my wife and kid. In a former life, I dreamed of being a police officer, but the dangers of the profession eventually scared me away. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and the entire ISP. Rest in peace Trooper Lambert,” tweeted out the Wilmette Police Department. As I wipe the tears from my eyes, my heart goes out to Lambert’s family. Regina Dominican posted this photo on Jan. 10 with the caption: “Congrats to junior Kristen O’Connor for bowling a turkey this week against Resurrection. First, they were skeptical of the non-local promoters with their Hollywood connections. Second, they were opposed to high rise buildings as a general principle and didn’t want them to gain a foothold along the North Shore. And third, the Club was just one piece of what they believed was a plan to over-develop No Man’s Land. But they couldn’t stop the Club. It opened its beach-level facilities in 1927 and its second-floor facilities in 1928. It attracted more than 500 members from the North Shore and beyond and seemed destined for success. Then, in October 1929, the stock market crashed and the Great Depression followed. Members were able to resign without financial penalty. They did. Phase 2 was cancelled. The Club fell into receivership in 1933. Efforts to save it failed. The receiver leased the clubhouse to tenants who briefly operated a semi-public dining/dancing venue. In 1939, Wilmette annexed No Man’s Land and acquired the right to govern the area. The annexation was only temporary, though, because the Illinois Supreme Court ruled in 1940 that the 1939 law authorizing the annexation was unconstitutional. It wasn’t until 1942 that a lawful annexation was accomplished. During the temporary annexation, the receiver leased the clubhouse to tenants who advertised Keno games on Wednesday nights. The advertisement came to the attention of Wilmette Police Chief Cloyd McGuire, who “mobilized his entire force of 24 me,n”, deputized eight Legionnaires, and rented Indian Hill Country Club’s bus. McGuire’s raiders swooped into the building on December 27 and arrested 60 people — proprietors, employees, and mostly female patrons from Chicago. One woman shouted, “Suburbanites! Why don’t you raid the church socials?” All arrestees were bused to the Village Hall, charged with illegal gambling, released on bond, and eventually fined. This raid was the final blow. Vista del Lago fell into ruin and became an eyesore on Wilmette’s Lakefront. Finally, in 1962, the remnants were bulldozed, and a ten-story co-op was built on the site.
