CLASSIC TIMES
From our Director…..
Lynda Chrisson
Happy 2019!!
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season.
For everyone who helped make the holidays special for others –
thank you so very much! Goody bags, Project Warmth Blankets,
Families Helping Families, food baskets, and every Center’s holiday
activities could not have happened without so many generous
people helping make each activity and event special. Every
gift or card you sent, every hug, every smile, every special treat,
every meal you packed and delivered, every craft you made, and
song you sang made a difference in someone’s life. Thank you
all!!!
I often use this issue to share tips to help all of us stay safe during
the cold weather and flu season. This year is different. The
FTC is requesting that information about a very nasty scam regarding
Social Security accounts be shared and we feel it is important
for you to know what’s happening. So, stay safe and
warm, keep your pets warm, drink lots of water, watch out for
slippery decks and steps, wash your hands frequently, and please,
spread the news about the information below from the FTC and
my personal experience.
Have you received a recorded phone call from someone claiming
to be from the Social Security Administration? I received calls
twice in one week. The recording is convincing and creates a
very real feeling of panic and fear about losing your monthly
check. Before I recognized the first call as a scam, what went
through my head was: 1) I’ve been a victim of identity theft; 2)
my identity has been used to commit a crime; 3) the crime has
been discovered and law enforcement is taking action against my
account; and 4) the SSA is calling to help me regain my identity,
get out of this mess, and keep my benefits – wow aren’t they
nice! The scammer is counting on you or me being so upset that
we automatically follow their instructions to start resolving whatever
the problem is so that our next check arrives on time.
DON’T DO IT - HANG UP THE PHONE!!!
There are several call variations. The calls I received said that
my Social Security account had been linked to a crime involving
drugs or sending money out of the country illegally and my account
was blocked. Or the caller may say that somebody used
your SS number to apply for credit cards and you could lose your
benefits. Another variation is that your bank account is about to
be seized and that you need to withdraw all your money. For
each version, the caller has a way to help you resolve the problem.
They ask you to respond in a specific way to be connected
to a staff person. DON’T DO IT - HANG UP THE PHONE!!!
The FTC wants everyone to know:
• The SSA will never-ever call and ask for your SS number,
ask you to send them money, and won’t call to
threaten your benefits.
• Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number
(1-800-772-1213), but that’s NOT the real SSA calling.
The SSA does not make calls from this number.
This number is only for the public to call SSA. Computers
make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You
can’t trust Caller ID anymore.
• Never give out your SS number. Don’t confirm the last
4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card
number to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
• Remember, anyone who tells you to wire money, pay
with a gift card, or send cash is A SCAMMER – AL-
WAYS, NO MATTER WHO THEY SAY THEY ARE.
If you get a call from someone who says they are from the SSA,
GET OFF THE PHONE! Please call 803-356-5111 and let our
Later Life Ad-
vocate, Karen know
about this or
any other scams you
discover. You
can also call the real
SSA at their call-in only number, 1-
800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).
If you have
spotted a scam, tell the
FTC at ftc.gov/
complaint.
