The Porters, who made 12-of-14 free throws in the fourth quarter, closed it out. Lockport started the game strong, jumping out to leads of 6-0, 8-2 and 14-4 on a rebound bucket by sophomore center Sydney Furr (6 points) with 2:49 left in the first quarter. The Porters led 16-12 after one quarter and maintained that lead through the second quarter, going ahead 28-22 at halftime. The Griffins looked like they might take control in the third quarter, going on a 12-3 burst to open the period. Molnar hit a 3-pointer to give them their only lead of the game at 34-31 with 2:36 to play. Lockport came back with five straight points to retake the lead before Molnar had a steal and layup with 39 seconds to play to tie the game for the third and final time at 36-36. Junior post player Jenna Cotter (6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocked shots) also came up big for the Porters before picking up her fourth foul in the third quarter. Senior guard Payton Grcevic (6 points) and junior guard Abby Pappagoerge (5 points) also joined in the balanced Porter scoring. East won the first meeting of the teams this season by a score of 61-43 on Jan. 4 in Frankfort. But Lockport led that game 25-24 at halftime. Earlier in the week, on Jan. 21, East split a pair of games at the DeKalb Martin Luther King Tournament. First was a 45-44 victory over Burlington Central. But Savic and Perch went down with injuries in the game. Later that day the Griffins lost to Rockford Boylan 64-37. Sheehan led the Griffins with 16 points against Burlington and 11 points against Boylan. She was named to the All-Tournament team. Then on Jan. 23 East hosted Homewood-Flossmoor in another SWSC Blue showdown and lost a close one by the score of 44-40. Molnar led the Griffins with 12 points while Sheehan added 10 points. Flaherty said last year they knew what they were up against every game and were getting “drilled by a wide margin.” So that is why this year has been all the more frustrating because they are so close to getting over the hump. “We look like we were turning a corner winning some close games and now it looks like we coughed this one up the same way we would have earlier in the year,” Flaherty said.
