The Kindness Connection to open
space inside Northbrook Court
With the hope of finding
meaningful, age-appropriate
volunteer projects for
local children, Wilmette
residents Mary Roth and
Lisa Axelrod, along with
a founding board, started
The Kindness Connection
in 2006.
Now more than a decade
after its beginning, The
Kindness Connection is
taking another step toward
its mission of educating
and inspiring children on
the importance of volunteerism.
The Wilmette-based
nonprofit recently announced
the opening of a
new dedicated space inside
Northbrook Court.
The storefront will open
Feb. 23 and will be located
on the mall’s second floor,
across from the newly
opened Northbrook Play
and next to Gymboree
clothing, according to a
press release sent out Jan.
23.
“Our mission is to inspire
youth to be lifelong
volunteers,” Roth said.
“Our new space will enable
us to achieve our vision
and build a sustainable
organization while
providing programming to
individuals, families, field
trip groups, scouts and
others. A key component
of our new venture is developing
revenue streams
to support outreach initiatives
in underserved communities,
thereby giving
more children the greatest
gift, the opportunity to
give.”
Individual drop-in projects,
as well as group and
schools projects will be
available at the Northbrook
Court workspace.
Team-building and birthday
party opportunities
will also be available.
According to the release,
project options will
range from making teddy
bears for children in hospitals,
to tissue boxes and
vases for seniors, and creating
chew toys for dogs in
animal shelters.
Shelters, hospitals, early-start
programs, senior
centers, veterans and animal
shelters will be recipients
of the handmade project
gifts.
Project prices start at
$12 and will support donations
of The Kindness
Connection Classroom
Kindness Kits to underserved
schools and groups.
Since its beginning, The
Kindness Connection has
reached more than 35,000
youth volunteers, delivering
thousands of handmade
projects to nonprofits
all over the world.
