In regard to coal seam 

gas industry the water 

losses and despoiling of 

the aquifers is incalculable. 

The Independent Expert 

Panel for Mining was 

set up to advise government 

on only two of the 

many mines in NSW; the 

Metropolitan and Dendrobium 

coal mines. 

Their report acknowledges 

damage and potential 

damage occurring 

at the two mines and 

some CSG drilling sites. 

To allow this long-term 

damage to our water and 

agriculture essentials at a 

time when renewable are 

cheaper and can generate 

many economic opportunities 

is unbelievable. 

The reports from the 

advisory committee and 

WaterNSW say very explicitly 

they are worried. 

They put their hope on 

the miners’ incremental, 

rather than rapid, advancement 

into sensitive 

areas of Sydney’s water 

catchment areas as well 

as tougher and tougher 

regulations. 

If there is one important 

thing, we learned from 

the results of the two 

Royal Commissions last 

year it was that the board 

and executives of large 

organisations don’t care 

about the law; only about 

profit and their bonuses 

in one case and power in 

the other, as long as they 

are not caught. 

I think it is likely that 

the regulations are strong 

enough. But we need direct 

oversight by a reasonably 

financed and appropriately 

staffed mining 

regulating department to 

look at all mining activity. 

If mining declines then 

so will jobs in mining 

areas. We need people

Save Macquarie Ice Rink!

A proposed demolition of Macquarie 

Ice Rink has been put on ice thanks to 

an eleventh hour intervention by Ryde 

MP Victor Dominello, backed by The 

Weekly Times. 

The iconic forty year old ice rink was last 

week given 12 months to close by Macquarie 

Shopping Centre owner AMP so it 

could be bulldozed to make way for a plaza, 

retail shops and a 480 spot car park. 

By the weekend, Mr Dominello had gathered 

more than 20,000 signatures for a 

Save The Ice Rink petition, which prompted 

AMP to back down and announce a 

freeze on the development, asking the City 

of Ryde to pause a development application 

to allow for further community consultation. 

The Managing Director of AMP Capital 

Shopping Centres, Mark Kirkland, said it 

had listened to the community. 

“We acknowledge the outpouring of support 

for the ice rink and the special place it 

has,” he said. 

“While we had undertaken research with 

a broad segment of the community in 

drafting the proposed plans, it is clear that 

we need to take more time to engage with 

those who love the centre and incorporate 

their feedback into the next stage of the 

development.” 

Public outcry 

Mr Dominello described the community 

outcry – backed by The Weekly Times - as 

overwhelming. 

“I think AMP has made a responsible decision 

to pause the application to hopefully 

put in a proposal that includes the ice rink.” 

“If AMP consults with the community in 

the same way I consulted with the community 

as to whether they want the ice rink or 

not, I know what the community is going to 

overwhelmingly say ... keep the ice rink !” 

Macquarie Ice Rink Managing Director Dr 

Frank Gregg told The Weekly Times that 

the proposed demolition of the ice rink 

came as a “complete shock” and there is 

still a fight ahead to save it. 

“To give you some idea about how devastating 

this is, a little girl here went hysterical 

when she heard we were going to 

close and we rushed out thinking she had 

suffered an accident,” he said. 

“This ice rink means at lot to everyone in

In 2014, the NSW Government 

rezoned this site as part of its

Ryde opposed this rezoning,

Celebrate Australia Day at 

North Ryde Common 

The North Ryde Common 

will be the place to be this 

Saturday for the City of Ryde’s 

Australia Day concert. 

The family concert will feature 

some terrific entertainment 

throughout the late afternoon 

and evening, with Australia’s 

Got Talent finalist Jay Parrino 

performing alongside the Ozzy 

Iconics, as well a set from the 

JC All-Stars. The Battle of the 

Bands competition also returns 

after its popular debut last year. 

There will also be rides, sports, 

food trucks and even a thong 

throwing competition. 

The concert starts at 5.00pm 

and concludes at 9.00pm with 

a spectacular fireworks display.

Ceremony, during which we 

will welcome 50 new citizens 

and also announce the 

recipients of the Ryde Citizen 

and Young Citizen of the Year

WORK began this week on the first rail tunnel under 

Sydney Harbour, which will link northern Sydney with 

the inner west. 

The work is the first 

stage of a 6.2 kilometres 

of tunnel from

edge of Sydney Harbour 

at Blues Point 

and will be linked to 

the 31km of Sydney

such a rare case. 

“Mini,” an unusual, 

albino Miniature 

Schnauzer had recently 

become unwell; she 

was rapidly gaining 

weight and was vomiting 

frequently. 

Mini’s owner was 

concerned for her 

dog’s health, however 

with five young children 

of her own, trips 

to the vet were never 

an easy task. So, rather 

than taking Mini to 

the vet, the vet came 

to Mini. 

Dr Robey promptly 

arrived at Mini’s home, 

with modern, portable 

veterinary equipment 

in tow, to conduct 

the thorough medical 

exam. 

During the exam Dr

with the delivery of her

and receive their much 

needed first meal. 

Under Mini’s watchful 

eye, they have 

continued to grow 

into strong, healthy 

puppies and will soon 

be looking for new 

families to head home

Proctection of Animals 

visited Bondi Junction 

on Saturday to host a 

pop up shop adoption 

day for rescued cats 

and kittens. 

The pop up shop was 

held at a private home 

in Brisbane Street where 

prospective adoptees selected 

the cats and kittens 

of their choice. 

World League spokesperson 

Jonine Penrose- 

Wall told The Weekly Times 

the pop up shop is part of a 

campaign of “assertive rehousing” 

being promoted 

across inner city Sydney. 

“Shelters will not go out 

and try to find homes for 

cats so these cats end up 

being destroyed,” she said. 

“We’ve had lots of people 

drop into our pop up 

shop and have their photographs 

taken with the 

kittens, so hopefully they’ll 

post the photographs on 

their facebook sites to help 

promote what we’re doing.” 

Prospective owners were 

told about the cats’ background 

and that they are 

micro-chipped and desexed. 

“We’re not a market 

and we don’t do impulse 

adoptions but once we 

have found people who 

we know will make caring 

owners, our carers deliver 

the cats to their homes and 

help them settle in to their 

new lives.” 

There were six local volunteers 

at the pop up shop 

on Saturday and an important 

part of their work was 

to give advice. 

“People will tell us about 

their problems, which can 

range from us being informed 

about homeless 

kittens living under a house 

to a cat who is being bullied 

by a dog or other 

cats,” Jonine added. 

“Our mission is the 

welfare and protection of 

animals, so we are much 

more than a cat rescue and 

adoption service.” 

The World League for 

the Protection of Animals 

is based on the corner of 

Victoria Road and Cowell 

Street in Gladesville. 

The World League’s pop 

up shops will be coming to 

the inner west in the near 

future.

Ryde RSL Cricket Club and the touring English cricket team Norton Oakes. 

The Sheffield-based 

Poms arrive in TWT 

territory later this 

week where they’ll 

line up against old rivals 

North Ryde RSL 

in a keenly-contested 

international cricket 

series. 

North Ryde are the current 

Ashes holders and 

confident of another 

strong showing against 

the wily Englishmen. 

Up for grabs is the 

George Dingwall Shield. 

The North Ryde cricketers 

reclaimed the Ashes 

on their all conquering 

tour of Sheffield in 2016 

and are in good fettle for 

the scheduled three day 

‘Test’ match at E.L.S Hall 

Oval in North Ryde from 

February 5-7 and three 

one-day internationals on 

Monday January 28; Sunday 

February 3 and Tuesday 

February 12.

rivalry between

94-99-2004-2009-11-14 

and 2016 - to lift the Laurie 

Bosward Trophy on 

ten occasions. 

They made it a clean 

sweep on the 2016 trip 

to the United Kingdom 

by retaining the Laurie 

Bosward Trophy with a 

3-0 triumph in the oneday 

series and downing 

Chatsworth House in a 

Twenty20 fixture.

talented Michael Simpson, 

who smashed a 

magnificent 237 not out 

for the Collegiate club in 

a 12 overs per side fixture

nine boundaries during 

his epic 62-ball knock.
