What media do you work
with the most?
I work with silver.
When you say you work
with silver, what exactly
does that mean?
Back in the 15-1600s —
off the top of my head, I
might be off by a hundred
years — I think that graphite
was developed in the 16th
century, before graphite,
your master artists, and I’m
sure you’ve seen them when
you look at Leonardo da
Vinci and [Albrecht] Durer
and some of their drawings,
they were drawing with silver.
They didn’t have graphite
at that time... [They] just
had silver wire.
How did you get into art?
I was 35, and I’d always
been into fitness but I had
to have surgery, so I said,
“well, what can I do while
Ted Overcash primarily draws using silver.
I’m healing up?” So I started
drawing, and that’s kind of
how I got started.
Do you do art full time or is
it more of a hobby?
It’s just a hobby.
What is the toughest part of
doing art for you?
The toughest part is deciding
what I want to draw next.
Something that I should just
be doing all the time, I waste
more time, or spend more
time jumping from topic to
topic to see which one I really
want to do.
What are your future goals
for your art?
My future goals are to just
improve my skill and improve
my drawing. I haven’t painted
in decades. And just to do better
[at] silver drawing.
Will you do that just by
doing more or are you going
to take classes?
No, just kind of like onthe-job
training, just drawing
and practicing and hoping
that over a period of time
I can see a slight improvement
in what I’ve done previously.
How would you describe
your personal artistic
style?
Silver wouldn’t lend itself
too well to abstract, [so] I’m
into more realism, representational
art.
Where do you get your
inspiration from?
Oh, the outdoors. Anything
from flowers, to animals,
to barns, cattle.
What is your favorite part
of doing art?
My favorite part is, if I’m

doing a drawing, that as I’m
finishing I actually like it.
Do you like it every time?
No, no... Sometimes if I’m
on a roll, maybe I’ll do a few
drawings in a row and then
I’ll do something that doesn’t
turn out too good, it kind of
kills my confidence for a
while and I have to regroup
and try to not let it affect me
and just go back to take up
where I left off.
Do you like to sit down and
finish a piece at one time
or does it take you a few
days?
It depends on what I’m
doing. Silver is a slow process
and most of my silver
drawings I couldn’t sit down
long enough in one day to
finish... I can do a part of it,
but usually it’ll take me several
days.
What’s your favorite piece/
pieces you’ve created?
I’m not sure, to be honest
with you. I did a water lily
that’s probably one of my
favorites.
