Nepal recently, he met Maya and her daughter
Mamata.
Maya felt lost and hopeless when she first

Kanchanjangha Tea Estate (KTE) is located in a
remote village of Panchthar district of Eastern
Nepal. The tea estate was started on just 1
hectare of land but now expands to 95 hectares,
with the objective to grow organic produce and
share its benefits within the community.
Once barren, the land is now fully utilised with
plantings of tea, coffee, spices, herbs, oranges,
and other citrus fruits using traditional and
purely organic principles. KTE has assisted 469
area farmers to achieve organic certification.
This means that they can join the estate in
selling their green leaves.
Proceeds provide a scholarship program
support to all farmers’ children for full
secondary education. KTE’s projects are aimed
at improving the quality of life of the farmers on
the estate and surrounding areas.

Thanks to people like you,
Gaganand is back to being
his playful happy self.
For the 13-year-old Gaganand, life was
all about playing with friends. He loved
playing cricket. But one day, two years
ago, all this came to an abrupt end.
His mother, Savita, noticed a discoloured
patch on his body. As there was no
sensation on the patch, she thought
something was amiss. She took him to
the local doctor, who diagnosed him with
leprosy.
Savita belongs to a conservative
community in Buldhana district of
Maharashtra. People in her community
have misconceptions about the disease.
She knows people with leprosy suffer
from stigma.
She saw people shunning those affected
by leprosy and feared the same for her
son. Their social standing was under
threat if people knew that Gaganand is
affected by leprosy. They’d be boycotted.
So, Savita kept her son’s leprosy a secret.
She asked her son not to visit his friends
or play with them.
On that day Gaganand’s cheerful nature
came to an abrupt end. He turned into an
‘introverted loner’.
Savita continued discreet treatment of
her son. But after a year of medication,
Gaganand lost sensation in his hand and
feet. Also, fingers of his left hand clawed
(These are complications of leprosy.

They happen when the bacterium that
causes the disease attacks nerves in the
legs and hands). The family could no
longer hide his leprosy. Their worst fear
came true – they faced alienation in the
community. Because of his disability,
Gaganand was forced to drop out of
school.
“People stopped visiting our house. They
did not want to associate with us. My
son was not allowed to play with other
children. I worried about him and my
three daughters,” says a shaken Savita.
Then great news! They heard about free
reconstructive surgery at The Leprosy
Mission hospital in Kothara. It is 150km
from their village. Savita was hopeful.
She heard that leprosy-related
deformities in hands, legs, and eyes could
be corrected. And patients could lead a
normal life.
Admitted to hospital, Gaganand had the
surgery. He is now counting the days until
he can go back to school.
Gaganand will be free from his disability
and will be able to pursue his studies
and make the most out of his life.

For Maya it proved an invaluable means of
making clothes to sell so she could earn a
living.
I first met Maya several years ago at the
Leprosy Mission Anandaban Hospital,
Nepal. There amongst the friendly
chatter, sitting apart from everyone else,
was Maya. She seemed lost, disengaged
from others, and burdened by what life
had dealt her. I soon discovered why.
Maya had undergone surgery to correct
the clawing in her leprosy affected
hands, but they were still weak and she
was having trouble gripping, or carrying
out even simple everyday chores. Her
treatment also meant she had spent
weeks away from her family.
Without the use of her hands, Maya knew
she would not be able to earn a living.
She felt destined to live a life of poverty;
destitute, hopeless and lost. It was truly
heartbreaking to see first-hand.
Now what a transformation we see in
her. She was still reserved, but now full
of smiles. She also had a beautiful five
year-old daughter. A sewing machine
through The Leprosy Mission create an
opportunity for her to help support her
new family.
It was so lovely to see how much Maya’s
situation had improved, and it really
underlined to me the amazing work that
you make possible every day though
giving Gifts of Love.

Thanks to you Lidia and
her sister Liliana are
cured from leprosy!
17 year old Liliana (pictured right) lives
with her mother and 8 other siblings in
Timor Leste. Their father passed away
some time ago. They didn’t know about
leprosy. So when they had skin patches
they didn’t know what it was.
Until Leprosy Mission health workers
visited their house. It was only then
Liliana and her sister were both diagnosed
with leprosy. The health workers gave
them Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) which
they have been taking for five months
now.
Usually over the course of 12 months, a
person affected by leprosy can be cured.
In fact, within 48 hours of beginning the
treatment they are no longer infectious
and pose no threat of passing on the
disease to those around them.
But Lidia experienced leprosy reaction. So
she had to take the steroid Prednisone as
well as MDT.
“I felt sad because I didn’t think that
we could get leprosy”, said Lidia. “I
thought it was a very bad disease. But
the doctor told us that we needed to take
medication or we would get a disability.
When I first started the treatment I felt
very dizzy and I started vomiting. I was
admitted to hospital for a week, but then
I got used to the medication. Now, thanks
to the treatment my nodules are gone,
but my skin is still dark from the MDT.”
“I stopped going to school last year
because I felt unwell,” added Liliana. “I
had swelling in my face and in my arms
and legs. I am getting better now and I
want to go back to school when I am well
again.”
Lidia is studying at University to become a
teacher. “I want to learn and I want to be
a teacher so I can have a better life.”
Liliana received further support with
food and school tuition. Leprosy Mission
workers also met with her teacher and
explained leprosy and that Liliana was not
contagious.

it and invite people over for a night of coffee,
desserts and shopping from the goods you
have on display. You can commit to as many

affected by leprosy through The Leprosy

Your Gifts of Love

successful social
enterprise
In Kamalpur Nepal individuals used to
milk their buffaloes and sell it at their
local market. But even if they were able
to sell the milk, the money was never
enough to last.
Now they sell their milk through their
Self-Help Group, and more people are
earning an income.
The Kamalpur Self-Help Group set up
a scheme to provide small loans at a
small interest rate. 85 members have
already received a small loan from the
profits made through the milk scheme.
Almost all repay on time, with only a few
requiring a delayed repayment until their
crop yields.
They now buy people’s milk for 55 NPR/
litre, which is much better than the rate
they used to get. They sell that same
litre of milk in town at 70 NPR/litre. Plus
they can transport more to market using
a three wheel vehicle. This has increased
their profits and everyone benefits even
more.
“After we initiated the milk scheme,
we realised how profitable it was.” says
Umesh, Chairman of the Disabled Persons
Organisation that coordinates the group.
“We’re now compelled to keep a balance
of profit to ensure we can all keep earning
an income.”
“I can pay my children’s school fees now
for example, and I’ve even been able to
save enough income to build my own
house. This would not have been possible
before.” he added.
They have expanded the business with
the addition of a cooling machine to
increase sales. “We’ve set up a supply
and storage centre for selling other
agricultural products.
This will benefit the whole community,
as people will no longer have to travel a
long way to get seeds for farming.”
The group expect up to 300 families will
make use of this social enterprise.
