Thanks to you Lidia and
her sister Liliana are
cured from leprosy!
17 year old Liliana (pictured right) lives
with her mother and 8 other siblings in
Timor Leste. Their father passed away
some time ago. They didn’t know about
leprosy. So when they had skin patches
they didn’t know what it was.
Until Leprosy Mission health workers
visited their house. It was only then
Liliana and her sister were both diagnosed
with leprosy. The health workers gave
them Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) which
they have been taking for five months
now.
Usually over the course of 12 months, a
person affected by leprosy can be cured.
In fact, within 48 hours of beginning the
treatment they are no longer infectious
and pose no threat of passing on the
disease to those around them.
But Lidia experienced leprosy reaction. So
she had to take the steroid Prednisone as
well as MDT.
“I felt sad because I didn’t think that
we could get leprosy”, said Lidia. “I
thought it was a very bad disease. But
the doctor told us that we needed to take
medication or we would get a disability.
When I first started the treatment I felt
very dizzy and I started vomiting. I was
admitted to hospital for a week, but then
I got used to the medication. Now, thanks
to the treatment my nodules are gone,
but my skin is still dark from the MDT.”
“I stopped going to school last year
because I felt unwell,” added Liliana. “I
had swelling in my face and in my arms
and legs. I am getting better now and I
want to go back to school when I am well
again.”
Lidia is studying at University to become a
teacher. “I want to learn and I want to be
a teacher so I can have a better life.”
Liliana received further support with
food and school tuition. Leprosy Mission
workers also met with her teacher and
explained leprosy and that Liliana was not
contagious.
