REGIONAL – When you give
your darling a Valentine’s Day
card this week, say thank you to
Esther Howland, a Worcester
businesswoman, who popularized
the romantic cards in America.
Howland, who lived from
1828 to 1904, did not invent the
Valentine’s Day card, but helped
popularize the often hand-made
cards in the U.S by creating a
system for mass producing the
cards using an assembly line
process that pre-dates Henry Ford
by a half century.
Tap Rooms Expanding for More Craft Beer Lovers
Continued from page 1
League baseball stadiums,
craft beer has taken over
taps across the country. In
recent years, craft beer sales
have grown 15 percent per
year with export sales rising
rapidly as well.
The craft beer sector with
more than 2,300 breweries
makes up about 10 percent
of the nation’s total beer
sales.
“It’s never been a better
time to be a beer drinker
than right now,” said Brewers
Association Director Paul
Gatza.
Here on the North Shore,
Riverwalk Brewing expanded
two years ago into an old
warehouse at 40 Parker Rd.
That allowed it to increase
in size and production by
10-fold from its previous
location on Graf Road in
the industrial park. Where
it was maxed out at 2,000
barrels per year in the old
location, its new facility can
produce 15,000 barrels a
year.
Valentine cards through the
mail.
In 1847, when Howland was
19, she received an English
Valentine, which inspired the
young artist and daughter of
a stationery business owner to
design her own. She imported
paper lace from England and
began creating cards in a
third-floor bedroom of her
family home.
Her brother, a salesman for
the stationery business, took
a dozen samples with him on
a trip to show his customers.
Expecting to sell only a few
cards, his sister was shocked
when he returned with orders
for more than $5,000 in
cards.
Valentine’s Day cards grew
in popularity after the Civil
War because some speculate
that the turmoil of the war
was so great that people
craved the sentimentality of
the cards.
As her business grew,
Howland recruited friends
who were looking for work.
At the time, Worcester was
a hotbed of the women’s
suffrage movement. In 1850,
it would host the first national
convention advocating voting
in the CI Works facility a
year ago, was expecting to
sell at least 75 percent of its
beers to retail stores, bars
and restaurant. Located
on a side street, BareWolf
did not expect a huge tap
room clientele. But during
Thursday through Sunday
evenings, the taproom,
which its owners call “funky,”
attracts a crowd to try the
latest beer, shoot pool and
play games.
Paul Bareford, part of the
father-son team that started
BareWolf, said more than
50 percent of the brewery’s
revenues come from the tap
room. “It sure surprised us,”
he said.
He attributes the early
success to the quality of the
beer. “I don’t think anybody
makes a better beer than us,”
the senior Bareford said.
RateBeer agrees. In its
annual ranking of beers by
state, the website rated Sam
Adams Utopias as the best
beer, Trillium Breweries
as the best brewer and
BareWolf as the best new
beer in the state.
Mother of the American Valentine
rights for women.
Howland devised a
production system for the
women that created the cards
she designed using an assembly
line technique. It seems to
have worked much better
with 19th century women
than modern children.
According to one story
Towler, who oversees youth
programs at the library, will
tell in her presentation, she
tried to get a class of eightyear-olds
at the library to
make cards on an assembly
line basis. But she found that
the children did not like the
assembly line, preferring to
draw and make individual
cards.
As her Valentine’s Day cards
grew more famous around
the country, Howland was
often referred to as “The
Mother of the American
Valentine.” But don’t blame
her for the ubiquitous red
color on cards and candy.
Most of Howland’s designs
were not red, but were
of many different colors
and included drawings of
cherubs, Bavarian musicians,
windmills, deer and other
forest animals. Her designs
used lace over colorful and
In early March, the
city planning board will
hold a public hearing on
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) With both your creative
side and your energy levels rising this week, you should be able to tackle that too-long-neglected
project again. A family member might have important news.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An explanation you requested seems to be more confusing
than enlightening. You should insist on clarifications now, rather than deal with problems that
might arise later.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your energy levels might be ebbing a bit. But that’s no excuse for
taking catnaps when you could be working on those unfinished tasks. There’ll be time to curl
up and relax by week’s end.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to get those ideas out of your head and
into a readable format if you hope to have them turned into something doable. A good friend
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Careful -- you might be stepping into dangerous
territory if you decide to “exaggerate” the facts too much. Remember: The truth speaks for
itself and needs no embellishment.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Although your workplace successes have earned
you many admirers, there are some colleagues who are not among them. Be careful how you
proceed with your new project.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might have to go into great detail to
explain why you’re currently reluctant to make changes to an already prepared plan. Be sure
you have all the facts to back yourself up.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Travel plans might still be uncertain. But
instead of getting upset about the delay, open yourself up to other possibilities, and begin
checking out some alternative destinations.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Changing conditions might require you to alter
some of your plans. While you might be agreeable to this, be prepared with explanations for
those who do not want changes made.
Health & Wellness
BY J. PETER ST. CLAIR, DMD
There are many people who
suffer with pain involving some
area of the head. Toothaches can
cause pain, but these are mostly
avoidable with proper diet, home
care and regular visits to your
dentist. Teeth can also play an
indirect role in facial/head pain.
Orofacial pain includes a number
of clinical problems involving the
chewing (masticatory) muscles
and/or temporomandibular joints
(TMJs). Problems can include
TMJ discomfort involving muscle
spasms in the head, neck, shoulders
and/or jaw, migraines or other
types of tension headaches, pain
with the teeth, face or jaw; and can
even play a role in anxiety and/or
depression.
You swallow approximately
2,000 times per day, which causes
the upper and lower teeth to come
together and push against the skull.
People who have an unstable bite,
missing teeth, or poorly aligned
teeth can have trouble because
the muscles work harder to bring
the teeth together, causing strain.
People with seemingly good teeth/
bite are also susceptible. Pain can
also be caused by clenching or
grinding teeth, trauma to the head
and neck, or poor ergonomics.
Temporomandibular disorders
Want to boost your mental acuity?
Get moving and eat your vegetables.
Here’s yet another study that says
we can increase our mental sharpness
by walking or riding a stationary bike
three times a week for six months
and going on the DASH (Dietary
Approaches to Stop Hypertension)
diet. This Duke University study
has an interesting result, however:
It concluded that we can shave nine
years off our brain age.
The study looked at seniors who
had mild cognitive impairment
Brighter Smiles...
LIPS TOGETHER – TEETH APART
(TMD) affect more than 10
million Americans. Your TMJ’s are
located where the skull connects
your lower jaw to the muscles on
the sides of your head and face
controlling the joint’s movements.
Women between the ages of 20
and 40 are often more frequent
sufferers because of the added
estrogen in their bodies.
One in eight Americans suffers
from headaches. Experts estimate
that 80 percent of all headaches
are caused by muscle tension,
which may be related to the bite.
Clenching the jaw muscles creates
tension in the muscles that close
the jaw, the main one of which
is the temporalis muscle. Signs
that may indicate a headache
from dental origin include: pain
behind the eyes, sore jaw muscles
or “tired” muscles upon awaking,
teeth grinding, clicking or popping
of the jaw joints, head and/or scalp
is painful to the touch, earaches
or ringing, neck and/or shoulder
pain, and dizziness. Keep in mind
that in a 24-hour period of time,
your teeth should only touch 10
minutes total. If you clench or
grind your teeth, your teeth are
touching much more than that and
I can promise you that something
in the masticatory system is being
affected.
Sleep disorders can also play a
role. I am not just talking about
sleep apnea. There are a wide range
of sleep disorders and some of them
will cause people to clench and/
or grind as a defense mechanism
of the body to achieve proper air
Senior Scene
Take 9 Years Off Your Brain Age
and assigned them one of four
combinations of activities: the
walking/bike exercise, a DASH diet
or both. A fourth choice was health
education alone. The first three
months were spent doing exercise
under the supervision of the research
facility. Later the participants were
released to exercise on their own.
Specifically, the seniors were asked
to ride a stationary bike or walk for 35
minutes three times a week following
a 10-minute warm up. The DASH
diet, for those who were assigned,
promotes healthy grains, low sodium,
reduced dairy and meat -- the standard
healthy diet for those with high
blood pressure. (See MayoClinic.org
for more information.) There was no
push to intensify the rate of exercise
Dentists have a variety of ways
to help relieve orofacial symptoms.
One way to treat these problems
is called an orthotic, or splint,
that is worn over the teeth to help
stabilize the bite; kind of like an
orthotic some wear in their shoes
for alignment and balance when
standing. Permanent correction may
require equilibration (reshaping
teeth), prosthetic dentistry and/ or
orthodontics. Many use a splint on
a daily basis to avoid having these
other treatments done.
Orofacial pain can range
from tolerable to debilitating.
Maintaining or correcting your bite
ensures optimal health, and proper
care will help reduce or eliminate
orofacial pain or discomfort. If
your dentist can not help you, ask
for a referral.
Most important lesson of the
day: The optimal rest position of
the jaw (minus the 10 minutes
the teeth touch in 24 hours) is
lips together, teeth slightly apart,
the tip of the tongue resting just
behind your upper front teeth, and
you should be breathing through
your nose.
Dr. St. Clair maintains a private
dental practice in Rowley and
Newburyport dedicated to healthcentered
family dentistry. If there
are certain topics you would like to
see written about or questions you
have please email them to him at
percent maximum heart rate), but
the exercise intensified over time as
participants became more fit.
The results: Those with the best
improvements had been assigned the
walking/bike exercise as well as the
DASH diet. They benefited by being
more organized, achieving goals
and regulating behavior. Even those
who only exercised saw significant
improvement. Researchers believe
this was because of increased oxygen
to the brain.
If you want to go on the same
program, talk to your doctor and get
advice, especially about the intensity
rate of exercise. If you’re concerned
about your balance on a stationary
bike, ask about the benefits of a
rowing machine instead.
