Apollo, looks to cArve niche in europeAn supercAr mArket
Yet another group of designers, engineers and wealthy financiers feels compelled to bring a car to market in
the financial and performance stratosphere, and based on first impressions, the automobile world is better for
it. Named for the son of Zeus in Greek mythology, the Apollo has been engineered as a racecar and street car
combined in the same package.
Of his many attributes, the
mythological god, Apollo, was also
considered “the ideal of
manly beauty”.
timing help power the Apollo to a 224 MPH top speed and 62 MPH in three
seconds flat—presumably making 0-60 in less than three seconds.
“Engineers have constantly striven to further develop technology to the
boundaries of what is technically feasible. The results are technical masterpieces
that bring mankind one step closer to the thrill of speed and the
dream of flying and driving,” according to Gumpert marketing materials.
Of course if you’re going to go that fast, you want to be able to turn and
stop. Engineers tested the Apollo across Europe on highways and racetracks,
including Hockenheim, Zolder, Imola and Nürbergring to create
the perfect balance of speed and handling. The car’s double-wishbone
pushrod configuration transfers forces to a racecar-style inboard spring
and shock package. Ride height is actually driver-selected from about
an inch and a half to four and three-fourths inches. The standard traction-control
system allows for four different settings, depending on how
aggressive the driver is feeling. A three-level anti-lock brake system powers
six-piston calipers in the front and rear that clamp massive 14.9-inch
rotors. Street tires will be the same 19-inch Pirelli P Zeros found on the
Maserati MC12.
Based on Mr. Gumpert’s all-wheel-drive experience, it’s surprising that
Gumpert opted for a rear-drive configuration, but they must have had
their reasons. Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a 6-speed
sequential-manual gearbox with a twin-clutch configuration—the same
one in the Pagani Zonda and Lamborghini Murciélago. The gearbox is
controlled through a console-mounted gearshift and clutch pedal: there
are no paddle shifters.
“The Apollo’s cockpit reflects the function-oriented atmosphere of a racing
vehicle—without neglecting a certain amount of comfort,” states the
car’s brochure.
There is a Momo racing steering wheel (no airbags), along with a simple,
clear gauge cluster, air conditioning and a DVD infotainment system. The
interior is pretty much custom-built for each individual buyer. The seats
are actually molded into the monocoque tub, using padding and adjustable
pedals to configure the car to each driver. Buyers can configure the
interior to their primary use of the vehicle—spartan for more track use,
or luxury appointments for more street use, including leather seats and
dash.

“One way that the Apollo
differs from many supercars
is that it combines a
racecar-style chrome-moly
tube frame with a carbon
fiber tub”
At first glance, the car certainly fits the part. It looks like a Mazda RX8
combined with sports racers from the Grand-Am Cup series. It has the
performance requisite front splitter, rear diffuser and even an F1-style
rooftop air intake. It’s horsepower ranges from 600-800, depending on
which twin-turbo V8 engine is selected. Plus, it’s got gull-wing doors—a
must if your car is going to make it onto sports car posters and calendars.
“It has always been a dream of mine to have a car that has so much
downforce, such aerodynamic efficiency, that you could drive on the
roof of a tunnel at high speed…and this car can,” according to Roland
Gumpert, founder and managing director of Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur
GmbH (say that three times quickly). The small German company is
determined to wedge its way into the garages of the world’s wealthy, as it
joins the growing community of small exotic car manufacturers, including
Spyker, Mosler and Saleen, to name a few.
“We strive to satisfy our customers’ dreams of a powerful, exclusive and
unique sports car—a vehicle that provides a breathtaking driving experience
and also has the potential to win on race tracks across the world,”
boasts the brochure.
American buyers won’t have to worry about buying the car named after
the sun god in Greek mythology to cruise our streets, but it’s being
engineered to simultaneously meet German safety requirements and
specifications for a couple of European racing series (FIA GT production
specs are available, but presumably not street-legal). One way that the
Apollo differs from many supercars is that it combines a racecar-style
chrome-moly tube frame with a carbon fiber tub, rather than carbon fiber
with metal subframes. It even includes a carbon fiber crush box in the
nose to protect occupants in a frontal impact, like F1 cars.
The car’s mid-engine drivetrain is derived from Audi components—not
surprising, in light of the fact that Gumpert spent 30 years with the company,
much of it overseeing its motorsports division. He supervised Audi’s
development of the Quattro’s pre-cursor, which went on to win 25 World
Rally Championships races and 4 world titles.
Mr. Gumpert and his engineers have added two KKK Turbochargers to a
beefed up version of Audi’s proven 4.2 liter, DOHC engine. In its “base”
form, it puts out 641 HP and 597 lb/ft of torque. GSG advertises optional
horsepower choices of 700 and 800, but it’s probable that these configurations
won’t be street-legal. The low-mounted, dual turbochargers
compress air that comes in through two massive intercoolers. Five valves
per cylinder, a dry-sump lubrication system and variable intake valve
“The Apollo has 27 percent more
torque than a Carrera GT.”
Based on the actual performance of the first Apollo prototype car, Europe’s
Autocar magazine it “The most exciting car to ever wear number plates,”—
quite a statement with cars such as the Enzo, Carrera GT and MC12 on the
market, and a major feather in the hat of an independent manufacturer
that plans to build and sell about 60 units per year.
Autocar’s test driver was full of praise for this newest supercar entry.
“Even with the benefit of warm, tacky slicks there’s no point in applying a
bootful in first gear – the power and torque are just too strong. Half throttle
in second and the Gumpert feels Porsche 911 Turbo fast. Make that 911
Turbo S fast.”
At 175.6 inches long and 78.6 inches wide, the Apollo is six inches shorter
and three inches wider than the Porsche Carrera GT, a vehicle it will likely
be compared to. However, at a mere 2,525 pounds, the Apollo has a weight
advantage of more than 500 pounds and boasts 36 more horsepower. In
addition, the Apollo has 27 percent more torque than a Carrera GT. Wow!
The base vehicle is priced at 198,000 Euros (not including their value added
tax), or about $234,000—about a 40-percent savings over the Carrera GT.
Of his many attributes, the mythological god, Apollo, was also considered
“the ideal of manly beauty”. Apollo the car could certainly fit this description.
Our guess is that Mr. Gumpert plans more than one vehicle in his
model line, because he has chosen the mythical “griffin” (body of a lion,
head of an eagle) to represent his brand—one that stands ready to earn
a position of prominence on a continent where builders choose prancing
horses, raging bulls and family crests to represent their vehicles.
According to Gumpert, “this mythological creature…is a symbol for
strength and velocity. Last, but not least, it is perceived as the symbol for
ruling the earth and sky. Under his sign (the griffin) Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur
starts off to compete with the established competitors [in] the
market and on the race track.”

2010 CAMARO RS b DARK KNIGHT BATMOBILE
Money makes the world spin round, and the
ultra-exclusive 678 horsepower Pagani Zonda
company’s dealers in Hong Kong—and no doubt
an extremely affluent client—Pagani will create
five (hence the clever “Cinque” title) street
legal versions of the Zonda R. It will be the first
Pagani vehicle to receive a sequential gearbox
and an entirely new skin made of carbon-titanium,
but the chances are, you’re never going to
see one. All five of the silver beasts are already
sold, each at roughly 1.6 million before taxes.
Most everyone has seen the Dark Knight, and
those of you who haven’t should. Not just
for amazing performances, a killer plot, and
sublime special effects, but to see the newest
incarnation of the Batmobile in action. It’s
part Lamborghini, part hummer and every inch
screams, “Covet me.” At nine feet wide, fifteen
feet long and roughly two and a half tons the
new Tumbler is still capable of zero to sixty
sprints in less than six seconds. Even more
amazing is the goliath’s ability to get off the
ground, as Batman isn’t the only one able to fly
anymore. The Tumbler is equipped with panels
that flare out enabling it to make unassisted
jumps of up to thirty feet. Just as Commissioner
Gordon said in 2005, “I’ve got to get me

B
VeilSide has long been renowned for their prowess
as an automotive styling salon, and now
their luxury and exotics branch, Premier 4509
has taken center stage. Most of us would never
dream of disassembling a Lamborghini Murcielago
or Bentley Continental GT, but Premier
4509 did just that—and what’s more, they improved
on perfection. Now the salon is committing
sweet blasphemy again, and this time with
the Aston Martin Vantage. From aesthetics to
performance, the Vantage received an overhaul.
The iconic marque now features a new front
and rear bumper, side skirts, and an updated
spoiler. Bond never had it so good.
