2019 is officially here.
That means .. back to school. It also means that we welcome
grade 10s. but also wave goodbye to our grade 12s,
having left us last year.
The need not despair though as
we have launched ‘Hola MaCollege’
and that is dedicated to all
who have now gone on to another
journey in life.
We have looked at our design. I
think it had gone a bit stale, so we
try something new this year: shorter
articles, more ‘snippets’ and somehow
colour. Let us see if it is working.
TVETs: a lot more!
TVETs: a lot more!
a bit more
The problem is of course – as always – to balance ‘serious’
articles with ‘readability’.
This issue will look at the transitions – from everything
to everything really.
But we have also looked at other things. In essence:
start paging and have a good read!
We need writers!
Hola MaHigh-School is YOUR magazine. That is why we
would love to see students writing for students about student
life and everything of importance to a student in any
grade10-12 across the country.
What is required? That is easy:
You have to be in grade 10-12 -
somewhere
Impeccable in your preferred language-and
that might not be English.
We try to be more than just
English.
Passionate about your topic of
choice - no dull articles here.
Do you get anything out of it?
Well, not money, sorrry. BUT
if we publish your articles you will
have:
What to do?
It has paid off, not only is my
For many students, arriving at school is the first time that they are truly
They are expected to take care of themselves as best they can, figuring
What does it do to you?
You might already know that energy drinks can screw with your
sleep, make you gain weight or even spike your blood pressure. But
overarching evidence suggests they may lead to substance abuse,
mental health problems, a higher diabetes risk, tooth decay and
kidney damage, too
The sweet stuff may be to blame, she says. Energy drinks typically
contain high amounts of added sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and
artificial sweeteners.
When you down too much sugar, your body will eventually have a
hard time responding to it, requiring more and more insulin to help
glucose enter your cells. This insulin resistance can eventually lead
to type 2 diabetes, according to the National Institute of Diabetes
and Digestive Kidney Diseases.
Plus, consistently high blood sugar levels can damage your nerves
and blood vessels over time, which can set the stage for heart disease
and kidney problems
Anything good at all?
Not really: Energy drinks can give you a boost when Monday morning
hits you hard. But that fizzy beverage isn’t doing much for your
body beyond your temporary pep.
Actually, your body does not need it.
Mattei emphasises that the current evidence
does support that the health risks outweigh any
short-term perks you might experience from
your energy drink.
Believe it ornot, there is something simple to
drink:
WATER
Your move, then, is to nix them from your diet
altogether. As obvious as it sounds, reaching
for water can help, she says. Staying hydrated
naturally keeps your body running no funky
ingredients or added sugar necessary.
There is no simple cure for ‘abusing’ your body.
‘un-abuse’ your body is better than drinking
sugar.
PS: there is a reason why we now have a sugar-tax.

Your health
‘I need to eat healthy’ is a popular expression that falls into most
people’s New Year’s resolutions and long term goals. But how do we
eat healthy?
E
B
It is commonly known that vegetables and fruits are essential. Fruits
such as oranges and lemon (citrus fruits) are good sources of vitamin
C. However, since they are water soluble vitamins, they are not
stored in the body and need to be replaced every day. Conversely,
vitamin C can cause diarrhoea if taken in excess.
Vegetables, on the other hand, need to be prepared well to maximize
their benefits. As a general rule, it is best to keep cooking time,
temperature and the amount of liquid to a minimum. That is why
steaming is one of the best ways to cook most vegetables. Studies
show that during deep-fat frying, fat penetrates the food and vegetables
dehydrate.
Fibre is also important in a healthy diet as it can help with digestion,
glucose levels, and healthy cholesterol levels. Fibre can be found in
fruits and vegetables as well as in nuts, beans, and whole grains. To
increase intake of whole grains, look for breads that have “whole
wheat” as their top ingredient. It is also important to avoid processed
snacks and baked goods that contain mainly white flours and sugars.
Lastly, it is important to control your portion sizes to avoid over-eating.
Because even if you eat healthy, you can still overeat. Avoid
going back for seconds!
More fish
no to over-eat
Smaller portions
No seconds

at Healthy
ut what to eat?
Meat consumption is a great way to
acquire the protein needed in your diet.
HOWEVER, not all types of meat offer
the same health benefits.
Red meat and pork should only be eaten
in limited amounts because they are
high in saturated fats. Instead, one can
eat white meat, like chicken or turkey.
The best alternative to meat is fish. Fish
contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are
considered to be good for heart health
and good for the brain too!
Did you know?
Omega-3s Can Fight Depression and Anxiety
Omega-3s Can Improve Eye Health
Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Improve Sleep
Omega-3 Fats Are Good For Your Skin
Salt is also an important factor to consider when attempting a
healthy diet. Processed foods, boxed foods, and baked goods are
typically very high in sodium.
Too much sodium in your diet could lead to high blood pressure. It is
therefore important to limit your sodium intake by eating more fresh
foods. When eating processed foods; read the labels, and choose
lower sodium alternatives.
Work, study and what
I made it into university now I need to make it
out of university; but in the process, I might be in
the wait due to one simple question: Now I got
my degree, what is next?
There are numerous things I could do after university.
It all depends really on the process and
the person behind the process. Typically, it could
be work or an internship or studying further or
even
starting
In terms of the skill set and experience? And how
can I test myself that I am indeed ready for the
world of work.
According to reports, a good employee has
strong work ethic: Setting and achieving goals.
In fact, according to CareerBuilder, 73% of employers
want to see applicants demonstrate their
ability to work hard. Candidates who set high
goals for themselves, or respond well to goals set
by supervisors, indicate a willingness to do more
than clock in and clock out every day.
Worth know
Reference letters give fu
Secondly, a good employee is considered dependable:
Consistently following through. Also chosen by 73% of
employers, dependability can make all the difference between
a candidate who usually follows through, and one
who always does. Candidates who show a commitment
to completing tasks on time are assets.
Thirdly, a good employee is also considered to resemble
a positive attitude: Creating a good environment. Great
employees consistently stand out for their upbeat attitudes
and earn positive reputations for themselves. One
trait is a candidate’s ability to acknowledge mistakes and
still move forward in a positive way. It suggests they will
be equally resilient in the workplace.
Other characteristics include the ability to be self-motivated
(working effectively with little direction: Sheer
enthusiasm and interest in the work is often enough to
drive these employees), Team-oriented (making the most
out of collaboration), Effective communicator (understanding
the benefits of clarity) and flexible (adapting in
a meaningful way)
Reference letters from people who have worked with you
before is a great way to show that you possess the skills
stated above. That is why it is important to volunteer and
to do meaningful extra-curricular activities during university.

Graphic Design from a 2nd
Year’s Perspective
Okay I have one word to describe this course – challenging.
Yes emotionally, physically, intellectually and financially challenging. I
am where I am supposed to be because I am passionate about graphic
design. However, for someone who hates it, it is a nightmare and a half.
I remember the first 6 months of my first year were confusing and exciting
at the same time. The deadlines and load of work was enough to
drive anyone insane, and it did at one point and that was all good since I
figured it was part of the journey.
This is my inside story as a graphic design student.
When I first saw my timetable I thought they made a mistake: 12 modules
for the whole year from 8:00 am to 17:00 every Monday to Thursday
and 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on a Friday and that was besides the deadlines
and lots of school work which spans theory and practicals.
This course has taught a few life lessons I would like to tell anyone who
wouldd want to study this course or any course in general and they are:
• Surround yourself with great friends, you will need them.

• Don’t procrastinate (do it right away no matter how small the task
it).
• Always listen to advice but learn to trust your own judgement (I
had some serious confidence issues when it came to my work and
my lecturers picked that up).
• It is okay to make mistakes and learn from them.
• Don’t take criticism to heart. It hurts but use it to do better next
time.
• Be kind and generous (you never know, really know, who will help
you with a certain project).
• Read books outside your academics (It keeps me sane).
• And lastly: make the library your best friend.
Graphic design is a fun course that has made me view the world from
a different perspective. Now I see beauty in everything and everwhere.
At first I had no idea why we had drawing as a subject but the more I
learn, the more I get to understand its relevance as a visual communicator.
Graphic design has a lot of opportunities as well, as the course has
photography in it. It spans it all and one can work as a graphic designer,
advertising and branding, illustrator, web designer, photographer
and animator.

Graphic desing: My
Graphic Design: My
Like any other course it has its downside like when you can’t get one
creative idea and you have consultations with the lecturer and they
want scamps (rough sketches of your idea) and you are the only one
left behind and you can feel the roar of the deadline in your ears.
I too have had pretty bad days, of course. I remember one time last
year during drawing class I couldn’t get my shading right. I just sat
there staring at my drawing and the next thing I knew I had tears in
my eyes. Now I laugh about it and how stupid I must have looked to
my classmates and friends.
I am not going to lie and say this is easy. It is not! I learned to let myself
be teachable and to always practice. I know there is one person
who wants to know how this course is and all I can say is unless if you
are passionate about it, can withstand the crazy deadlines, sleepless
nights and loads of work then don’t do it. It takes a lot of discipline to
manage your time and also not forget about your social life.
There are a number of institutions that offer this course and they are
Showtime!
It is mov
I picked some info at MSN on the films we are about
to encounter in 2019.
This is a direct quote from MSN on the stuff I like:
Music!
“The current trend for popular musical extravaganzas
on the big screen shows no sign of abating just
yet. Last year, toe-tappers The Greatest Showman
and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again proved to be
box-office gold, while Bohemian Rhapsody became
the highest-grossing music biopic of all time.
Unsurprisingly, there are a trio of films hoping to
repeat their success in 2019: Elton John biopic (or
“fantasy musical”, as star Taron Egerton prefers to
call it) and a big-budget adaptation of Andrew Lloyd
Webber’s Cats, featuring an A-list line-up of singing
and acting talent (Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift,
Ian McKellen, Idris Elba and Judi Dench, to name a
few)”
Cats is a winner. It had premiere in London in 1981
and ran for 21 years. The US version – Broadway –
ran for 18 years. It is nearly where a full generation
has grown up with Cats.
According to Wikipedia, it is getting a new lease on
life and being staged in London again.
That is an amazing career.

ie time in SA
It gotta’ be the film. The topic is made for film. The
plot is great and the characters are head-strong and
used to betrayal, murder, conspiracy and feminine
rivalry (as the myths will have it).
The background is of course the real-life drama of
the two queens in Britain. Elizabeth I did not have
a good start in life after all. Her father married her
mother (Anne Boleyn) and had her beheaded when
Elizabeth was 2 years old.
Mary was 6 days old when her father (King James
V of Scotland) died. She was brought up in France
and duly married the heir to the French throne. Less
than a year later, he died.
So, back to Scotland where she married again. This
time to Lord Darnley. But he died after a huge explosion
destroyed his palace and he was found killed
in the garden.
James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell was a suspect,
but nothing could be proved. So Mary got married
to him.
These two characters are battling it out for the combined
crown of England and Scotland.
The real-life ending is rather gruesome – let us see if
the movie dares to depict that!
Tell me if this is going to be boring!

It is showtime!
Why Do We Li
It is pshycology
There are plenty of horror movies out there, but why do we
want to watch it? Isn’t is a bit too gory and incredible and
‘scary’?
There is some psychology behind it of course!
It IS pshycology - really
Dr. Jeffrey Goldstein, a professor of social and organizational
psychology at the University of Utrecht says:
“People go to horror films because they want to be frightened
or they wouldn’t do it twice. You choose your entertainment
because you want it to affect you. [..] They want those effects…
[Horror films must] provide a just resolution in the end. The
bad guy gets it. Even though they choose to watch these things,
the images are still disturbing for many people. But people have
the ability to pay attention as much or as little as they care to
in order to control what effect it has on them, emotionally and
otherwise.”
OK, so even though it is scary I can still control the effects.

ke Watching Scary Films?
It is complicated
According to a 2004 paper in the Journal of Media Psychology
by Dr. Glenn Walters, the three primary factors that make
horror films alluring are tension (generated by suspense,
mystery, terror, shock, and gore), relevance (that may relate to
personal relevance, cultural meaningfulness, the fear of death,
etc.), and (somewhat paradoxically given the second factor)
unrealism.
Gore and things I get. Relevance like chain saws I get, but also
that it must be unrealistic – probably to not frighten me too
much though. There are no monsters under my bed!
But why? still
Many theories and none are convincing. It goes from
identify with the bad guy, or with the hero – who
defeats the bad guy in the end. Gore because we have
a primordial instinct for gore. Scary, because it breaks
any norm we might have.
Basically, none of these theories fully explain why we
love watching scary films. Different people like watching
for different reasons and no theory has been put
forward that explains everyone’s motives and reasoning.
I will continue to enjoy watching even though I
don’t fully understand my own motives.
US is shutting down!
This is of course a bit simplistic
Let us unpack it a bit. It is very much a matter of
how the US is working. So, into basics.
This is agai
from the US
is closing d
Trump promised a w
paid by Mexico, to sh
US is a federal government.
US is not a country, really. It is 50
states (countries, yes!) who have elected to be
in a federal government. In essence, forming a
super-national body to take care of common
duties. These can be foreign policy, taxation,
law, and other good things. However, the 50
states are still very much in control of their own
budgets and so on.
The budget needs to be agreed
upon. Typically it is not a big deal.
After all, department of defence, department
of home affairs, department of … and so on are
rather straightforward. These things are done at
a non-partisan level.
There is a dead-line
for having the budgets signed off. If the deadline
cannot be met, the federal government
cannot do expenses. Bills and salaries cannot
be paid. It sounds harsh and it is intended to
ensure that the deadline is met. Who would like
to face the wrath of public servants who have
not received salaries?
But then we have Mr. Trump as president.
And the wall with Mexico.
First of all, Mexico is
however, does not re
are there.
Back to the wall!
n a most wonderful story
. US federal government
own, because of Trump
all on the border with Mexico, to be
ield USA from illegal immigrants.
not going to pay for any wall. That,
move the fact that illegal immigrants
a budget also encompassing
ut Trump put in some $5 billion for
ack. Then it died as Democrats now
e House. They said no thanks to the
sn’t a budget in time.
Did you know?
According to Pew Research
Center, there were some
10 million in 2016. That
is some 3% of the total
US population. However,
it might not all be people
crossing the border without
papers, but actually
people arriving in the US
on legally obtained visas
--- and then just overstaying
their time in the US.
It is claimed those are the
majority of the 10million.
er 2018!
ome 800,000 public servants have either not been paid or have been
arry on?
mp delivered a speech. All had hoped that it would be a softening up
arry on - LOL - or it might?

... and still it carrie
A partial shutdown is not just that government
can’t pay a bill here and there. People
are not getting paid their salaries. They default
on cars and bonds and the pressure is
mounting to get back to normal.
The trade unions are starting to tell the politicians
that it cannot go on for much longer.
Insofar as the wall was a key election item for
Trump it is difficult to see how he can back
down now. If he capitulates to congress and
peels the wall-funding out of the budget, it is
seen as a defeat for him. Can he afford that?
Democrats in congress will have to show that
they are actually the majority so they can
hardly accept the wall now. They campaigned
against the wall.
Trump is declaring that he intends to carry
on without a budget for months and years if
need be, because he wants the wall.
Trump is also claiming that he can get the
funding for the wall by declaring a national
emergency. That will then leave it to the President
(Trump) to act without the congress.
Meaning: build the wall!
Latest is that the dem
budgets so at least pe
agencies can be re-op
That, however, seems
It must involve comp
so good with any com
If the re-opening of a
If banks do extend cr
Predictions: I haven’t
wall funding will go o
to be a victory for him
… but maybe not!
Is this legal? Maybe. It will surely be challenged
in court very fast and if declared illegal?
Back to the very beginning again.

s on!
US is shutting down!
ocrats have suggested partial
ople can get paid and some
romises and Mr. Trump is not
Does it even matter?
800,000 people who cannot
pay the bonds and the cars?
YES: it does matter. And it is
only the beginning
gencies cannot be achieved, the US economy (people!) will get
y not extend credits to government employees. Then there is a crisis
edit, for how long can they do that? 1 month? 2 months? Then we
like 1930’s.
got a clue! I think the partial opening will take place and the border
ut of the budget with some very nice words that Trump can claim
Your health
Prepare for the real world:
Start now
... and never let go
Time M
Or you have problems
Education is the key to success but this
goes hand in hand with what we do with
our time in life after matric. Prepare: life
after matric is where a challenging begin
ning starts – and that is across all educations
and occupations.
I worked
hard, and
got used to
the money...
and I never
finished my
MBA.
One day I
will
Thousands of children complete matric every
year, some follow their passion, work, take a gap
year or even multitask and work while studying.
Working and studying seem to be a huge challenge
to most of us because of time management.
In our early twenties we still need to socialize
but should one be in a situation with both
study and work, it can become a problem.
At the end of the day we might have to choose
between social life and academic or even the job
that generates an income.
Most of the jobs students take can be to improve the CVs, have pocket
money or a job that will help financially in their studies. There is always
a pressure to dress well especially for first years being in a new environment
but sometimes one has to determine what is important and prioritise.
Avoid procrastination because it is an issue that affects most academics
and at the end we may fail to do things on time. Rather have a time table,
make notes, prepare on time, look after your health and avoid studying
a day before exams.

anagement
-
If you
don’t
write it
down, it
doesn’t
exist.
Successful
people
do
that.
... and never
be late
Flying by to-do lists or the time table
is what successful people do.
Drawing up a time table could also
help balancing between school and
work because we can see where the
‘impossibilities’ or gaps are. That
will also help planning time with
friends and social life.
Do not compare your life with
others since that can be a strain on
you. Your priorities may be different
to the next person.
What you do for a living some do
not and any comparison will just
put a lot of pressure on yourself.
You are YOU!
Learn to listen to people around
you, never mind where you are or
who they are, be it in lecture halls,
parents, brothers, and aunts because
they may add value to your
life.
Seeking advice is not defeat. It is
what clever people do, always.
For 2019 and beyond: Be wise and
live a life based on time management
and never be late.
Australia Myth:
The Hanging Rock
The Hanging Rock Mystery
The theories on this one range from an UFO abduction to an accidental
time travel incident.
A group of schoolgirls
visited Hanging Rock
one Valentine’s Day in
1900, disappeared and
were never heard from
again. But as it turns out
the story was fabricated
by an author, Joan Lindsay
in 1967, in a book called ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’.
The story even tells of a professor who went missing along with the
girls, and the eventual finding of one of the girls. As people read
the book, the urban myth developed and other stories were created
around the girls’ disappearance.
The author never confirmed whether the story actually happened
or not, and deliberately left the book ending open-ended. In fact
the final twelve pages of the book, which constitute the last and
twelfth chapter, were published after the author’s death.
The story places a great deal of emphasis on clocks and time, and
this maybe the reason time travel was linked to the mystery.
