Goldfish Swim School Northbrook

Consultants assists struggling students 

The key to success for 

a child of any age, with 

a learning difference, is 

finding the correct level of 

support. This is the challenge 

faced by educational 

consultants Jill Burstein 

and her son, Jordan Burstein, 

co-owners of JJB Educational 

Consulting, Inc., 

a Northbrook-based business. 

“We want to find the best 

match for each family and 

student to provide a successful 

educational experience,” 

said Jill Burstein 

who has a Master’s Degree 

in Special Education with 

a concentration in learning 

disabilities, behavior 

disorders, and Attention 

Deficit Disorder (ADHD). 

While working at the 

university level, Jill discovered 

many colleges 

didn’t offer students the 

level of support necessary 

for academic success. 

“The challenge is to find 

the institution that best 

serves the needs of my students, 

and assist families 

in finding the school that 

best matches their child’s 

needs,” said Burstein, 

who is a member of the 

Independent Educational 

Consultants Association, a 

Certified Education Planner 

and a member of the 

Learning Disability Association 

of America. 

Jordan Burstein also 

works with students with 

learning differences. Jordan 

had a bumpy start as a 

college student because he 

had undiagnosed ADHD. 

“This has led me to a career 

helping students just 

like me,” he said. “My experience 

and insight into 

the students with whom 

we work to allow me not 

only to help students find 

good matches, but to help 

them understand how 

much college differs from 

high school,” adds Jordan, 

who has a B.A. in psychology, 

and is a member of the 

Independent Educational 

Consultants Association, 

CHADD and the Learning 

Disability Association of 

America. 

Besides working with 

students applying for college, 

Jordan provides organizational 

coaching for 

students with ADHD and 

on the autism spectrum. 

To start the process of 

finding the right match, Jill 

or Jordan Burstein conduct 

an initial interview 

with each student and their 

parents to start identifying 

appropriate matches. They 

read all the data and testing 

pertinent to the student’s 

disability. Once the right 

programs, schools or colleges 

are found that match 

the student’s needs, there 

are meetings to review and 

narrow the list. They work 

with the student to assist 

them in filling out applications 

and writing and 

editing essays for college 

submissions, post-secondary 

programs, and schools. 

Plans are finalized and 

transition planning is reviewed.

Avoca Community Preschool 

is pleased to offer Developmental 

Screenings to children 

between the ages of 2 1⁄2 and 5 

living within the Avoca School 

District 37 boundaries. Screenings 

are offered to children who 

are suspected of having developmental 

issues in the areas of 

language development, fine and 

gross motor development, social 

skills and/or early learning. 

A team of educators, including 

an Early Childhood Teacher, 

Speech/Language Pathologist, 

School Psychologist and an Occupational 

Therapist will use the 

DIAL-R screening tool along 

with a parent interview to complete 

the screening. The screening 

takes approximately 45 - 60 

minutes. Parents are required 

to attend the screenings and are 

given the opportunity to ask 

questions and express any concerns 

they may have regarding 

their child. 

Results of the screening will 

be discussed with parents and, if 

the results of the screening indicate 

delays in one or more areas, 

the assessment team will refer 

the child for a more in-depth assessment. 

If potential problems 

are detected in any of the screening 

areas, the child may qualify 

to receive specialized services 

through the Avoca Community

High school French success starts in preschool 

Former French School 

students deliver exceptional 

national test results 

Fifteen years ago, the 

French School in Winnetka 

opened its doors to 

preschoolers. Recently, 

families of previous students 

(now in high school), 

reached out to the French 

School to express gratitude 

for their children’s 

solid foundation in French. 

Former French School 

students have placed into 

high-level French courses 

in high school, placed in 

the top 1 percent on the 

National French Exam (Le 

Grand Concours), scored 

5’s on the Advanced Placement 

French test, and even 

obtained a perfect 800 on 

the SAT Single Subject 

French test. 

The long-term benefits 

of acquiring a foreign language 

at an early age are 

numerous, and when students 

get a head start and 

view foreign language 

learning as a joy rather than 

a burden, it is clear why 

families choose French immersion

Toddlers and preschoolers
