ISSUE I | A PART OF SEWA PROJECT ‘BEING LOGICAL CITIZENS’ IX D

WHY CYBERBUZZ?
Computers have revolutionized our lives either directly or indirectly. It is not enough to have
isolated computers systems; they need to be networked to facilitate communication with
external businesses. This exposes them to the outside world – hacking, cyber crimes and
promoting false news through messaging apps. A single upload and A share button can
actually change someone’s life.
Keeping this in mind, the students of class IX D have taken up their SEWA (Social Empowerment
through Work Education and Action) project “Being Logical Citizens’ which aims at educating
the students and parents about the threats associated with social media and its
countermeasures. This project will also spread awareness about fake messages on Whatsapp
and the menace it can cause.
This issue named ‘CYBERBUZZ’ is a small step towards spreading awareness about the different
cyber crimes and the ways to tackle them and stay safe online.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
“In the light of growing importance of information security in all walks of life
and critically viewing the emerging cases of cyber crimes in Indian society and
all over the world, there is a need to sensitize netizens most importantly
teenagers who are online most of the time. Internet has become the integral
part of today’s generation from communication through instant messages, emails,
shopping , banking, travelling and studying and has touched every aspect of life. As computer
has security controls that can be infected with different and dangerous malicious software that
can steal information and make our life worse, the need of the hour is to educate and make the
internet users aware of the dark side of the web.
I am glad that my students have taken this initiative religiously and have put in relentless
efforts to make this newsletter worth reading.
Enjoy reading and stay safe in this humungous and ever growing cyber world!”
- Ms Asha Prabhakar
HEADMISTRESS SPEAKS…
“There is a lot of buzz about the importance of teaching computer skills to the
students but what we forget is the importance of teaching cyber security skills to
them. Today's generation has grown up online so sensitizing them about cyber
THE WORKSHOP
security becomes all the more necessary. I congratulate Class IX D and their
mentor for taking up such a relevant topic for their SEWA project. I am sure this initiative will
not only transform tech savvy generation into digital leaders but will also help in developing a
more digitally secure future.” - Ms Amita Ganjoo
Ms. Neha Bajpai is working as the senior technical officer and program
coordinator of Information Security Education and Awarenesss (ISEA) Project
Phase 2 under the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology
(MEITY) at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) Noida.
WORKSHOP
RESOURCE PERSON
MS. NEHA BAJPAI
Treat your Password like a toothbrush… Don’t let anyone use it and get a new one every six months…

Under the SEWA Project ‘Being Logical Citizens’ of class IX D, a workshop comprising
Cyber Risks and Threats, Social Engineering methods, Tabnabbing Security, Whatsapp
Security, Facebook Security and Password Security was organized in collaboration with
CDAC (The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing),Noida. The students of Class
IX attended the informative session and valuable insights on Cyber Security was provided
by the resource person.
The workshop session was interesting and all the students were curious and enthusiastic to
learn more about the safety precautions one can take while online. The interaction
between the students and resource person was informative. Students found solutions to
their queries. All were given Social Security Awareness Handouts for elaborate
understanding of the different security aspects.
The topics covered in the workshop:
‣ Attacks
‣ Threats in social media
‣ Cyber Crimes
‣ Cyber Security
‣ Cyber Bullying
‣ Tabnabbing
Cyber Crime
‣ Key Loggers
‣ Phishing
‣ Real and Fake news
and emails
‣ Tips to be safe
‣ Do’s & Don’ts Online
Fact Watch
In a computing context, security
comprises cybersecurity and
physical security -- both are
used by enterprises to protect
against unauthorized access to
data centers and other
computerized systems
Cyber crime encompasses any criminal act dealing with computers and networks (called
hacking).A major attack vector of Cyber Crime is to exploit broken/weak software.
There can be different types of attacks like
passive, active, backdoor, close-in ,insider,
interception, targeted, etc. that can be made by
using virus ,worm ,ransomware Trojan ,etc..
Hackers exploit the weak software by attacking
them. These types of weak software should be
fixed up using Cyber Security (A body of
technologies which deals with protection of
computers and data or protect the privacy) .
Heard of Tabnabbing?
Tab nabbing is a new online phishing scam
to attack your computer and your finances. It
targets internet users who open lots of tabs
on their browser at the same time.
Prevent Tabnabbing in
steps:
• Refresh the browser after returning back
from other tabs
• Check the URL correctness before key-in or
mouse clicks.
• Avoid Financial Transactions on tabbed
browsing
Beware of Keyloggers !
A Keylogger is a hardware device or small
program that monitors each keystroke a user
types on a specific computer's keyboard.
0 Software
0 Hardware
Actual Spy Keylogger
Keylogger
This is a software keylogger which records the keystrokes. Disadvantage is that
it monitors all the PC activity and as keystrokes are recorded they can record the
usernames and passwords.
Phishing
Phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of
attempting to acquire sensitive information such as
usernames, passwords and credit card details by
masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an
electronic communication.
A Phishing E-mail is sent by online criminals to trick
you into going to fake Web sites and revealing
personal information.
Fact Watch
The latest figures that Facebook
is reporting to advertisers
indicate that India has overtaken
the United States to become the
platform's largest country
audience.
Common Features of Phishing Emails
Lucrative offers and eye-catching or attentiongrabbing
statements are designed to attract
people’s attention immediately.
A favourite tactic amongst cybercriminals is to ask
you to act fast because the super deals are only for
a limited time.
Whether it looks like it's from someone you don't
know or someone you do know, if anything seems
out of the ordinary or just suspicious in general
don't click on it!
Email Tracer by CDAC
EmailTracer is a tool to track
email sender’s identity. It
analyzes the email header and
gives the complete details of the
sender like IP address, which is
key point to find the culprit and
the route followed by the mail,
the Mail Server, details of
Service Provider etc. EmailTracer
traces up to Internet Service
Provider level only.

WhatsApp Security
WhatsApp is the favorite medium for hackers. Malware scripts embedded in photos
& videos received on WhatsApp can access your media gallery, contacts, etc. and
transmit them to remote servers. There is a simple way to protect oneself from such an
attack.
Point to be noted
By making these minor changes your phone will become ‘WhatsApp safe’
Smart Tips for your Cyber Journey
• Limit the posting of images.
• Avoid escalating the situation.
• Keep the record of all the online
activities that is carried out.
The wildfire of fake news , spreading through social media giants, is hurting the society’s fabric,
both online and offline . The government has asked WhatsApp and other social media
platforms to take onus and help curb fake news circulation, which had been causing violence –
even lynching in some recent cases . “BEING LOGICAL CITIZEN” Project will make the students
aware about the menace of fake news and its circulation on social media platforms.
Also, through this project, students and parents will be sensitized about the ways and
means of understanding whether a news or message received by them is FAKE or not
and sensitize them not to forward unwanted messages to others on SOCIAL MEDIA
platforms without checking its credibility.
REFLECTION !
BE LOGICAL CITIZENS
AND ADOPT SAFE WEB PRACTICES
“I was not too interested in the workshop in beginning, but when it
started I got useful and important tips and information about the
safety on social media. When Ms Neha asked what is safest and
easiest way to remember and code a password ,I answered it
correctly and I was surprised ,that I was the only student in
workshop who knew the answer and was awarded a cap too. ARNAV GUPTA
I confidently answered that a passphrase is a password made by a phrase and we take first or last
letters from all the words in phrase like “An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away” we can phrase
password like “@A@dK!)A”. It was a very amazing experience for me . Now I want to take part in
every workshop.” Arnav Gupta, IX D
