This is it for 2019. I hope you have enjoyed
the magazine this year.
This last issue has got a few things on
what to do during school holidays.
Of course we can go to the game reserve
and see a lion, but we can do so much
more. That is what we have tried to describe.
Climate change is reality and Greta is
not the only one. That is where we have
a few inspirational articles. Youth can
do it!
Only thing left: Have a blessed festive
season, look after yourself and see you
all back here in January!
Good read!

holidays
Summer holidays! Recharging and lazing
around, doing nothing. Or it could be
different?
We have tried to find a few destinations
and activities that could be fun. Some of
it – well, those are real ‘tourist things’ but
maybe worth it. Beware: there are costs
to those, but hey – sky diving? Adrenaline-junkies:
are you there?
On the other hand, there are also things
like unique horse-riding holidays. This is
where one will get close to nature and to
the horses and having a unique experience.
There are many things to do, besides just
go and see something new. A holiday that
is also meaningful could be the experience
for life. Time is now for such things.
Of course we also look at wildlife and conservation
programmes. We might have a
chance to experience something else ‘out
there’, while there still is an ‘out there’.
Remember: nature is fragile and we have
to do something before it is all gone.
SanParks offers something completely different.

is life-long commitment, like what Greta

Junior Honorary Rangers National Project
The SANParks Junior Honorary Rangers National Project coordinates
and manages the standard of Junior Honorary Ranger activities
and training courses offered by the regions.
Junior Honorary Rangers are typically high
school children who have an interest in conservation.
The activities and courses, which
are interactive, are generally held outside of
the national parks, although the Junior Honorary
Rangers may visit the national parks as
part of their annual curriculum. The curriculum
is offered in five-phases over five years.
The aims of the Junior Honorary Rangers National Project are to:
• Instill a love for and knowledge of nature and conservation
• Support SANParks
• Have a succession plan for the SANParks Honorary Rangers
• Encourage Junior Honorary Rangers to remain involved in conservation
and support SANParks after they have left school
In order for a Junior Honorary Ranger to become an Honorary
Ranger, he/she must have attended Junior Honorary Rangers not
less than an average of 80% over three years and must pass the
compulsory SANParks Honorary Ranger course.

“H20 Today” Exhibition at Sci-Bono
H2O Today explores the beauty and essential nature of water, the planet’s
lifeblood. The exhibit is on display at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre until
April 2020.
The exhibition, organised by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition
Service (SITES), examines the diversity and challenges of water
sources worldwide and promotes conversation, creativity and innovation
through art, science and technology.
H2O Today is part of the Smithsonian’s
#ThinkWater Initiative
to raise awareness of water as a
critical resource for life. Using
immersive content, interactive
activities, and digital media, this
international exhibition – supplemented
with Iziko curated African content and collections objects – brings
a global conversation at a critical time within the Southern African regional
context.
H2O Today dives into what it means to live on a planet where 71 percent
of the surface is covered in
water, of which less than
3 percent is drinkable. The
exhibition highlights water’s
criticality in daily life worldwide
through waterpower,
industry, agriculture and
home use.
It explores the science of water from the
hydrological cycle, weather and climate
to its physical power as an architect and
sculptor of landscape. The exhibition
showcases global examples and striking
imagery augmented with audiovisual material
that tells the story of Earth as the
water planet, water as our home, ways
that water shapes culture, rising tides and
sea level rise, and innovative solutions
to some of the planet’s greatest water
challenges.
The exhibition also features several firsts
for the Smithsonian initiatives with an
art jamming section entitled h2Art and a
troupe of Actors, from the Market Theatre
Laboratory.
With the growing concern about the
water crisis and droughts experienced
in parts of South Africa, the H2O exhibition
couldn’t have arrived at Sci-Bono
at a better time. As a benefit of this
precise timing, this exhibition will teach
learners and the public about strategies
of preserving water in new and exciting
ways. Sci-Bono invites everyone to visit
the centre and take full advantage of this
wonderful opportunity to engage with
and immerse themselves.
The centre is an ideal family destination
on weekends with regular interactive

We do know it is also Christmas and New Year’s. But that we always
write about.
Let us look at something else this year:
National Tango Day
Tango is of course from Argentina.
Among many famous tango composers is one outstanding person:
Julio de Caro. Not only did he compose several classic pieces, but he
formed parts of the genre.
Argentina honoured him by naming 11 December (his birthday) as
‘National Tango Day’ in his honour.
… and tango is such a classic genre and dance that it is impossible to
get away from – and who does not like to view or dance tango?
And let
us not
forget
the most
famous
tango of
them all:
Forty-seven Ronin day (from Wiki)
Here is something else: I have to admit it, I love a good Karate and
Ninja movie.
It is an historical event in Japan. The 47 samurai became leaderless
after their master was told to commit suicide (Seppuku). Their master
had assaulted an official and that was a complete no-no; hence …
So, the 47 samurai planned the murder of the official
as their revenge. The planning period was one year.
But the story does not end there. The consequence of
killing the official was that they themselves would have
to commit suicide. Which they then did.
The significance of the story is the display of sacrifice,
loyalty towards the master, discipline, persistence and
honour. These were the qualities that the Japanese
culture revered and promoted. It did also impact on
the honour-code during the subsequent wars.
It is a bit more complex as one school claimed that they should not
have waited a whole year. Sure, proper planning would guarantee success,
but that was not important. Honouring the master should compel
them to attack immediately. That would have caused them to fail (most
likely) and all to die in battle.
That would be the honourable thing to do.
Others claiming that success was the yard-stick, wherefore planning was
OK. They would die anyway, so the difference would be the same.
… and that is still discussed to this day!
Namibia is surely a different part of the world. It offers a unique set of
experiences. Beware however: there are costs to some of these things
as well.
https://www.discoverafrica.com/safaris/namibia/an-active-holiday-in-namibia/
We have found a few things from the above:
If you’re after an active holiday in Namibia, you’re in for a mind-boggling
array of choices: everything from hiking, mountain biking and
sand boarding to river canoeing, ocean kayaking, mountain climbing,
animal tracking and quad biking.
Trekking:
There are hiking trails all over the country
but the most famous is the 85-kilometre,
five-day hike in the Fish River Canyon, a
route which is only open between May and
September.
You’ll need to be self-sufficient for the hike,
carrying your own sleeping gear and food
and the terrain is tough going, so it’s not
for the faint hearted.
A fantastic wildlife hike is the four-day Waterberg Hike in Waterberg
Pleateau Park (which is open from April to November) where you can
spot rare roan and sable antelope, as well as giraffe, kudu and hyena
amongst the dramatic red sandstone cliffs of the park.
For an easier hiking option, there’s the Tok Tokkie Trail, three-day
slackpacking trail in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, where the walking
is easy and your luggage is transported for you to comfortable
outdoor camps that are set up for you at the end of your walking day
(complete with cold drinks, gourmet food and hot water for washing).
Canoeing:
Canoeing on the Orange River for a few
days in southern Namibia is a perfect
choice for a relaxing active holiday for the
whole family. Several outfitters offer similar
multi-day paddling trips which include
guides and meals, meaning all you need
to do is paddle, swim, and sleep under the
stars.
And self-drive:
https://explore-namibia.com/
Explore Namibia offers organised
self-drive holidays.
You can go on an adventure
in a fully equipped vehicle
of your own choice. We will
arrange your accommodations in advance, whether you wish to stay
in lodges and guesthouses, on campsites or both.

So we think that it is only now we see climate change and natural
disasters getting more frequent? Well, we have had a few in the past,
and we need not go to the dying out of the dinosaur to see that.
How about the ‘year without a summer’? (Inspired by Wiki)
The year is 1816. Europe is settled again. The Napoleonic Wars are
over. Time to get back in and prosper.
Nature throws a curved ball. Indonesia, which Europe would hardly
know of, has a volcanic eruption of severe magnitude. Mount Tambora
erupts in 1815. Not only was it immensely violent, but it continued
to spew ashes for months on end.
It decreased the average temperature with less than one degree as
the ash in the atmosphere blocked sunlight.
Sounds boring? In areas where agriculture was problematic to begin
with, frost lingered for longer (until June) and killed off most crops in
Northern USA.
Europe experienced lower temperatures
and heavy rains. This caused a Europe-wide
famine as crops in the likes of
potatoes, wheat, barley etc failed.
It is estimated that Europe faced some
200,000 deaths due to famine and diseases.
The ash in the atmosphere created some strange phenomena: The sky
had a yellow tinge which probably inspired Turner in his paintings.
People migrated to better areas of USA and Europe, a pattern not seen
since the early Roman empire.
… and that was only one volcanic explosion.
And Africa?
Ever heard of AHP? Me neither – but it is the African Humid Period, in
the earliest days of the Holocene (where temperatures turned Snowball
Earth into a place where we could live). This is some 11,000 years ago,
which is really recent – geological speaking.
Now we need to be very scientific:
The Earth sort of wobbles a bit in its orbit around the sun. It is a cycle of
some 20,000 years. This change in wobble forces the monsoonal rains in
Northern Africa further north and intensifies
the rain fall.
Now we had lakes in Sahara and a fertile climate.
Sahara and surroundings were GREEN.
This triggered a population growth and also triggered the rock arts,
paintings and a settled life in terms of agriculture and livestock.
Remember, Jericho was a city 10,000 years ago. And Egypt was a growing
kingdom.
Alas, the desiccation de-populated Northern Africa into what we see
today.
But look at one little thing: a slight change
in climate triggers enormous changes in the
cultural make-up.
The ocean farm
We can plant on land, on gravel (soilless farming),
your hydroponics and aquaponics, but the ocean;
That is just extraordinary. So what is it all about?
With the water crisis looming we need to conserve
potable water. But an ocean garden does not need
to be watered after all, so there are attractive aspects
to this.
We are also running out of arable land, so it all leads
to one thought: we need a different approach to
food security.
I am using kelp as an example of all the ocean garden
options, and there are many plants we can
utilise (surprise!)
Underwater farming or the ocean garden is not
new. However, it has been focused on growing
high-value, niche crop. For instance, edible Kelp is
a breath-taking organism. It may be considered to
just be algae, but it gives ocean life a unique identity,
and has become an icon of marine conservation.
The oldest kelp recipe known is for the Japanese
“kombu”, which is made from Japanese local kelp
species, most similar to South Africa’s split-fan kelp.
The demand of the ‘algae’ Kelp amongst consumers
is not going to be a challenge. According to
nutritionists, kelp is often considered a ‘superfood’
due to its significant mineral content of
iodine (important for optimal thyroid function
and metabolism).
Kelps, in terms of ocean gardening, is a crop
that requires planting and harvesting, just like
any other plant, but with very little work in
between. Moreover, it needs no fertilizing, no
weed control, no watering, and it has very few
‘enemies’ in the form of pests or disease.
However, ‘planting’ is quite an unmerited term
for the production of kelps.
Kelps can disappear and reappear based on
the oceanographic conditions and the population
sizes of their primary herbivores.
Did you know?
Kelps are large brown algae seaweeds that
grows in “underwater forests” (kelp forests)
in shallow oceans, The organisms require
nutrient-rich water with temperatures between
6 and 14 °C They are known for their
high growth rate and can grow as fast as
half a metre a day, ultimately reaching 30 to
80 metres
Warmer than normal summers and seasonal
changes to currents that bring fewer nutrients
to kelp forests (both sometimes occurring naturally)
combine to weaken kelps and threaten
their survival.

On the other hand, concerns about the

rely on fish not just as food for the family
but as a source of income (selling the
catch). One way to mitigate the concern
is if the ocean garden respects local customs
and is mindful of the condition of
the ocean.
One thing is clear; we can grow plants
underwater. We can get away from the
water crisis and find a new way of ensuring
food security.

Did you like the article on Greta last month?
Amazingly, she is not alone.
I read an article in City Press 3 November2019,
composed by Dion Chang (*) (pg 5, Voices section).
Chang is mentioning a few other young activists,
all who have had a huge impact worldwide.
What Chang is mentioning is something very remarkable.
His explanation is rather simple: These
activists are not just parroting their parents. They
know what they are doing and they have a genuine
concern and commitment to a cause.
It has been made possible because of one simple
thing: Everybody has a smart-phone (also the
7-year old’s we presume) and all are connected.
This is a significant change in information consumption.
It means that even very young children
absorb news about a range of topics and make up
their own mind based on the input received. And
then they act!
Let us look at an example I got to know about
from Chang’s article: 2018: Two sisters (Ella and
Caitlin McEwan) aged seven and nine wrote to
McDonald’s about the plastic toys handed out with
the kiddie’s meals. They were ignored. Then they
started a campaign on change.org and suddenly
McDonald’s (and later Burger King) got the mes-
sage. Toys changed! And big business found
out that youth cannot be ignored.
Of course this one is a bit extreme, but look
at the context: The sisters (seven and nine!)
knew about plastic as a pollutant, they made
the connection between plastic pollution and
MacDonald’s toys and they felt compelled to
write a letter.
How could they know so much about plastic
pollution? Obviously from the internet, the
school and usage of smart-phones. (Ok, this
is a guess).
The remarkable thing here is that they have
the ability to connect various facts into a cohesive
message and then find the channels to
propagate the message.
This is the mini-revolution we now need to
adjust to.
We might now say that this is not something
for a high-school student to get into. After all,
high-school students are still very much ‘Greta’s’.
Not so fast! In a few years our students
will sit in the board rooms and the management
meetings. What will you do? You are
now the establishment.
Chang’s message is clear: Listen now or hurt
later

Greta is not alone!
I have gleaned these examples from Dion Chang’s (*) article in City
Press (3 November 2019. Pg 5 in the Voice section). Additional text
is from various websites
Ella and Caitlin McEwan:
“Sisters Ella and Caitlin McEwan are petitioning @McDonalds and @
BurgerKing to stop including plastic toys in their kids’ meals.
“We like to go to eat at Burger King and McDonald’s, but children
only play with the plastic toys they give us for a few minutes before
they get thrown away and harm animals and pollute the sea,”
they wrote on the petition. “We want anything they give to us to be
sustainable so we can protect the planet for us and for future generations.”
(change.org’s facebook page).
Where did they get the info from: ““We’ve been learning all about
the environment at school and the problem of plastic,” the sisters
wrote online.”
Does it sound too ‘grown-up’? could be that mom and dad helped
with the grammar? but that should not mean we discard their concern.
What came out of it (gleaned from businessinsider)
• Fer Machado, Burger King’s global chief marketing officer, announced
the news on Wednesday. Burger King says it will save
320 tonnes of plastic a year
• The burger chain has also launched “Meltdown” - a scheme
where UK customers buying an adult meal can get a kids’ meal
for free if they drop off an old toy to be recycled.
• Katie Evans, marketing director at Burger King UK, said in a
statement: “It is impossible to ignore the growing problem
excessive plastic waste is causing and we are glad to be taking
action.”
Vivian Lord: Army
toy set from BMC
Vivian is six years old. The family was
on holiday and Vivian won tickets in
the arcade. Those were used to get a
set of toy army soldiers figurines. Lo
and behold, Vivian had a great time
(apparently) but noticed something
odd: Those were all male figures.
She wanted the family to google
it (so she knows google!) and they
found no female soldier figurines.
So, a letter was composed to several
toy makers. BMC responded. Apparently,
they had been ‘toying’ with the
idea of female soldiers but not sure
how the market would react.
… and there is Vivian’s letter. Confirming
exactly their thoughts. The
figurines will be available in 2020 for
Christmas
We could perhaps find other stories,
but it confirms Chang’s findings: Kids
have access and they can think and
act!

You are love, you are loved
You are caring, kind and giving, you’re a gift
You are talented, smart and gentle
You are peace
You brighten up the room when u smile
And bring light to the darkest moments
You are wealth
You are rich at heart and u give more than u reke
Sometimes u give to a point were u have nothing left
but u still do. There are not too many like u
You are Victorious
Cause no matter how many losses u suffer
U still come out tops on the finish line
You are my inspiration
I look up to you and you never look down on me
I want to take this time to say thank you I love you
If no one ever tells you please
Start from the beginning and read this poem again
This time read it out loud
I wanna hear it too
But before you do
I need you to do me a favour
Replace all the “You are” with “I am..”
Love letter to You (Self)
