10 Questions
with Lauren Maischoss
Lauren Maischoss, 17, is
a senior who swims and
plays water polo at Malibu
High School.
What do you enjoy
about the game of
water polo?
For me, water polo is a
stress reliever. After school,
I love getting in the water
to play around and talk with
my friends. But it is also a
very aggressive game that
takes collaboration with
your teammates. And you
need to be close with your
team in order to succeed in
this game, I think.
How difficult was it to
start the season with
so little practice time?
It was really hard for a lot
of reasons. First, personally
I had expectations that this
year was going to be really
great, especially for all of
our seniors. But when we
all went through the tragic
time of the fires it kind of
put the season down the
list of priorities. But during
that time we all grew
closer as a team, which has
definitely helped us start
our season, even if it was
a little late compared to the
other teams.
You lost a lot of the
top players from last
season. Have you as a
senior tried to take on
a leadership role?

I try to just get everyone
to play together. This year,
we have a lot seniors and
a lot of freshman, but very
few sophomores and juniors
so there is a big divide
between JV and varsity. I
do my best to get everyone
to play together and when
varsity practices with JV I
always try to get the upperclassmen
to help teach the
younger players.
In what area have you
most improved from
freshman year until
now?
Definitely my defense.
I have gotten a lot smarter
about when to be aggressive
and when to hold back
a little.
What are your goals
this season?
At this point, just to qualify
for CIF. Our league is
very tiny and our team had
the disadvantage of starting
late and not having a pool,
making it very challenging
for us to qualify this year.
But I believe our team can
put in the effort and win the
games we need to win.
Who has the best
nickname on the team?
Probably our coach,
Hayden [Goldberg]. We
call him coachpolo12.
What are your hobbies
outside of polo?
I love to hang out with
my friends and watch Netflix
if I ever have free time.
What are your plans
for after high school?
I am going to attend a
four-year college and study
either computer science or
some type of engineering.
My top school is UC San
Diego.
What would your
dream job be?
A programmer at Google.
If you could have one
superpower, what
would it be and why?
Probably to read people’s
minds. I think it is really interesting
how other people
think and interact.

Despite falling behind
with 25-18, 25-19 first
and second set losses, the
Waves rallied back to take
the third and fourth sets
with 26-24 and 25-18 victories.
With the momentum
in its side of the court, Pepperdine
continued en route
to a 15-13 win and the fiveset
victory.
In the fifth and final set,
each side came out swinging
and although Pepperdine
took the first lead, the
Gauchos rallied to reach
the eight-point mark first.
The Waves came back to
amass a three-point advantage
over the Gauchos at
12-9 with a block collaboration
from Clay Carr and
David Wieczorek.
After the Waves pulled
ahead 14-11, UCSB started
to close the gap and came
within one at the 14-13
mark. After a Pepperdine
timeout, the Waves came
out and Michael Wexter
sealed the deal with his
16th kill of the match to secure
the 15-13 set win and a
reverse sweep for his team.
Robert Mullahey came
in off the bench to amass
a double-double with 43
assists and 12 digs, while
Wexter, Wieczorek and Kaleb
Denmark led the squad
with 16, 14 and 14 kills, respectively.
