Esther is affected by leprosy and lives in a leprosy 

community in India. She received treatment and 

is cured, but the disease has left her with visible 

impairment – she has bent fingers. 

She learned how to weave in the Bethany 

rehabilitation unit that used to run in a converted 

chicken shed. She provided work for the women in 

a community where most of the men went begging 

for months at a time across India. The weaving 

unit has grown and now employs young women 

from the daughters of Esther’s generation.

Safe Water projects in Nepal are 

saving lives – Thanks to you. 

Poor sanitation leads to increased risk 

of health issues. Diseases like leprosy 

thrive in such conditions. In Nepal, 

there is still no reliable water supply in 

many communities.

construction of universally accessible 

water and sanitation facilities. The 

‘Water And Sanitation Hygiene’ (WASH)

“Before we knew nothing about WASH 

and many children would die. Now we 

have learned about the importance of

not been any recent cases of diarrhoea

Bharat is 59 and lives with his wife Hasina in 

Nepal. When he was diagnosed with leprosy, 

he was kicked out of his village. Rejected by 

his family and living in poverty, life was hard 

for Bharat. After years of struggling, he finally 

received treatment for his leprosy at The 

Leprosy Mission Anandaban Hospital. 

He then joined Nepal Leprosy Trust and 

works in the leather workshop. He helps his 

colleagues to make leather bags and other 

handcrafted items. 

Although Bharat has impairments to his hand 

and leg, he works hard and earns enough to 

provide for his family members and to educate 

his children.

Thanks to your Support 

Kashi has been caring for others affected by 

leprosy for nearly 30 years at The Leprosy Mission 

Anandaban Hospital in Nepal. Now in charge of the 

Self Care Unit at the hospital, Kashi is regarded 

with much love and respect and the patients 

cannot speak highly enough of him. 

“He is not disgusted by our sores”; “he is willing to 

touch us”; are common comments from those who 

come to spend time at the unit. He is someone who 

is willing to take care of them, and does not turn 

away at the sight of weeping ulcers. He therefore 

brings both comfort and hope to the patients. 

Kashi’s compassion was born out of his own 

suffering when he was diagnosed with leprosy at 

the age of seven. Leprosy was a feared disease, 

and others in his village suffered from it, it was 

seen as a ‘curse from the gods’. 

What followed was a long period of exclusion 

and rejection. Kashi was banned from the house 

and forced to live in the animal shed. He was not 

allowed to go to school or to play with the other 

children. 

It was a very lonely and distressing time for a 

young child. He suffered complications from 

leprosy and he was referred to The Leprosy 

Mission’s Anandaban Hospital for treatment. His 

hand had become so clawed he received surgery 

which would allow him to open and close his 

fingers again. 

Kashi wanted to help other leprosy-affected 

people in practical ways. So he started cleaning 

and bandaging the wounds of people affected 

by leprosy. Kashi quickly became an expert, 

bandaging the wounds in such a way that the 

dressings never seemed to come off. 

Kashi loved the work so much the hospital 

eventually offered him a position there. He now 

teaches them how to properly care for their hands, 

feet and face. Kashi is a humble man, and is simply 

pleased that he is able to ‘extend the hand of help 

and friendship’ to those suffering like he once did. 

“It is an amazing thing and a blessing that I am able 

to work with these leprosy patients. I am happy that 

I am able to touch their hearts.”

Do you remember Maimuna in Nigeria? 

She featured in our Summer Autumn Catalogue 

12 months ago. She has just given birth to a son. 

His name is ‘Abubakar’, after his father. What a 

blessing! 

Philip and Paul from The Leprosy Mission 

Australia office met up with Maimuna on their 

recent trip to Nigeria. The ulcer on her left foot 

has healed now too. She has been diligent with the 

self-care treatment she was taught. 

Thanks to your support! 

She is still enjoying using the new prosthetic leg 

you provided for her through The Leprosy Mission 

at the Orthopaedic workshop in Minna. You may 

recall her previous one was damaged fleeing 

armed bandits. 

Her family is also benefiting because she is part of 

a Leprosy Mission Self-Help Group. Each of the 30 

members contributes money which is then shared 

as a low interest loan between group members. 

Maimuna joined the group after her first husband 

was killed during an attack by armed bandits on 

her home village. She was able to purchase a goat 

and it gave birth to 4 kids! Maimuna reared them 

and sold them for a profit. 

Maimuna received protective shoes, 

a prosthetic leg and self-care 

training – all thanks to you! And now 

she has even more to celebrate... 

With this, she purchased grain. She has now even 

paid off her loan! 

Maimuna told us, “Being part of The Leprosy 

Mission Self-Help Group has meant I was able to 

support my five children through goat-rearing after 

my (first) husband was killed”. Thank you for your 

support. 

Maimuna and her husband have decided they will 

not return to her village permanently. It is too 

dangerous. Recently armed bandits attacked again, 

and she lost her uncle and cousin. Now 8 of her 

family members have died through these attacks. 

Still, some of her family remain there. 

Despite this, Maimuna counts her blessings. Her 

message to you was; “Thank you for your continued 

support of The Leprosy Mission’s work here in 

Zamfara. May God continue to encourage you, and 

my prayers are with you.”

Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, provides 

treatment and comprehensive rehabilitation 

services for leprosy patients with physical 

disabilities, in both hospital- and community 

based projects. 

Their goal is that patients will be empowered 

to have a quality of life and acceptance in their 

own homes and communities, achieving their 

maximum potential in mobility, independent 

living, productivity and self-support. 

Vocational training is a big part of 

rehabilitation which empowers patients to 

be more self-supporting so they can return 

to their community and participate actively. 

McKean handcrafts and its vocational training 

team help the patients market their products 

and develop a sustainable livelihood.

Kanchanjangha Tea Estate (KTE) is located in a 

remote village of Panchthar district of Eastern 

Nepal. The tea estate was started on just 1 

hectare of land but now expands to 95 hectares, 

with the objective to grow organic produce and 

share its benefits within the community. 

Once barren, the land is now fully utilised with 

plantings of tea, coffee, spices, herbs, oranges, 

and other citrus fruits using traditional and 

purely organic principles. KTE has assisted 469 

area farmers to achieve organic certification. 

This means that they can join the estate in 

selling their green leaves. 

Proceeds provide a scholarship program 

support to all farmers’ children for full 

secondary education. KTE’s projects are aimed
